Bobby Darin is one of the best, & Mack The Knife was his biggest hit. This version from The Ed Sullivan Show (which was on at 8pm Sunday nights, from 1948 until 1973) is THE best rendition I've ever heard!! Bobby had several hits before Mack, & several after. My favorite is Artificial Flowers. Beyond The Sea & Clementine are also great!!! So are most of his songs. Sadly, he had major health problems throughout his life & he died in 1973 of heart trouble at the way-too-young age of 37. But even almost 50 years later, he remains one of the GOATs!!!

I loved Bobby's show, too. Like the Dean Martin show, it was always entertaining in the coolest, most laid back way.💜

'Mak the Knife' certainly was a hit at the time & still is for me!!! Such a talented man with such a heart. I also love another of his songs 'Beyond the sea', just beautiful. He was such a lovely gentleman & so sad he was taken ill at the age 37, & had been for a very long time. He is still ace. RIP Bobby 💔💔

The Ed Sullivan Show was THE show to be on. It was on Sunday nights and was "must watch TV". Our family usually had a big Sunday dinner after church so supper was light and we often ate off TV trays while watching Ed Sullivan. A typical show had a comedian or two, a scene from a Broadway show, and several musical acts which typically included one or more for the teen audience and one or more for the older folks. He introduced huge acts to the US: Elvis, Beatles, Sly and the Family Stone, the Doors . . . even Carol Burnett got her first National exposure singing a comedy song on Ed Sullivan. He was so successful because he had a knack for recognizing what the people wanted, rather than trying to force people to like what he liked.

Wow!! Another Bobby Darin❤❤❤. When I was very young maybe 3 or 4, I do remember this, I heard my Uncle (dear to my heart!) sing this all the time (and he was good!) When I finally heard it on the radio, I was outraged and yelled “Uncle Danny! He stole your song! 😡. He cracked up and laughed for a long time. I got a big hug for that ,lol. The sad part is that Bobby Darin died young, 37 I think and he had known from childhood that He would die young from a bad heart. I think he lived about 20 years longer than they expected. that’s why he worked so hard. Reminds me of Elvis working thru all his health issues. Bobby had to go back stage and suck on some serious oxygen during his performances. makes what he did manage to leave behind so precious. Thanks for doing this.

This song was written in 1928. In 1973, after failing to take antibiotics to protect his heart before a dental visit, Darin developed sepsis, an overwhelming systemic infection, which further weakened his body and affected one of his heart valves. On December 11, he checked himself in to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles for another round of open-heart surgery to repair the two artificial heart valves he had received in January 1971.[1] On the evening of December 19, a four-person surgical team worked for over six hours to repair his damaged heart. Shortly after the surgery ended in the early morning hours of December 20, 1973, Darin died in the recovery room without regaining consciousness. He was 37 years old.[2][3] Darin's last wish in his will was that his body be donated to science for medical research. His remains were transferred to the UCLA Medical Center shortly after his death.[3] RIP Bobby. The Ed Sullivan Show was a popular variety show that all artists wanted to appear on.

Ed Sullivan was huge! The biggest thing was when the Beatles performed on the show. Lotte Leyna was the wife of Kurt Weill, the composer of this song. Today she is best known for her role as Rosa Klebb in From Russia With Love, the second James Bond film.

Ed Sullivan was a newspaperman who became the host of "Talk of the Town," which eventually became known as The Ed Sullivan Show. A staple on CBS-TV's Sunday night lineup for over two decades. The show was a one-hour variety show, with everything you could imagine from stand-up comedians to musicians to dancers to acrobatics to ventriloquists to dramatic scenes from Broadway plays. It was a little bit of everything. And everyone who was anyone appeared on the show. Sullivan had all the greats on the show in all the various genres and disciplines. He was the first to bring The Beatles to America, long before anyone else in America had really heard of them. He was a giant in the industry, and his show sat at #1 in the ratings for years and years, eventually settling into a perennial top ten position. Which is why CBS kept it in their Sunday night lineup for so many years (from the '50s through sometime in the '70s, as I recall). By the way, there is a fantastic 1973 performance by Bobby Darin of "If I Were A Carpenter" on KZbin. It's live; he's wearing a pale blue dress shirt. Definitely worth checking out. Totally different from this. Sadly, it was only a few months before his death. He left us much too young.

Mack the Knife was composed by Kurt Weill & Bertolt Brecht for the musical Threepenny Opera (1931). The original lyrics were in German, but were later translated, and it became a jazz standard, sung by Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and others. The song features the character, Macheath, who was a murderer and head of a criminal gang. Nothing like a comedy.

