The segment on flesh tones made me so mad I had to pause and walk away from my computer for a bit and I extend my deepest , most sincere gratitude to you for it. Since I started dabbling in this hobby I have hated just about every flesh tone I have come across, usually because to me they were far too pink. When you pulled out the light muted green I had my light bulb moment and subsequent frustration at myself for not having realized this sooner because it is pretty much the same color green you find in a color correction wheel for makeup. This is a bit of color theory I have been playing with for over 20 years thanks to my time doing theater throughout high school and all the way through a bachelors. Why I hadn't translated the principle from makeup to paint is beyond me. I also loved the bit about adding depth to flesh, once again a concept I know from stage makeup because it is how you make prosthetics look natural.

As someone who doesn’t have 1200 paints, I’ve started to really appreciate the Army Painter Fanatic range because of how easy it is to buy one and be confident what color it will be or better yet, buy 2-3 and be confident they’ll make a great transition. The names and bottle colors accurately represent the real color and they’re organised into really logical groups. Say you wanted 3 blue-greens ranging from dark to light, it’s so easy to go to that range and pick 3, deciding how harsh a transition you want between each. All that said, for speciality paints like gold and fluo, I’ve gone Pro Acrl. They seem to be the best of the best!

I live in germany and Pro Acryl is pricey here. Army Painter is easily available, but I dont like their saturation. To me AK3rd is really great (I love that pastel set and the Jose Davinci signature set), but I use Vallejo New Game/Model Color the most. Its just the best bang for your buck where I live, plus I find their Xpress Colors to be more versatile than other companies inky paints. It is really great that we have so many options today. I am also quite interested in the new P3 paints, because I like satin finishes usually more than matte ones

Love to see Tenebrous Grey getting some attention. I always seem to find somewhere to use it on everything I paint and as the purple in it is very subtle and desaturated it's the sort of paint that I'm glad to have on hand as I doubt it would be trivial to mix it myself.

15:33 this Burnt Red probably covers well, because it contains a lot of red oxide pigment, which is pretty opaque especially compared to any other red pigment. Mix in another red pigment with good staining qualities and you got yourself a burnt red/hull red or whatever the hobby brand decides to call it.
@thinkabouthelogic3 ай бұрын
They also have a Red Oxide, so I am wondering now about the difference... I will have to go fiddle tomorrow...
@Wijkert3 ай бұрын
@@thinkabouthelogic Jason from Pro Acryl ones told me that they try to use the least amount of pigments per paints, so it's likey that the Red Oxide from Pro Acryl only contains PR101, which would make it ideal for mixing. I wouldn't ever buy a full 'paint set' from any company, especially as a beginner, that said I did con my wife into getting me the Pro Acryl base set for Xmas a couple years ago. If money is no object go for it, but I bet you will only use half of them. I really love the Pro Acryl range, the bottle design is just wrong but the paints are generally amazing. Vallejo Mecha Colour metallics are amazing, along with their metallic black Air paint, super thin airbrush paints but go on amazing with a brush.

I wouldn't get a paint set, just get the colours you need, there will be colours in a set you never even open. Depending on what you are painting, it's unlikely there would be an ideal set unless you really go overkill and spend too much as a beginner.

Ideally every paint should be in the green category for me. Instead of buying a complete set I think I will need to buy from different sets and replace a lot of the colours. When I stopped painting I was having a lot of frustration with the quality of the paint and I want to be able to paint without frustration so Im tackling this problem on the head. Im not convinced buying whole sets work. It great if you have the money and space for sure.

After watching this video I almost feel like I've been paint "incorrectly" all these years. The concept of universal highlights and shadows makes a huge amount of sense and I feel almost foolish for not considering it previously. I coincidentally purchased many of the Pro-Acryl paints you have recommended when buying some bottles to experiment with. I mainly use Citadel with some heavy investment in Scale 75. I enjoy the variety of colours available but I do find the consistency and the coverage can be a challenge at times or inconsistent depending on the bottle. It's a bit of a shame to see many painters that lauded the range to have moved away from it now but I think that I'll be using it for some time to come. I don't like to just discard paints unless I am really frustrated with it.

I just bought a starter set of paint, some brushes and then more brushes and more paint online and more miniatures, rust-oleum flat primer in gray, black and white and...and...washes and....I've...JUST PUT MY FIRST BLACK PRIMER ON MY FIRST MINI!!!! :) Thank GOD I saw your beginner tutorial as now I'm really going to just take my time and not waste any of the valuable resources, I just spent probably over $350 in total (LOTS of minis :) I'm terrified to start but at least I have my first mini primed and it looks like it sprayed on even, etc. From your tutorial I feel like that shading and lighting is where it gets tricky....maybe I'll paint a little tomorrow but probably will watch more of your videos first. There are so many tutorials that you can get lost and just unfocused so I'm going to stick to your channel like paint to primer...my first miniature painting joke? I've already tried out your gold recipe and it's simply breathtaking - thanks for sharing! My question is how do you shade it? Do you use a wash and then highlight again with the pure gold to bring back the shine? 🤔Any advice would be highly appreciated.

I basically only use AK 3rd gen and the new formulation Vallejo paints. Then some random ones off citadel colors, like thunderhawk blue, or now the ap fanatic stuff
