Have a B&H made version and the Victorinox version. The B&H version has some sort of blade issue, I'll get around to fixing it eventually, I'm cautious as it's more difficult to replace these days. The Victorinox is a little rounded on the tip but after years of good usage it hasn't made any difference so I'm leaving it as it is. The Victorinox has gone into semi retirement now as I'd hate to loose it. They are great knives, pretty compact, good blade size and the awl is very useful. The scales are the most grippy and practical I've had on a Victorinox even better than the Ranger Grips.

As far as renovation goes. I would regrind both the blade and the awl back to useable. Of course keep a cup of ice water to help preserve the temper of the tools and try to remove material from the backside of both tools as much as possible. Definitely video the process

Oh yeah I’m in the midst of this. Thanks for the heads up. No ice water and no heat changes for this old blade. It’s hand tools all the way.

As you know the GAK was produced by several companies. For me i do have one made by someone other than victorinox but i also have a victorinox one and a very desirable varient the Mauser which was also victorinox. But i think they are all prized by collectors

I only recently found out about GAKs. I’m quite a Newbie to collecting although I used a huntsman since I was in my teens.

It is pretty sad that Victorinox will just stop producing some models. There's probably more retired models than the ones available.

You’re absolutely correct, much like the Google Graveyard and Microsoft Morgue, innovation calls for fast killing of products that don’t meet the needs and wants of customers. So more products killed than actual in production. Thanks for sharing that thought. It’s gotten me thinking.

I think you should still keep it an awl and not a chisel. To maintain originality at least.

It’s about time I embark on fixing the awl tip. Thanks for the “tip” 😎

Lol here I was going for “eerie”. Oh well, I’ll do better next time. Creepy is the old GAK with the broken awl/reamer tip. I don’t know where it’s been and who it belonged to.

Thanks for your reply, and the video. I have an I.C.A.R variant that gets occasional use.
