And by mental illness, its depression. There is a whole variety of mental illness people suffer from that have extremely poor understanding in the general populace - like OCD - but all the artsy games depict depression. Although I have to give a shout out to Celeste for touching on themes of anxiety and Night in the Woods for depicting disassociation.

You know Yahtzee, when you started the 12 games in 12 months project, i was worried that it meant you where getting bored of zp and that would mean less zp eventually. But, I'm now seeing that the project is actually making you a better critic, that bit about how pedro has sunken too much effort into the core gameplay loop and none into anything else was really insightful. Also congrats on getting married! (whenever that was.)

The bit with a sewer level reminds me of Casino Royale (the 1967 spy comedy). Two of the characters are fleeing from bad guys, and James Bond’s daughter pulls aside a manhole cover. She sticks her legs in, the music track changes to “Whats New Pussycat”... for about two stanzas. Then her bodyguard drags her away to a much more sensible escape route, namely his car. Why do some indie games insist on having voice over that's not trained? I was watching this one indie trailer, amazed by the quality, especially of the musical score, and I cringed when the voice actor started to speak. It's better to use text over an untrained voice actor. In fact, some let's play communities love games that have no voice acting.

It can occasionally work. The Cat Lady had mostly amateur voice actors except for Susan Frost doing Susan Ashworth the main character and pretty jank sound engineering (the entire game was made by one guy except for voice acting) but it kind of really works and actually adds to the atmosphere.

For people who are curious what durians are, I lived in Singapore for about seven or eight years and they were there. Supposedly they taste good but you have to get past the stench first. Yahtzee nails my 'problem' with Sea of Solitude. Its themes are rather heavy-handed and don't say anything that hasn't been said before and better. Though as it is quite quick to finish, I am not really bothered by it. If you get it for free (e.g. through Origin Access), give it a shot. It might draw you in.
