My Gransfors Bruk American Felling Axe BROKE!!!

Definitely a steel issue. They'll replace it for you. Occasionally happens. Seen a few gransfors with the same problem but it's probably a rare occurrence

For the steel they use (recycled rough equivalent to about a 1060) Gransfors massively over hardens the edge and I have seen a lot of them crack or break a lot worse than this! 20F is not too cold for an axe, steel does not become brittle at that temperature.

I wasn’t sure what the equivalent was, but I know that they’re hard enough that they’ll dull a file, which is too hard for any practical axe.

Something is off ..i used my gba felling axe in -30 for a week not an issue. I hope you get your replacement blade

Gransfors hardens their particular steel a little too high to have enough metallurgic elasticity in cold temperatures. I’ve seen this happen several times unfortunately and I feel for you, I really do. However I would consider the iltis line by ox head/ochsenkopf. The steel in that line is designed to handle extreme low temps. The edge holding is notably better and the geometry is perfect for the kind of work you’re doing. Just my two cents. They don’t have the finish like GB but make up for it in design and consistency. I hope everything worked out in your favor!

The only time I broke an axe like that is when I've hit a steel wedge with it and I've been using axes for 25 years now.
