David - this was great! Am glad that you realized that management is not for you and for having the courage to follow your heart and your instincts. I have been in IT my whole career (and that is a LOOONG time), and the idea of being a manager was never appealing to me. You have made an impact on many lives with your channel and your courses - what could be better than that? If I hadn't seen the YT commercial you did many years ago for Mike Wheeler's Salesforce Admin Udemy class, I never know of the opportunities that self-study and certifications offer. Keep the inspiration coming - your legions of fans love it!!!

Thanks for sharing David, you are the best. I was on the verge of tears listening to you especially the second example. I am so scared of failing that I try to prevent it by not putting myself out there. It's something I have struggled with for years. I know I have the potential to do so much more but feel paralyzed by fear. Maybe this is a sign to start to face my fear of failure.

Thanks for sharing David! I wouldn't call them failures, i'll call them painful life experiences :) 1st one was clearly an accident, assuming you had zero malicious intent on hitting a child. 2nd you gave management a try and you find out you didn't like it, which is completely fine. It would be a failure if you had actually stay on even longer :P

David, you are so inspiring. How did you balance the emotions of (quitting) losing the position vs waiting for something better? I mean were you unhappy for a while when you did that?
@dvdkliu
@dvdkliu 4 жыл бұрын
Still unhappy about it to be honest. I still wonder if I should give it another try. The biggest thing though is I look at all the managers in my org and I don't envy their job one bit. Not even for 3x my pay. And that to me is a sign it's not for me. In terms of making $$ I believe individual contributors have opportunities to make more money than managers, esp with side gigs

Funny coincidence: I was asked today by my manager about my future career planning and gave me two choices: Independent contractor or management role. They told me that they can help me plan a career path where if I choose management then I would first be given mentorship which would enhance my skills and then later may be provided a team to lead. What I did next is still making me baffled. I started saying that I gravitate towards IC role, but then I moved my discussion towards the fact that I *can* take a management role. But deep down inside I think I know the introvert I am. I only changed my preference since I thought maybe I would get a good promotion and a good raise if I choose people leadership. I think I should correct my mistake tomorrow by coming out and speaking the truth. Or should I? Maybe I can give management a chance? I really am not sure.
@dvdkliu
@dvdkliu 4 жыл бұрын
You're right it's like the exact situation I went through. I learned a lot about myself from trying the management path that I would've never learned otherwise, so I don't regret it. If I could go back in time I'd probably still try the manager route
@VineetKumarX
@VineetKumarX 4 жыл бұрын
@@dvdkliu. Yes as much as I would love to be an independent contractor (probably because that sounds cooler in my head), I wouldn't know if I have the skills of leadership if I don't give it a shot. And even if I fail, I wouldn't regret since its not like a one way street, as you proved!