If a performer made it on The Ed Sullivan Show that performer made it in their career. If Ed called him over after the performance that was the feather in his cap. It was Ed Sullivan that gave the parents of Elvis fans the okay to like him. After he called Elvis over after his performance and told everyone, "This is a very nice boy." Elvis was quite respectful and always said "yes, sir" and "no, sir" and was thankful to be on the show. When Ed had the Beatles on his show that helped to seal their popularity in the U.S.

Thanks for another Darin hit. I realize by watching him, he observed Sinatra for a while. If Darin was wearing a tux, you would've thought he was part of the "rat pack". Ed Sullivan was a famous New York City figure who knew everyone. He was a newspaperman, critic, social commenter. His show was on for about 20+ years. It falls into the variety show which was very popular in the 50's and 60's. Sullivan could get anyone to perform on his show. In my family, we watched Ed Sullivan every Sunday evening at 8p.m. Much of America was doing the same. If you were new to the business, one appearance on his show meant you had made it. (Late-night talk shows have filled this bill for comedians.) Sullivan had just about every English rock group starting with the Beatles. And just as easily brought us Elvis when he first started out in the mid 50's. He even had the world's greatest opera singers on his show. Acrobats, dancers, comics, etc., etc. It really was a variety show.

Ed didn't get Elvis easily. Early 1956, Col. Parker tried to get Elvis on Ed’s show, for $5K. Ed famously turned him down & said he’d never have Elvis on. Elvis's career skyrocketed & just months later, Elvis was so big, Ed couldn't avoid having him on. Ed had to go to Parker, who strong-armed him into a 3 show deal, for $50K (bet Ed wished he'd paid the $5K). By the time of his 1st Sullivan appearance (Sep. 9, 1956), Elvis already had 5 #1s (on Pop, Country & R&B charts), had appeared 4 times on other national shows, was about to release his 1st movie (Love Me Tender, Nov. 1956), was signed for 2 more movies, while also recording (what would be more hits). By the final show, Ed had clearly changed his opinion of Elvis saying; “I wanted to say to Elvis Presley & the country, that this is a real, decent, fine boy.” “We want to say that we’ve never had a pleasanter experience on our show, with a big name, than we’ve had with you.”

When you were on The Ed Sullivan Show, you had made the big time. This video is good, it's easier to understand the lyrics. But for that brass band, you've got to hear the studio version, it has much more impact, much brighter and sharper. You'll want to hear it. You could also do reactions to the Ed Sullivan Show, it ran for twenty years and showcased thousands of famous artists.

TRIVIA: Johnny Carson's band leader Doc Severinsen (still alive at 96) played trumpet on that recording. Also the wife of the composer Kurt Weill was a singer named Lotte Lenya. And she was put into the song as one of Mack the Knifes victims.

Bobby covered almost every genre in his 37 years. There are songs (great ones) which have never even been released. Ray Charles and Sam Cooke were revered by Bobby. He apparently would listen to Ray Charles albums into the wee hours. Bobby was amazing at swing. Check out his 7 min long live version of Drown In My Own Tears. That ‘One More Once’ line was also poplar with Sam Cooke and Bobby Rydell. Bobby was good friends with Sammy Davies Jnr and Elvis too.

Fun fact, Mack the Knife is from Bertold Brecht's Threepenny Opera, about criminals and the underclass. Mack Heath was the antihero of the play who had a penchant for stealing and murder. Mack was gangster Macheath. The women mentioned are prostitutes. It was sung in the Three Penny Opera of the 1920's which was taken from another opera in 1727. Macheath was a highwayman in that.

Fun Fact: I was born the same day that Bobby Darin died. Same day, same month, same year - and I was born 4 minutes after he died. I actually read his death certificate and compared it to my birth certificate. He died at 12:15am in Los Angeles, which is 3 hours behind Eastern Standard Time. I was born in Ohio at 3:19am. Taking in the time difference that means that I was born 4 minutes after he was declared dead. I always found that strangely fascinating. P.S. - we need some more of your Steve Perry reactions! I humbly have a suggestion for you. Steve made a video in his home studio in 2020 during Covid. A Beach Boys cover of "In my Room." He was 69 years old when he recorded it, and it's just him and a microphone. That's it. No instruments. Still so much talent, though he seemed a bit out of breath - perhaps fighting off a cold or something? nevertheless, he still sounds great, especially for his age and having no instruments or technology assisting him in the video performance. At the end of the video, just before he shuts it off, he whispers "hang in there" as we were all in lockdown at the time. What a sweet man to give us his talent and a kind message when we all were in need of positivity - especially considering how notoriously private he is in his personal life.
