Yeah I see it as kind of a "fine see if I care you're going to die but fine walk away we're done!" To me much of Athena's part in this song feels like she's lashing out because she thinks Odysseus is going to die and in her mind if he'd just listened to her he wouldn't be in this situation
@JadeLwoj9 ай бұрын
I think this is the first animatic I’ve seen where I feel so many different undertones compared to the lyrics. How there’s EVEN MORE DEPTH added. Odysseus screaming how she’s alone sounds like him screaming his pain about how alone HE feels. How alone SHE’S made him by raising him above the rest and how her abandoning him when he’s already in so much pain has made him SNAP. His shed tears fallen on her face both like a moment of epiphany for her but also like he’s cried the tears FOR HER. Like those are the tears she can’t shed. Also the apple is damn smart. Because for all that Athena scolds and raves at Odysseus’ weak human emotions…her involvement and participation in the Trojan War, her absolutely vital partnership with Odysseus to end the war, came about because of her hurt pride at losing the Golden Apple. For her, THIS IS ALL HURT PRIDE. Because the war is over and Odysseus for real fucked up, but her focus is how badly this reflects on her. That the great Warrior of the Mind, a Hero of Troy that proved her own capabilities had now FAILED. That at the beginning was a TEMPER TANTRUM. BUT. (And oh wow, I loved that the previous animatics built up to this.) Odysseus really did LEARN from her and she underestimated just how much. Because as a warrior trained by her, he can actually anticipate her moves and know how to incapacitate her without truly hurting her. As her student, he’s gotten to the point where he can ACTUALLY MANIPULATE the Quick-Thought Dimension ITSELF! He’s proven, in some ways, her EQUAL. And that raises the stakes and tension in this song while also making it even more harrowing. Because the power balance is now startlingly more equal than before. They’re BRAWLING. He PINNED her. He could HURT A GODDESS. And so he and Athena fight and rage against each other until they crash and…Odysseus is on top but he’s the one that’s broken. And Athena is snapped out of her own temper to realize that her pride has maybe lost her that bright, vivacious, caring little shit she’s so fond of. She’s done her own part in killing that boy and making the monster. And the most tragic thing is that they both know they’re wrong on some level. They both know they’ve crossed a line. But Odysseus is too lost in his grief and resentment and Athena is still too proud. So they’ve lost each other as a result. EDIT: It’s just…so damn personal.

While it's impossible to tell what the creator's intention is because the official visual animation/production hasn't come out yet- it literally gave me goosebumps to think of it this way. In my head it was always Athena walking away but this animatic gave it a twist that's very interesting to think about because Athena (at least in this musical especially) is VERY about controlling Odysseus, and the idea that Odysseus is abandoning her but she's trying to frame it as her walking away adds another layer of her obsession with control that I think would genuinely benefit the character in an official production.

Honestly, I love that Athena and Odysseus' argument seems more personal in this video. They're both at fault. As much as Athena is seen as a God, her outburst, and her screaming back at Odysseus trying to get the last word in made her seem so much like a human. At the beginning of the video, Athena kind of starts the whole squabble and tries to end it by flying away, and I like how Odysseus got his word in. Kind of telling her "You can't just yell at me and leave, you said your peace now I get to say" mine sort of thing.

Someone made a comment on this point, but I really wanted to add my two cents to it. Of the different versions I've seen of this, so far they've had Athena depicted as unwavering for the most part. Especially at the last part, I see others showing how she's repeating, "This is my goodbye" as though it's more her emphasizing how badly he's messed up before she goes. In this one, it's very much like she's trying to get him to turn around and apologize, fall on his knees and plead for her forgiveness, using images of them being together when he was younger and finally at 2:50 she's realizing that he's NOT taking it and blocking her out, that pause, that look on her face of surprise, then finally the frustrated clench of her teeth and more screaming out of anger like a, "No! This is MY goodbye! Not yours! I'M the one leaving!" This is by far my favorite interpretation of this scene by far. The others are incredible! But this one sings to me on a spiritual level.

