All newer diesels have catalytic converter then dpf (diesel particulate filter). The dpf catches the ash that used to spew out of diesels. Then exhaust goes through another catalyst where the DEF is injected. DEF is 32%-35% synthetic urea (fertilizer/cow urine). In the beginning they filtered cow urine but now they synthesize it.

@@stephenbartram7377: Not sure if I would do that. Different density and qualities makes DEF-fluid behave different then water. Water freezes at 0 degrees C, but DEF fluid freezes around -10 degrees C.

I drive for fedex and if we run out of DEF its ruins the system because def fluid crystalizes and is basically useless if ever that low...ive heard you can be terminated for vehicle neglect if you let the truck run out especially since we have DEF pumps at the termimal and truck stops, you can pick up def bottles by the gallon at walmart to save you the trouble next time

School buses with diesel engines have been using DEF fluid for about 4 or 5 years now. I heard that the exhaust fumes coming out of the exhaust pipes are so clean you can literally breath it in with no ill effects whatsoever. Hopefully you were using your 4 way flashers (hazard lights) when you were doing only 50mph on the expressway (it's the law here) so the vehicles behind you have advance warning that your driving way slower then the speed limit. It’s worst on the 16’s and down because the pcm doesn’t read the def fluid level like a gas gauge it only sees a percent and once u run it out it’s a bitch to clear it there is a drive cycle that u have to do a certain way depending on if it’s a narrow gram or wide frame the new body style changed the def tank and sending unit and pump and the way it reads the level of fluid

@@650ib Luckily, the tank is pretty good size. I do approximately 150,000 miles a year. The DEF doser injectors last about a year. I've never run out of DEF, but that injector has gone bad mid trip. The truck de-rates almost right away. I carry an extra injector, just in case. And you want to see how much fun that is to change! 🙄

I think someone fibbed to you 650ib. Also i did not watch video but will put my 2 cents in based on title. I drive diesel trucks that require def. All def is is a liquid shot into the exhaust to help eliminate toxic fumes as a way to help emissions. Your motor should not be affected in any way what so ever. There are electrical perameters to prevent you from driving without it that will slow you down and not allow you to drive over 50mph and slow acceleration. People eliminate the def completly so im not sure what the issue really is.

@@650ib Yeah and also you need a special drivinglicens to tow a big rig like yours "wich i have" on you standard licens your allowed to tow a maximum of 3500kg total weight of car and trailer IF the car is allowed to and the trailer cant weigh more then the car. And with the special licens you can have a total weigh of 7tons but also only if the car is allowed to from the manufacturer ! =)

Yeah they delete it because they think it will make them cooler and that DEF damages the truck when it doesn’t. Its simply to cutdown emissions drastically or all together. I used to be misunderstood myself. Learning about it in full detail. Have a respect for DEF. they just need to improve these systems though. They do not last long in the desert or cold weather. The whole damage to the engine thing don’t quite get why they say that. it will damage the DEF system cause it pretty much burn the thing up without any fluid is what happens in reality. DEF doesn’t go in the engine period. Just keeps you from killing everyone around you because you want to be stupid and blow soot and toxins all in the air just to boost your ego.
