I have been conscious of digital minimalism for a long time, everything digital I have is extremely organised and uniformed. One thing I would recommend to anyone trying to be more conscious of your digital footprint is to make a note with every single website you have an account on, once you have made it go through and delete all the ones you no longer need.

Hey Matt, awesome video. Here are some tips that have worked for me, and that you and others may consider! 1. Get a GSuite Business account. You get unlimited Google Drive storage for $12/user/mo. Works with your Backup And Sync App (which for me works BETTER than the Drive File Stream App), and allows you to back up all your photos at Full Quality on Google Photos. 2. Disabling all notifications is a big win! Completely agree with you here. 3. FILE NAMING. I recently started using a file naming convention and it is amazing. I know where everything is at all times. This is what works for me: File Type Folder > Application Folder > Year Folder > Project Folder (with MM/DD) Example: Pictures > Photoshop > 2020 > 01-14 Best Cell Phone Plans > bestplans.psd (relevant resources for this PSD file are also here) Example 2: Documents > PDFs > Taxes > 2019 > 1099 - Betterment.PDF 4. For DATA BACKUP: if you opt for the GSuite Business account and use the Backup and Sync app, all folders you select will be kept backed up. If you’d like to use an external hard drive like Matt, PARTITION your hard drive and use TIME MACHINE. Time Machine automatically backs up everything on your Mac, but the backups will expand to FILL THE ENTIRE SPACE OF THE DRIVE. My workaround is to partition your external hard drive so one partition is 110% or so of your actual computer storage. 500GB storage? Then Make a 550GB partition. Use this partition for Time Machine. It will fill it up, and you can use the remaining space on the external hard drive as a normal hard drive. 5. PRODUCTIVITY APPS: Consider Fantastical & Todoist! These apps are phenomenal, well designed, and well built. They support natural language input, can be used completely separately, or integrated beautifully together. Best of luck and stay productive 🙏🏻

I like to keep things simple. Helps to stay focused and really get the most out of your time.Just do this:Set up your real life and digital environment for the purpose you want to use it for.Only use things/apps, that serve this purpose to reduce friction.Always look for those tiny distractions during your working process and get rid of them, so they no longer can distract you. That's it. It is that simple. Just try it out and you'll see the benefits of living you life that way. It is just a matter of awareness of the things you do each day. Which ones will improve your life in the long run and which do not?Greetings from Germany.

Awesome video! Quick tip on notifications on your Mac: if you don't ever want to receive notification for any app (like myself), instead of disabling it for every single one, you can go to system preferences -> notification -> do not disturb -> and then enable it automatically. I have it set up to enable automatically from 4:01am until 04:00 the next morning (that's the only way I figured out to always keep it on).

Loved this video mate, I have a very similar approach to my digital minimalism. Just a quick note to anybody “backing up” content; it is only a backup if you have two copies. Transferring files to an external drive isn’t a backup, it’s just a single copy and thus isn’t actually backed up. I would recommend having two drives, one that is the copy and the other is the backup, ideally kept somewhere away from your property so in case of theft or damage you don’t lose both. A digital backup is also great and can be accessed remotely.

Came for the minimalism stayed for the ASMR. It seems that large internal storage on devices has become redundant due to the use of multiple work devices. Small SSDs like the T5 are a game-changer, fast enough to work on the go, even edit videos, then come home and plug it into the main rig without worrying about bulk and reliability. The only thing I can't get used to is cloud storage, because I need to constantly access assets from old creative projects which would mean downloading them every time.

I really need to get rid of my excess computers, because I was kinda 'collecting' ThinkPads and I've now got too many. I can list the ones I use first: I have my "best" ThinkPad, a T440s that i bring with me when I travel. My X220 that I use at home on the couch because of the neat size and the dock which I charge it in. My Yoga S1 that is at my parents' house whenever I visit, so that I don't have to remember bringing a laptop. Also my X201i which is a dedicated music PC in my bar at home. And that's about it. This does not include my two desktops, my main minimalist blacked out "gaming rig" (rarely play games anymore) and my HTPC for my TV. I also have a couple of T420s, couple T61, a T43 and an X301. These are never used and could probably be sold, although the T43 is a novelty being a proper IBM and rare to find. So I might keep that... maybe. help. Oh and also an L440 at work which is my private laptop that I can install custom software on since our corporate ThinkPads are locked down. Working as an automation technician I use a lot of different programming software in the field.

Going paperless has been huge for me, I constantly take notes by hand so I bought an iPad Pro + Apple Pencil and it's cut down on my use for notebooks big time. Plus I used to have a 2-3 different colored pens since I preferred to differentiate and highlight specific things in my notes but now with the Apple Pencil I have every color and highlighter that I'll ever need in one pencil. I would highly recommend it to anyone who can afford it, it takes about a week or 2 to get used to, but after that you'll never go back. I've even taken drawing up as a hobby on the iPad since it's such a pleasure to use, it just inspires creativity. If you use Facebook, the Social Fixer plugin is a must. You can hide parts of the Facebook page that you don't use. I use it to hide the stories tab, ads, the birthdays and all those eyesores. Essentially my Facebook homepage only contains just the news feed now. But then again, this is Matt's channel. I guess everyone here knows Facebook is cancer anyway. I just use Facebook for the Spongebob memes and for communication with people in college. Edit: i forgot to mention, the best thing about this plugin is removing the 'people you may know' tab which is just god damn creepy

So I used an approach inspired by the concept of focusing on your strengths rather than your weaknesses. I tried limiting my time on social media and other apps that added nothing to my life or productivity but never worked, I kept coming back when I was bored. Then I realized I am a fan of technology and I can’t stay away from it so I found different activities to do on my iPad / iPhone. Now I have at least one or two books downloaded on my books app. When I’m bored I just open the app and start reading. This has also helped accomplish my reading goals and use my down time more efficiently. Now the most used app is the books app by more than 5 hours from the second most used app. Hope this helps anyone ✌🏽

digital minimalism is so underlooked but it is yet so important. in an increasingly digital society, being able to organise urself is extremely improves quality of life and reduces stress.

I have been working on my computer alot in the past, and came up with a good system. of course it's always changing a little. I have a promise to myself to always keep my desk-drop empty, at least on the main screen. And even if I'm an artist I have this dark gray background that feels good for my eyes.

Actually, HDD is way better than SSD in a long run. Those “moving parts” make it last longer than SSD’s limited number of memory cells that get damaged with many R/W operations. They are faster, but don’t last as long.