Yeah. In love the fact she seems distressed from their parting but neither is willing to apologize or make up. This hurt both of them in different ways. This relationship has been years in making. Though she wasnt looking for a friend and him a mentor they cant deny or admit they did become both. I think Athena folly was she saw Odysseus as a tool to use as she saw fit but as she says "hes just a man" flawed and all. He could never. Turn off all his emotions and act with cold logic. He's human and that was something Athena could never understand. For being goddess of wisdom she was very short sighted. I mean, in the myths, Gods are always taller than human. I don’t remember what ancient poet said that, but i remember something along the lines of “if one of the Gods were to stand up in the home of a human, they would touch the ceiling with their head.” So, yes. So, this thing takes place in Odysseus' head, more or less, given that Jorge describes Quick Thought as being entire mental conversations happening in an instant, if I remember correctly. And to me that just makes this whole animatic more impactful. The verbal lashing out between the two of them literally expresses itself as a brawl - Athena's shouts creating a wind, clawing and tearing at him in owl form, and then when she tries to fly away, _then_ Odysseus can return that favour, literally throwing his sword out to hit her. Also, a mental image of Odysseus being able to physically harm a mental image of Athena, a literal goddess, seems a little bit more realistic than him managing the actual thing :P Odysseus taking off his bracers, the ones from your previous animatic, and then stomping on them - if Athena wants to wash her hands of him, then he's more than willing to do the same, and that includes refusing her gifts. Also, the only times when Athena actually shows any emotion but anger and disappointment? 1:00 she looks shocked when he hits her with the sword, which could be surprise at the fact that he, as a mortal, _dares_ to speak back or that it actually works. 1:20, when Odysseus' back is physically turned to her, she looks... sad? Ashamed? And 2:10, when even _then_ as he's poised to take the 'killing blow' as it were, his sword is turned aside. Even against _Athena_ who is berating him for not making that decision, right now, in this moment, Odysseus chooses mercy. He cries. And she just looks... stunned. I love this one, so much.

Underneath it all I think Odysseus was right and we see that almost childish ignorance of perspective that Athena has since she is so removed from the hearts of mortals. Unable to truly process her frustration she lashes out at him like a pet that isn’t listening. The arc these characters follow is beautifully captured, so heartbreaking and full of emotion. Always love watching these videos, truly a master of storytelling!!

I love this so much! This interpretation is how i imagined a Goddess would react. Pissed, sad and a teeny bit desperate. I mean Athena, a Goddess, chose and promised that this mortal would be like them and would be able to push his mortality/humanity away. But instead chose wrong and made to be a fool in the eyes of her fellow Gods/Goddess' because of a human. That in itself should have been a death sentence for Odysseus.

This is a damn fresh take on the matter y'know! Many do just a verbal fight,which is completely okay,but seeing Odysseus and Athena actually fight physically? Being filled with so much raw emotion as each feel betrayed by the other?? Athena feeling hurt when Odysseus makes his parture official and doesn't bother to look or listen at her when she declares her goodbye for real???? THAT'S SOME DAMN GOOD STUFF!! And gosh her crossing the line showing his fallen comrades,his fallen _friend_ so much good stuff in a single animatic And I hope the little Lotus Eater sticks around with Odysseus forever cause the guy needs it

I don't think it totally lines up with the song, but I think making the two of them straight up brawl is awesome. What I love the most is turning Athena's last verse into a desperate attempt to get Odysseus's attention. I struggled for a while trying to figure out that last verse's intentions, originally I thought it sounded like the song was framing Athena as "in the right". The only other animatic I saw had Odysseus reaching out to her at that part of the song. I never thought of it being the other way around, but it fits so well. Mad props to you.

