Simple, practical and effective - the whole point of a 4wd. I'm loving how people are getting back on board with basics.. way less to worry about going wrong or breaking. Like you I also removed my left rear swing arm as I couldn't justify the extra weight for the standard 4wd trips where a second spare just isn't necessary and also where you can run on board water so no point even running a jerry out the back either (keep as much weight between or on the axles) - potentially saving 60-80kg off the back! I think my next move is like you and installing a false floor set up where the 2nd row seats are so i can move even more of the heavy stuff in my rear drawers to there (tools etc).

G'day Nick, Thanks mate. This new setup is very simple, but also very affective. With the massive weight reduction, it is now amazing the difference the Patrol is to drive. Getting as much weight forward of the front wheels, changes the whole feel of how the car drives and handles. My video this Monday night is going into the rebuild in more detail. I have removed everything out, so you can see how i went about the built. Thanks again for your reply and feedback, i greatly appreciate it. Cheers Tim.

Used this kinda setup with a little trolley from the start(small budget off coarse) and move with the shade around the trees or what ever, always picking the best shade or sunny spot even far from where my vehicle are. Getting to and away from the car the whole time bogs freedom. Drawers systems just a space gobbler and all heavy stuff elevated 30 cm and more. Looking forward how your patrol is going to handle. Thanks, Tim for a well illustrated video.

Awesome work Tim. Lighter, simpler and a fresh start. It's freaky how similar your change is to what I've done few months ago. I ditched the Kings draws. 75kg gone there and went to the Expedition tubs. 2 of them in the rear with a simple false floor and fridge. Now when NOT going away, it's a matter of putting the boxes in the garage. Lots of space gained and no weight to carry around the city. I also installed the Horizon Touring GU storage boxes. Which make use of the cavity in the rear of the Patrol. Otherwise wasted space is now room for a battery and/or other bits and pieces. Look them up, great bit of kit mate. Cheers!

For awhile I was using a filing cabinet in the back of my GU which worked well as it was $10 2nd hand, sturdy, lockable, fit perfectly next to the fridge and was removable. But I then bought a JKU as well and it didn’t fit in that, so now I use Wolf Packs and canvas bags. Keeps the weight down, everything has its place and they easily be swapped between vehicles, is super light weight and can be stored in the shed when not in use

Very tidy and well organised, this is similar to my own setup which I’ve always been happy with, and one of the main reasons is how versatile it is, different trips sometimes need a change in needs and with this anything will go. I have always “ fancied” a drawer system but now you have confirmed that for me I have a good system already. This is only the second video I have viewed of yours and I have really enjoyed it, thank you. I live in the UK and contrary to what some have said there is some excellent Overlanding/exploring to be enjoyed in Uk and Europe. however at the moment no one is going anywhere because of the dreaded Lurgi lockdown ( Lurgi, from 1950s radio show, The Goons) I wish you well and good travels,

Love this... Lateral thinking to the way you want. did the same to my 200 series. Middle and back seats out but with 1200mm alloy drawers in the rear. Then a simple frame with a ply cover at same height so its one level when its a daily driver. I have it set out with fridge and microwave (yes I don't cook extravaganzas like you) and this enables me to sleep down the other side inside the car. I'm out of the elements, good ventilation and off the ground. I also don't do swags or RTT's as I have only 1 leg... All good..... I put on a Darche 270d awning as it is easy for me to setup and pack up (unlike a swag or a RTT. Weight distributed evenly with AGM battery and storage etc Yes very weight conscious and wanted to setup my way.. Awesome stuff. If there is a youtube meet and greet happy to come down as the comments on your videos from viewers makes for good thought. Cheers Mick

I have done a similar set up in my patrol to what you have done except I made a false floor about the same hight as the centre console and I can put my boxes comfortably under the floor from the passenger doors. I swapped out the 40 ltr chest fridge for a 40 ltr upright Engel that fits perfectly in the left hand passenger door. And still have a tone of space to roll the swag out and sleep on top of the false floor or on longer trips store extra gear. Hope to see you on the tracks one day. Keep up the great work 👍

Lovely setup now mate! I dunno I could do without the convenience of drawers vs the plastic tubs . . . . Love the idea of weightloss tho 👍👌🤔 I used to have the same Jerry can setup for water storage but have moved to a frootwell tank - 40L right behind the front seats is a nice place for that weight rather than up that high. I can stack a row of 4 X 10L boxes of spring water on top so it's a really easy to carry 80L. The tank sits snugly between the front seats and the box I made to replace the 2nd row seats which is fixed in place by the original seat bolts and bolted to the drawers so it's rock solid and works a treat 👌👍 Keep up the great vids mate 😄

I think simplicity is best. There are plenty of accessory retailers happy to sell you gear to overload your truck. I think your setup much depends on your stage of life and the places you want to go. This is exactly the reasoning I was using setting up my vehicle. I saw all those channels with 4wd's that had gear coming out of the wazoo and wasn't convinced that it was the way to go tbh. Couldn't get over the weight and financial cost of it all. The other thing you could do is make a bit of a lightweight top to go on the top of a box so you could stack a couple up and use them as a bit of a table if needed. Also you may do a daytrip and not need all the gear so just take one or two as needed.

Although there is a headrest involved, I'm not sure what will happen in terms of a head on accident. Would it stay in position, or become a missile aimed at the back of your head ? Looking forward to your next upload. Always entertaining. Thanks for all the hard work in providing quality content.

G'day Kevin, Yeah mate, its solid where it is mounted. It has a top and bottom plate plus the threaded rod and lock nuts holding it down. Thanks mate for your reply and i appreciate your feedback. Cheers Tim.

Hi Tim, we’ll be interested to hear your thoughts after you have done a few trips with the setup. Removing the back seat certainly opens up the options. Where is your 2nd battery? Also you mentioned a compressor in one of the tubs. Do you run a separate compressor for the air lockers ? Keep up the good work Cheers...

G'day mate, Yeah Ill do another video down the track after the boxes have been on a few trips. My second battery is under the bonnet mate. The compressor in the box is only for my tyres. The compressor for the lockers is also under the bonnet. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.

I'd love to have some modular boxes that had drawers built into them. That would be perfect for my Patrol. Slide the drawers out when they are stacked up in the car, or lift the lid off when they are out of the car by the tent, cooking area, etc.

G'day mate, Yeah it's hard finding that perfect setup for our 4WD's. Just need to find a setup that is simple enough, and works at the same time. Thank for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.

Went the same route in the Colorado; also means I can use the tray for Ute things when needed. Also cost is another thing - Tactix boxes from Bunnings were about 1/10th the cost of a draw set.

Yeah spot on mate. Cost and weight savings for plastic storage boxes play massive benefits. Plus when i take the boxes out, i can now use the back for tip runs and things like that. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.

lts a bit of a conundrum setting up our rigs, for me l want to be able to sleep in my rig. l to have plastic boxs in the back already and fitted a shelve in one of the gullwing windows,l am constantly changing my setup to suit what l am doing, for example l tow a van sometimes so the bed inside the vehicle is not needed. My fridge setup is tricky because its a 60lt engel fridge freezer and its a problem trying to build a spot for that,as like you l have the fridge on the passenger rear side but l am thinking of putting it in the middle so the driver and passenger can reach around and get a coldy. The perfect setup rig is changed all the time to suit your needs at the time.

G'day Greg, Im really hoping this is the last time i make any big changes like this. I've had two sets of draws and now the storage boxes. This is a top setup and will work well going forward. The fridge where i have it now, is great. So easy to get into. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
