My Full Bike Commuting Route in JAPAN

Today my wife will try my old daily bike commuting route in Japan. Today's cycling course is 40km (26 miles) roundtrip, this video is our ride home, so the second half of the ride which I would do after work.
We are cycling along the river cycling paths in Nagoya, Japan, including the Shonai river and Yada river cycling paths.
Japan has many river paths which are great for cycling, but often there are many bridge underpasses and gravel roads, which make them ideal for a gravel bike or mountain bike. Today we are riding out mountain bikes so we can take some more rough lines with ease.

COVID-19 meant that my Japanese wife, our daughter and I were "refugees" in Nikko City for almost 4 months. We took 4 different B&Bs on different mountain slopes during that time. We couldn't bring our bikes with us, so we both purchased new "Momma-Chariots" for the shopping, but also for the ease of shopping. It was great! Living in the flats of Cambodia for the last, nearly 26 years we were initially forced to push our bikes up some of the steeper climbs, but within a relatively short time even this old man was taking those same inclines still seated. When we returned to Cambodia the first thing I noticed - confirmed by Strava -- is that my average speed for my usual early morning ride through Angkor Wat increased by 5kph! Love those hills!

Nice tour! A hint for future videos: lower the exposure a little bit. Most bright areas are completely burnt out, and shadows are too bright. Lower exposure would make things more atmospheric.

This is such a great route. I would want to ride this almost everyday just to get out and look at all the scenery, it varies so much. I think that after you become acclimated to Vietnam and are able to start your business you will be just fine.

I don't know how many videos of yours have I watched, but definitely plenty already 😂 I have a question, I have watched your video the pros and cons of each commuter bike, I didnt comment there because I still havent had my thoughts straight. So right now, the bike that I am using is a 26" MTB on Butterfly/Trekking bars(for multiple hand positioning), planning on changing stem and the angle of the bars, since I am in an upright position and its so hard to speed up because of drag especially when its windy, takes double the effort just to go to normal/average speed(makes me tired for the first few kilometers of the ride) and I have seen you so many times of course commuting with drop bars. And here's the thing, I plan on putting Drop bars on this MTB of mine to create more of an aero position, (i already have a setup in mind how to make that work with the cables and shifters to use, dont worry), and most people say control and maneuvering is difficult for Drop Bars, (Ive never tried drop bars yet), would you say Drop Bars are a better option to reduce the drag but rather sacrificing maneuverability - or would that just depends on the mastery with use? (and timing it with brakes for safety of course)

Thanks! It really comes down to preference. I honestly rarely use my drops (unless I get serious) and always ride on the hoods. Though my stem is always slammed down 😅

Because she has some seriously strong legs. I really like the route he took, which is much better than any commuting route in the Bay Area. Biking in the Bay is like a death sentence, especially with how many idiots we have controlling a 3ton shell of crushing death. At least in Hanoi, mostly everyone is on a scooter/moped and work with each other to survive on the road. lol

@Two Wheel Cruise It’s kind of weird: While it’s true that people can’t afford houses in Japan, there are areas where the housing has been literally “abandoned”. Another KZbinr, @Tokyo Llama , had purchased such a house and was refurbishing it, but I’ve haven’t checked up on his status during the pandemic.

The building materials might be because of the climate. Here in the US houses built in warmer climates just suck, if it doesn't snow where the houses are built they are built really weak and without a lot of insulation. I have gone to places like California, Florida, and Alabama and built some million dollar houses and the only difference with them and the bulk of houses in the area, besides the wood trim on the inside, is they actually use concrete foundations and insulation. It doesn't make sense to me, if they used more insulation they wouldn't need to run their AC as much. . .

These types of videos are therapeutic. So fun fact; due to heat specificity, wood has a much higher thermal inertia than materials like concrete or brick. So, in terms of insulation, its a better building material. Of course, this still doesn't do well for sound dampening. We are a bit spoiled in the US with our homes built out of less insulative material (traditionally, new homes of course are super insulative) and then costly climate control to make up for it. It was a bit of a joke; I did my MS in an environmental science department and yet the building was probably the least environmentally efficient on the campus.

Buying a house/apartment is often not as worthy and financially a good move as people think, especially if you have to take a loan, but even without a loan there is a lot of cost people don't consider. There is even the fact you are possible thinking of moving to the USA for several years and then maybe back to Vietnam or wherever. Another thing people don't account for properly, that especially nowadays moving around is more common than in the past and if you are person that likes doing it to begin with, there is even less point to buying property. I am just saying, consider it very, very hard and well before doing such a thing.

just wanted to buzz in regarding the bike path weed overgrowing. With the shortage of unskilled cheap labour (due to restrictive immigration policy) and aging population causing labour shortage on skilled market too, Japan has a chronic shortage of cheap labour! Which pushing local gov't to divert expensive local labour to necessary work like road maintenance and rubbish collection. maintaining the bike path goes the down list of priority and only done when it's fully overruned. Some Western European countries are also suffering from shortage of garbage collectors and other unskilled labour too as the local workforce refuse to take jobs like that due to lower pay or work environment. There are other hidden socio-economic and cultural issue too but this post is long as is, so in a nutshell "it's kind of a rich country problem"!