How do achieve maximum pain in “calm” panels? I thought the worst was past us (angry betrayal, the ruthless fight between them like yo I didn’t think they would resort to such violence with each other 😭) BUT THEN YOU LEFT THAT BLOODIED FEATHER WITH THOSE FOOTSTEPS Like bro I already thought I was in for a culinary experience that was way more than I could ever expect (like getting some food and it turning out to be so good you’re laying there DAZED because you’ve just been introduced to a whole new world of flavour and brain just cannot compute because it is so far out of your usual fare) and then you finish of with a scene that will haunt me forever. Just wow. It’s like you have my heart and casually left me another stab as you went on your way like how could you? 😭 There are just so many layers to unpack here and I am stunned that you fleshed out their characters so well and portrayed it so effectively. There’s a storm of emotion - mostly the past, the words and violence they are using to hurt each other in the present, and the loss and grief over what they saw in each other (the future they hoped for). Your characterisation of them sends me shivers because you really went in and had them claw out everything they had in their complicated relationship and WHY this had to fall apart here and now, in this very scene, in the face of what Odysseus had just done and has endured. And then there’s the execution and craft in the art itself. My god I cannot even begin to describe how genius the imagery was and everything was precisely honed to strike a point - a very painful point. You almost scare me with how well you account for the audience’s perception Like I was shocked that Odysseus would purposely aim for Athena’s wing, then she went for his neck, then their wrestling - every part was soaked in their pain. I don’t know what it is that gives me the shock factor that these two would actually go through those lengths. I’m used to seeing violence on screen - especially fiction - but these two people who care so much about each other, who give such heavy weight to what they think is important, who you portrayed as sparring - for training towards their dreams, a shared activity that shows how he’s grown under her tutelage, and probably something of a love language between master and student as wit and combat is their common ground - are now seeking outright HARM to the other from their ANGER AND HATRED. It is also their way of telling the other that their views are right - the only way the other would take their point. (I got sidetracked I’m so sorry) Like dude, you hit me with all that, make me feel something for violence along with the shock (SHE THREW AN APPLE AT HIM) with just the kind of brutality they were inflicting each other (the way it was reduced to the raw and angry scruffle after she pounced at him, these two greatest minds getting at it like this), and then when I think that the coast was clear you gave that bloodied feather. And the expressions. THE EXPRESSIONS There is so much to convey because of the storm inside their hearts and minds and you presented it all with a fine-tuned knife. You can excellently portray a wide array of emotions, and you carefully choose what and where to apply it for maximum effect. My personal favourite is after Odysseus stabs his sword beside Athena’s face, cutting off a lot of her hair. I just cannot stop thinking about how you chose to show the frame from an angle that has the sword cover Athena’s eyes and we have to watch her lips to read her - the soft sadness to wretched rage. Like I’m speechless that you also knew that the cards in your arsenal as an animator is what you show and how - but also what you DON’T SHOW. That I will never see Athena’s full expression there is more haunting than actually seeing it because it is her MOST vulnerable moment. Does anyone really know how a person looks or feels when you’ve been stripped bare and stabbed like that? By the person you felt this close to? The one you had hopes and dreams for? And EPIC’s choice that Athena’s number 1 motivation is to “create the greatest warrior” (and how she threw her heart in it no matter how she espouses the cold, efficient rationality herself. In her efforts to make the greatest mind she also left someone with the greatest capacity to break her heart). She raised that kid and look where they are. (Also ODYSSEUS’S TEARS FALLING ON ATHENA’S FACE MAKE ME WANT TO TEAR MY SKIN OFF MY BACK WHAT THE HELL HOW DO YOU EVEN-) (SHIT THAT PART WHERE YOU ZOOM INTO EACH OF THEIR EYES AND WHAT SHE FORCED HIM TO SEE/WHAT THEY THOUGHT/SAW) (THE ARM BRACES ARRGHHHHHH) (HIS REFLECTION WHEN HE POINTED THE SWORD AT HER) (HOW COULD I FORGET THE POETRY OF HER HARASSING HIM IN HER OWL FORM AND FLYING AWAY BEFORE HE THROWS A KNIFE THROUGH HER WING SO SHE DOESN’T GET TO BE SO HIGH AND MIGHT, SHE SHOULDN’T LOOK DOWN ON HIM WHEN HE CAN BRING HER DOWN TO HIS LEVEL.) (HE TRIED TO ESCAPE HER QUICK TIME 😭, DUDE REALLY FOUGHT AGAINST A GOD’S POWER AND BETWEEN HIS WITS AND HER NOT HAVING A GREAT TIME HE AT LEAST BROKE ONE WALL) (It’s his “good riddance” but it pains him so much and Athena feels so scorned that she does not leave him in peace / sends him one last wave to torment him before disappearing entirely.) (Please continue your amazing work! ❤) (So it turns out I spent over an hour writing all this because I had so much to say 😅)

Oh don’t mention it! Whenever possible, I want to make sure artists know how much I appreciate their art and I desperately did not want you to go without knowing what you made me experience. It’s luck on my part that I really read into your animatic. For most of the year my brain is too zombified from work to interpret any art so I’m glad my December lucidity caught onto your work. Your art knocked the wind out of me and I wasn’t going to leave without making sure you got to know how thankful I am to you for the efforts you put in and for sharing it for all of us internet strangers to watch. Also are you telling me that some of this was COINCIDENCE? Otherwise you might have unconsciously gravitated towards decisions that built on (and thus drove a knife further into my gut) what you laid out in Warrior of the Mind? Because the revisited themes and imagery (in a chillingly different tone and intention), coupled with how all that they are feeling and thinking is boiling over the surface and manifesting in every shared language and hopes they had for each other just makes it a critical hit that took EVERYTHING they had between them to fuel the ugliest break up I have ever seen. Do you realise how you have made art of the COMPLETE severance of their bond? They burned their bridges and hit the other where it hurts because they WANTED to hurt them while aggrieved by how they can’t keep the other in their life anymore. They took everything they had - past, present, future - and scalded the other because this is where they will end this in the worst way possible since the other has repairably wronged them. You brought all this to the surface and I spent that night lying there feeling like I’ve been drained of 10 years worth of emotions after I had to sit through and experience everything that went on between those two in this song. I thought I had gone through a marathon because of how many emotions and thoughts I had caught from them. That wasn’t intentional?!? Bro how is this not even your final form, do I need to brace myself for the day I go catatonic from watching another one of your works?! 😭 (this is all positive, I just can’t believe that there’s a chance you would top this and put me through even more of a ferocious whirlwind of an experience like I’m not ready! I’m still recovering from this animatic!)

