You've brought back memories again Dave. I remember seeing Iron Maiden play at the Pavilion in our little town up the road in Ayr way back in 1980 which was great for us cos normally we'd have to travel on the train up to the Glasgow Apollo to see Bands. If you stayed for the encores - which we always did.- You missed the last train home! Many a night we spent huddled in Glasgow Central until 6'o clock in the morning! The pavilion or (the Piv as locals called it) was quite small and intimate and the crowd had a great time with Dave Murray on great form. Paul Di Anno was the singer then and the whole band were really up for it as was the crowd. Great times!🎸 you're a good man Dave and I've always appreciated your humble approach like my hero Mr P. Green, which just bursts through your guitar playing. keep safe and keep rocking. Respect as usual from Ayrshire 👍

To be honest as a guitarist myself, I like both Murray and Smith and both of them have influenced my style of guitar playing. Love it Dave, one of the first videos I watched of yours was referencing Dave Murray back when you had the replica, I subscribed off the back of it, as a non player your observations on Dave’s playing are exactly the same as what got me into Iron Maiden in 1988, I remember buying Seventh Son and Master of Puppets on cassette (what a life changing day that was), some months later probably in 89 I bought Maiden England on VHS and literally watched it every day after school ( still got it & on DVD now too) I loved the whole band but Dave’s playing on his white ESP Strat replica & his black Strat blew me away, if you’ve never seen Maiden England you must take the time to do so. Great video and really looking forward to seeing one on another guitar hero of mine Mike McCready.

Excellent video. Iron Maiden are so big and always talked about as a whole. That's probably how they would want it. Especially when for the most part the band are pretty quiet and private people. The individual musicians don't get talked about that much. I am a long time fan and often browse the internet looking for stuff. I don't think anyone has really talked about Dave Murray and covered his playing the way you just did. Wish there was another button higher than like for this video. Cheers :) PS. If there was one song I wish I could see them play live. It would be Alexander the Great.

Dave Simpson, Dave Murray and Adrian Smith, my perfect combo. I listened to Maiden for years and years and years, have all of their early (and best) albums, The Trooper was the first every record I bought. I always wanted to play those amazing Maiden solos and never did, found your channel on the Tube and while ago and I finally gave in and bought my first guitar and now 'trying' to learn. Therefore amazed and excited to learn that Dave is one of your heroes.

Loved maiden since early 80s , Dave Murray has always been a favourite, very underrated but such a natural talent, you are right Dennis Stratton is on the first album, fantastic album , if judged by today's standards there's not a lot to touch it .
@bobjames19724 жыл бұрын
Can I just say you must be a man of considerable taste and intellect lol. I could not agree more about the band and especially Dave Murray,I think he should be regarded so much higher than he is. My take is that he's always played for the band and for the music first and foremost.You don't hear of him championing Dave Murray it's always been all about Maiden.I always used to believe than genuine ability and talent would naturally rise to the top and be recognised because it speaks for itself but I've come to realise in reality that those who shout loudest regardless will be the ones who get heard even when they're not shouting anything that's worth listening to.So maybe him putting the music right above the greater reputation of Dave Murray explains a great deal about both his standing today and the quality of the man himself. I feel Adriam Smith is much better known than Dave ,in an ideal world it would be the other way round based on merit and ability but there it is,

