Even with my hatred of Snape as a person, you got to give him props for when he first saw Lupin as the werewolf. Fans of the books will know Snape's biggest fear is werewolves due to Sirius' "prank" in their 6th year. And yet, in this moment, Snape grabs the kids and puts himself between them and Lupin in an instant.
@VegetaLF7

Exactly, this is one of Snape's very few redeeming moments in the series. For the briefest of moments he puts himself in harm's way to protect not only a bunch of Gryffindors but the Trio themselves, his most hated students, facing his own fear in the process. For just this instant he was actually doing the right thing for them.

To answer jens question about him always feeding him chocolate, dementors suck out and feed on happy memories leaving you and empty shell full of you worst thoughts and memories. Chocolate has been proven to release small amounts of chemicals that release endorphins in your brain that make you happy. It’s a quick remedy to immediately stave of the depression the dementors put you in basically.

Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, and David Thewlis, then later Timothy Spall are just ACTING the hell out of that scene. Many are right to say that you can believe that all of them have known each other for years by this scene alone. "EXPECTO PATRONUUUUUUUUUUM!" Chills. LITERAL chills. EVERY time. The best moment in the ENTIRE series ESPECIALLY in the films since in the films Harry is RARELY for some god damn reason seen doing REALLY powerful magic on his own. In the books, he's stressed, but A COMPETENT WIZARD. The movies just show him stressed. SO seeing him take on a HUNDRED dementors is just...AHHH love it. They gave way WAY too many Harry book moments and Ron book moments to Hermione and it sacrificed their characters in the process. That's not good female writing that's just...bad writing. A lot of people who love movie Hermione would read the first few books and go "Why isn't she as cool as movie Hermione?" She gets better as the books go on but she does NOT start out like movie Hermione does. Grinds my gears as an adult.

well now hold on while the movies did some things REALLY bad (like ruining Ron and nearly ruining Harry you know....THE MAIN CHARACTER) they did do some things better. Like Severus. In the books, you REEEALLLY don't know if you're supposed to like this man or not, even after his death and the memories revealed from that death. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs Marauder's Map was designed by Moony (Remus Lupin- Werewolf), Wormtail (Peter Pettigrew- Rat), Padfoot (Sirius Black- Dog) and Prongs(James Potter - Stag). So there is an origin story of sorts to the Dementors: When J.K. Rowling was writing the first Harry Potter book; she finally finished it and wanted to surprise her Mom with it but sadly her Mom passed away before she got that chance. The resulting period of depression that followed gave rise to the creation of the Dementors. A creature that is the literal embodiment of depression. Makes sense when depression has been described as not just overwhelming sadness but also the absence of feeling altogether. This just goes to show that everything in Harry Potter no matter how small; has a meaning behind it. Another note: this film did quite well on story and juiciness while the main villain Voldemort didn’t even show up once.

One of the more interesting aspects of this movie is how director Alfonso Cuaron changed his approach to it. He admitted in an interview that when he was tasked with doing the movie, he didn't take it very seriously at first. He hadn't read the books or seen the other films. He was joking around about it with his friend/fellow famous director Guillermo del Toro, who immediately called him an arrogant bastard and told him to go read the books. Cuaron read the books and realized he needed to take it much more seriously, turning what could've been an above average kid's movie into arguably the best film in the series.

It took me about my 4th or 5th watch of this film (this was many years ago, of course) to realise that: 1. Buckbeak never really died initially, but the audience was always meant to believe he was (kind of the point of the scene), and 2. Dumbledore intentionally distracted the minister when they walked out of Hagrid's home by having him face the other direction so Harry and Hermione can take Buckbeak (I used to think "Wow, how convenient they looked the other way"). This book/film is one of my favourites in the series just for how they utilised time travel and deception.

Yep! Time travel in the Harry Potter universe doesn’t actually change the timeline at all (ignore the Cursed Child 🤢)…the first time through the timeline we see the stone Hermione threw, Hermione nearly sees herself, and Harry saves himself and Sirius from the dementors. Going back in time only allows them to do that which has “already” been done. I always loved this function of the time turner, because otherwise time travel introduced into a story breaks the narrative completely. This way death and consequence for actions still hold weight.

@@44r0n-9 Dumbledore has planned in advance to save Buckbeak. That's why he was biding his time talking to Fudge and the executioner for so long, because he planned to give future Harry and his team instructions to take Buckbeak away at that moment. He didn't predict that Sirius is going to be captured however, that's entirely an improvisation (that's why he ordered to keep him unguarded in the book). By his original plan Pettigrew would be presented to Fudge as an evidence that Black was innocent, and that would be the end of story. Lupin was supposed to be chilling in his office, having drunk the Wolfbane potion, and Snape would keep his nose away from the events as well. Ultimately, the Marauders Map ended up changing the entirely finale of the book as it prompted Lupin and Snape to intervene with Harry and Sirius's would-be lone reunion. Dumbledore must've been in shock when he learned about the map. And we know for a fact that he spied on them during this whole scene in the Shrieking Shack, because he says in the fifth book "I watched from afar ... as you found Sirius, learned what he was and rescued him".

It gets darker, it gives a lot of character development to the characters (especially Harry), it starts showing Harry’s darker side, and it introduces some important characters and plot lines. I love the jokes, too, they all land so well. And it’s also a really well made film, some great storytelling techniques are used here, and visually it’s beautiful. @@Mr.Spanglish_94 The Philosopher's Stone is the true name of the book/movie. For some reason it was changed to Sorcerer's Stone for American audiences because it thought American children wouldn't want to read a book with "philosopher" in the title. The reason why it was called PHILOSOHPER stone is due to it being traced to Greek Philosophy (hence the name), when they debated the existence of such a thing. The Philosopher’s Stone was the most sought-for creation in middle-age alchemy. It was supposed to be a stone that could turn base metals into gold and silver, as well as produce an elixir that grants eternal life.

SPOILERS MENTIONED IN THIS COMMENT!! I think thats because the movies dont show him being awful to Neville. The don't even really show how unfair he was to Harry and Hermione. Worst part for me was that they didn't include the scene where he called Lily a mudblood because it makes the non-book reading audience wonder why she didnt end up with Snape, completely erasing his prejudice and his support of a hate group. Its easier to see him a grey character if you just remember his worst moments from the books but don't see them, so non-book movie watchers see him not as grey but as a hero which is just awful. Don't even get me started on Dumbledore. Both of them are intresting characters for sure and their actions do help save the day but it doesn't redeem them for book readers who have more knowledge about the world than casual movie watchers