I love how you portray the deities in ways that present them as more than humans with something extra. I also like this way you present the goodbye. Instead of Odysseus reaching out to her, it's her who does it, her last verses getting louder and more desperate with each cry. I prefer this version, because I think it makes more sense, and shows us how deeply Odysseus actually affected her and her heart.

Adding to the list of symbolism for the apple lol. It reminds me of what started the trojan war in the first place, the golden apple. It's like a slap in the face for Athena, who wasn't chose despite her talents. She wants that recognition as a god, & wanted Odysseus to help her get it. When he leaves, it's like being rejected again...🍎

I absolutely love the part where Athena goes from angry to realisation that Odysseus isn’t turning back to her only for her to get even more angry with him. 2:49 She believes if she tells him enough times he’ll come back to her in fear she’s really leaving but to her shock *he isn’t* he’s genuinely done with her and taking her “goodbye” 110% seriously and walks away despite the pain. I honestly feel bad for her despite her power will and influence as a literal goddess she’s completely *powerless* changing Odysseus’ mind on staying with her and to be scolded. Sure does hurt when you no longer have a say in what they for they’ve already turned away and gone.

This version is so raw. Like theyre equals here. He clipped her wings in the beginning and it never recovered the whole time 3:03 Odysseus covering his ears and blocking all the good times so he can leave is such a good touch. 2:46 Like listening to the song itself i felt like athena had the upper hand the whole time but here it's like shes the one who lost something special. She was trying to knock some sense into him but he walked away instead. This HURTS. Her expressions are so raw!! Beautifully animated!! its like she wants to help him but he wont let her. He knew exactly how to hurt her and he did. It's a fun and tragic interpretation. And then she phases out for good. It's super sad. Odysseus really loses everything during his voyage
@halfknight2310 Жыл бұрын
what i love is the disconection. despite being so wise, athena is disconnected to the connections humans make. she calls oddyseus a fool for being sentimental. for being reckless after the loss of his friends. yet, it's a very human thing. it's a normal thing to do. yet she doesn't see it. she doesn't understand, odyseuss saw her as his friend. not just a teacher, but his friend. kinda reminds me of a current project i'm working on. i am making a book of a character who is a God. It's on the concept of how a god can't understand mortals. so, he observes the universe, hoping to finish his "masterpiece". a project that allows someone to understand and learn of the universe. he's got all the scientific and physical parts down. yet, he can't understand the major pieces. mortals. he lacks understanding of mortals. how they live their lives. how they can live such fulfilling lives in such a short time. he fails to understand the minds of mortals. so, he crafts a mortal form to explore a world of his choosing. it just os happens, to be earth. cause he wants to understand the mortals, and what better way than to become them.

Bruh, I'm sad now. Also, the apple is a nice touch, because I think it represents the Apple of Discord, which is one of the main reasons the Trojan War began, which was why Odysseus left Ithaca in the first place, which also means it is why they fought Polyphemus in the first place as well.

This feel like a good representation of how man and god will never truly mix, will never truly be able to give the other exactly what they need. And I love how you conveyed that Odysseus finally, clearly saw that his god isn't infallible and will never be able to understand the value of what she and all those like her were urging him to toss aside; humanity. The one thing gods will never taste, never understand, never be able to account for, and the one thing that draws them to mankind in the first place. And it feels like she's as startled by the tears falling on her face as she is by being bested by a mortal. Confused and shaken for a just a moment before the wrath of a spurned god returns

This was far more violent and somber than the other animatics I have seen for this song, and while there were some parts that felt odd (why break through a barrier, were they in a force field?), the animation style, execution, and action were astonishing and that look at 2:12 and the rage and sadness on Odysseus's face prior to that were the best I have seen. I also love how this has more action and movement to it, the other animatics mostly have the two talking and circling/studying each other, but this actually has them fight in a menacing way that also communicates their sadness. Love it!

My interpretation is the battle is happening in his head. Him breaking out of the force-field is him symbolically leaving her influence/breaking out of her arena. Athena simultaneously going through conflicting "no, I'm kicking you out/but don't leave" type of emotions

I love the violence and passion in this. A skilled physical battle would be the one thing that Athena would respect. Odysseus wanted her to understand and respect his decision to spare Polyphemus, and to know it wasn't out of fear or weakness. He is not a weak man. He was trained by her and he's equal in skill with her, if not moreso since he's able to get a few good hits in and actually pins her. The student surpassing the master so to speak. But this rebellious attitude really hurt Athena's pride and she cut off ties with him to save her own ego. I wonder if in the first chorus she only meant to say she wouldn't help him face the consequences of naming himself to Polyphemus, but by the end the two of them have burned down everything they had built and it was a permanent goodbye.