My god,that's really REALLY good playing! I wish I could play like that. I try,but I can only do the more basic leads from Dave (and Adrian, too). I can just about play Phantom of the Opera. I can play the first solo,and part of the second...I just can't nail it. That first album is my favorite and it changed my life. I agree with everything you said about Mr Murray. My gf gets sick of hearing about Dave Murray, I'm sure. I think you and I would be good buddies in real life. Lol a lot in common. John Frusciante is another favorite. Dave Murray and especially Adrian Smith are my top 5 guitarist of all time. Sure there are a lot faster, more technical guitar virtuoso's out there, but Dave and Adrian would be welcome to play guitar in any huge metal band that needed a guitar player. For me Dave and Adrian are the absolute best guitar duo of all time, they have been playing harmonies together for so long and it always sounds great live :) I bought the Jackson SDX Adrian Smith signature and I want to either buy the Dave Murray Fender signature in the future or buy a Fender Strat and modify it to be as close as possible. This video was great and the intro piece reminded me a lot of the Maiden guitar sound from the Brave New World / Dance Of Death era, goose bumps melodies and clearly Murray inspired. I Think it could have sound a tiny bit better with the Seymour Duncan Hot Rail in the neck to make the solo pop even more, but it is close to perfect as It is. It surely came as a surprise that Mr. Simpson was a Dave Murray fan, cool to know!
@mathias6423 Жыл бұрын
So you got into the band by their first album that is cool. I got into them when me and my friends wanted something more advanced/technical to KISS that we were into when we were 8 years old 1993 :D The first albums we started with was Somewhere in time and Seventh Son album, 8 years old it really blew us away haha. It never crossed my mind growing up with KISS and other bands our parents were listening to that I wanted to play an instrument. After hearing Dave's and Adrian's harmonies and solos on those two albums It became clear to me that I wanted a guitar for my 9th birthday =) A Mexican Strat that me and few times my father played, those were the days. Dennis Stratton did not enjoy playing these "faster" songs, according to Harris he played songs like Strange World and other slower songs with more passion, hence they kicked him from the band, and on the second album we got the best guitar duo of all time Murray and Smith. I really like the trio we have now with Janick Gers thrown into the mix, they sound very full live when you get Dave's and Adrians' harmonies backed up by Janicks Rythm playing for example. The Brave New World tour in the 2000 was one of my absolute best live shows I have ever been to and I have been to a lot. Hope to see some more Maiden content on your channel, I had to sub to the channel after this and another video were you played your Ibanez JEMJR with the fan on, some great playing in that one! Can you not play a song on your guitar without copy right problems ? Is that really a thing ? I see people playing covers all the time on youtube ?! Please show us when you are playing phantom of the opera and other Maiden songs you know well, that would be truly awesome Mr Simpson!!!
@mathias6423 Жыл бұрын
About the chorus part, both Dave and Adrian has even more of it like you said, in later albums as well, just put on the first track caught somewhere in time or moonchild on seventh son. it is even more chorus, phaser, reverb than the first album. I just love that sound man, can not get enough of it. Would love to hear you play some of that end of -80s start of -90s Maiden sound and what effects you are using! I feel with Adrian the way you do with Dave. Dave is really fast and yeah, those fast legatos with constant flurry is awesome. But the way Adrian hit his notes and the kind of bluesy bends is just something else for me. Like Wasted years, Sea of Madness and Stranger in a strange land there is just so much soul in it, It is like every note he plays could be his last. Reminds me sometimes of another of my top guitarist David Gilmour in the way that they try to make the most out of every tone.

I first saw Dave on the World Piece and World Slavery tours in 1983/4 I think it was. I remember a Powerslave date at Hammersmith when Ozzy did a guest appearance but I was so focussed on Dave, I paid little attention to Ozzy. Anyway, Dave, Adrian and Janick were my favourite line up and I regularly listen to and watch Dance of Death to see just how tight they are. I'm nearly 60 now and in my heart I'm still a kid in the crowd when I hear anything from the NWOBHM period especially Maiden - up the Irons :-)

I remember chatting to bluesrock Danny Bryant after one of his gigs several years ago and we were chatting about favourite guitarists and I was delighted he mentioned Dave Murray as one of his , same as myself. Back in the day I was always drawn to Dave's sound and solos and always watched out for him on my regularly played Live after Death and Maiden England concert videos. I preferred his old fashioned strats too although I didn't know about pickups and trees and Floyd Rose Bridges at the time. I love Adrian's playing too and appreciate it more these days since learning some guitar myself but Dave is my No.1 in the band and one of my all time favourites.

I loved this, as I'm a big Iron maiden fan and have always enjoyed Dave Murray's playing. It was very interesting to see the way you played the Em Pentatonic at the 12th fret...I guess the one I've been using is the blues Pentatonic. I could see clearly how you played that, but it was hard to see the notes you played when you moved up the neck and used the G major...pattern? So if you could show how that scale works with Em I would be really grateful. If this seems a really dumb ask, and you feel it would be obvious to everyone else, please ignore me. But a part 2 on what chord progressions Dave uses a lot and how to "Gallop" if you know what I mean...sorta alternate picking really fast on one string, Maiden use it a lot but I've always had trouble with that technique. Cant wait for more videos like these on artists who have inspired you but like you say, you don't mention as much as John and Jimi :)
