In this video I talk about how to identify protein in your hair products. I also cover how to roughly determine if the product is a strong or light protein product.

I was extra surprised a couple months ago when I read the back of the Shea Moisture Manuka Honey "INTENSIVE HYDRATION" line and saw protein so high in the ingredients list 🙄 The whole time I was wondering why my hair felt so hard when all my products said intensive hydration!

Almost all of Shea Moistures products has some type of protein in it, not really low porosity friendly. AND THEY CANCELLED THE LOW POROSITY LINE, I’m upset!

GREAT INFOR. Numero Uno, understanding ingredients are vital to helping you through your hair journey, simply because it tells you a lot about the product, and if you know your hair, you can easily say "HUMM, that will NOT or WILL work" on my hair".

This happened to me when I’m was in my second year of transitioning to return to my natural. I bought when I came to visit family in Boston (I’m from montreal) the Shea moisture hisbicus (heavy in protein). There wasn’t a lot of products back then in 2014-2015 .I learned the hard way because my hair was getting hard .. Ever since then I’ve be looking ingredients in products.

Great content. I’m in the midst of learning moisture protein balance because of having a setback due to protein overload by using fenugreek too often. My hair broke off and now I’m starting over. Now I’m scared to use protein and I don’t have protein in any of my products.

If you are not coloring your hair, no heat (like hot hot tools, not a blow dryer on say cool/warm) and just using your basic, bog standard conditioner or drugstore mask, the drugstore (like: the cheaper stuff there) is good for more than one thing, but especially for this, because they will 9 out of 10 give you "balanced" products. Unless there's "keratin" on the bottle, and some such, then you have to pay attention! I have all virgin hair, and haven't had an issue left since ditching the bleach, the other dyes (chemical), and the natural dyes (henna + indigo). I did some wild things in my 20s & 30s. I am 48 now, and trust me... learned my lesson, more than once. ;)

@@ogbobbyjohnson2456 Same thing happened to me. I saved my hair with flexseed ( masks and homemade gel) marshmallow root and tons of water. I researched and discovered the cure for protein overload is LOTS of moisture. Good luck!

Thank you. I believe it was Curlsmith’s In-Shower Style Fixer (video coming soon) layered with Wetline. I ran out of product in the back, hence the uneven appearance of my hair. I used curl activator in place of the Curlsmith in the back.

Currently going through this right now. I thought it wasn’t possible for me to have protein overload since I wasn’t doing protein treatments,little did I know all my products had protein in it. Wish I knew my hair could’ve been salvaged before I cut off a few inches, but now I have hope that I can fix my hair through moisture treatments and protein free moisturizers! My hair seems to be protein sensitive. Any tips on how to get my hair back to health? How long did it take for yours to stop breaking after cutting out protein heavy products? Thanks, love your videos!

Thankfully, my bounce back was pretty smooth since I didn't incur a lot of damage. I didn't have a significant decrease in my hair's quality. It just wasn't retaining length. Your best bet is to switch to products with protein in the middle or at the bottom of the ingredients list. These low protein products will be on the moisturizing side. Any hair that is still damaged after doing this for a while may ultimately need to be cut off.

This is a great video! I remember doing protein treatments every week and getting protein overload which set me back. Scared me to trying protein again but since I bleach my hair and I have high porosity hair, I have been using Matcha Boost by Ecoslay for 5 to 10 minutes every wash day for two weeks now. My hair has been loving it! I follow up with a deep conditioner of course. I was wondering if I should just use that protein treatment or use a leave in with protein as well? Thanks!
@WhatTheKink
@WhatTheKink 3 жыл бұрын
You should always go with how your hair is responding. If you are happy with your hair as is, why add the extra protein from the leave in? :-)

Hi does oil real seal the moisture i heared many vedio thatvi doesn't seal the mositure , and after the wash and deep conditioner to close the cuticle shall we use apple cider vinegar rinse since it is acidic it closes the cuticle to retian mositure or it will make our hair dry?

The hair’s cuticle doesn’t really open and close like people think it does. Also, your regular conditioner will smooth the hair cuticle. Feel free to pick one with aloe vera in the ingredients if you’d like. More on cuticles: www.thenaturalhavenbloom.com/2013/03/junk-science-opening-hairs-cuticle-for.html?m=1

I don’t recommend the use of raw ingredients on my channel and neither do I use protein focused masks so I can’t really help you. There are plenty of others online that do these things and can better help you.
