Anthony, you introduced me to the AKG brand years ago and for that I'm forever grateful to you. I've had the K240s for 4 years now (and still use them at work) and recently upgraded to the K712s which sound fuckin' fantastic! Perhaps you should check them out if you didn't like the K702s, which I've also tested. IMO the K712s are an improved version of the K240s with a clearer, bigger and more detailed sound. Soundstage is great. Everything is warmer and bassier. The highs are not as annoyingly pronounced as on the 702s (example: jack white solo or janelle monae hitting those highs wre somewhat uncomfortable). Roland Kirk sounds especially gorgeous on them. More comfy, build is sturdier etc. Also thinking about getting a K550/553 as a closed back alternative.

PRO TIP: some music streaming apps (such as Spotify) has an inbuild equalizer, which allows you to turn up or down the frequencies of songs (which affects the lows, mids, highs etc.). I use a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50X, which is a pair of studio headphones with a very flat and accurate sound. By using an equalizer, I can (for example) tweak the bass for when I wanna hear some bangers on-the-go. It's very convenient.

For checking your mix's stereo image, or enjoying a natural, detailed sound when listening to non-bass dependent music at a moderate level in a quiet environment, the K240 Studio can absolutely shine, particular when you consider the low price. For almost anything else though, we’d recommend almost anything else. You meant to say Porta Pros, they are amazing for the price if you like your music darker.

I used to hate earbuds too until I grabbed my Mee Pinnacle P1 and was blown away by how good they are. They totally converted me on the in ear headphone. I also have a lot of problems with my ears and IEM's seem to be the thing that agitates my ears the least. Otherwise I used Sennheiser HD555's for about 7 years and I really like my Audio Technica ATH-M50X's that I picked up last year.

Tbh I own pairs of headphones in the $300+ range and the ones I use absolutely every day all day are the Koss KPH30i Clear with Yaxi pads, which is like less than $50 USD total. Super comfortable and sound great, especially on vocals. Not the deepest subbass extension but the midbass sounds awesome and the treble is very airy. Haven't found a genre that sound bad with them.

Physically speaking, you are correct with needing the airspace in your headphones. Same way an open stage allows for the best technical audio quality, headphones provide a much easier problem to tackle, meaning better quality and a cheaper price point.

Got the K240s because of Anthony and I do not regret it. They’re great and when you tune the bass properly, low ends sound full. Also the replaceable wire is a plus. The K240s are awesome.

I seriously cannot recommend the AKG k240s enough. They are an amazing pair of studio headphones that are really comfortable for a *very* reasonable price. And replacement cords are pretty cheap when klutzes like me inevitably snap the 3.5mm jack.

Still using my K240s also, 5 years strong with everyday use. With less and less ways available to demo speakers and headphones, buying those AKGs were a real crapshoot after breaking a vintage pair of Sony MDR-7506s (brittle plastic after trying to replace the earcups, oops) and ultimately being disappointed with the Audio Technica M50x for everyday listening and comfort. But I'm very glad I pulled the trigger because the K240s are toasty warm and live at my desk for music, movies, games and Discord with their semi-open airiness.

I've used a pair of K702s and they've been incredibly level and clear and precise. Solid, light, I'd forget they were there, my ears wouldn't get warm. I didn't have an issue with the XLR cable. Only recently have I had an issue with audio not coming through both channels but that's likely due to how bashable they are. Their light weight just lends them to carelessness. It takes less than a mild tug for the set to come off my desk and fly across the room. I suppose that's my own issue. Other than how aerodynamic they are, AKG K702s are an amazing pair of phones.

melon, if you're talking versatility and minimum compromise, the audio-technica M50X are the pair to beat! they've had a golden reputation for nearly two decades manifested as their predecessors, the M50's and in their current form as the updated M50X. they've got great ergonomics, are pretty damn portable, have a great over-ear seal, SUPERB sound, somehow both great and accurate for monitoring and still packing a subtle little punch in the lower and higher frequencies for easier listening. they're under $160 now, and their popularity is so widespread to the point that dbrand literally makes skins for them. i'm surprised you haven't brought them up or mentioned them as of yet. if somehow you haven't heard of them i hope this points you in their direction. P.S. i own a pair of K240's and the DT770's too but i'd still happily pick the M50X's over either of them any day, your mileage may vary but there's definitely merit to their insane popularity!

I recently got a pair of Grado SR80X. Open back on ear headphones hand made in New York. They're very revealing with the top end and mids while having subtle bass. I have a pair of AKG K240 as well. While I love them, my Grados picked up on details that my AKGs didn't. Highly recommend Grado.

Hell yes, still rocking the Portapros, and this time around the rythym beige portapros, like I (throwback to the Koss Pro4AA, the headphone that my profile pic features) You can never go wrong with them. They work well with pretty much every genre and have that glorious warranty. And never break the bank. I've have many headphones but the portapros are my absolute favorite, been so for over a decade. Are they the best I own? Not by a long shot. But are always my go-to. I just love the signature. I'd recommend getting red/blue pads from a Japanese company called Yaxi. The comfort not only was improved VASTLY improved, but the bass was toned down a bit and the soundstage improved (more separation, less veiled). Making them near-perfect.

I actually use a pair of gaming headphones that I bought for $80. Steelseries Arctis 3's to be specific. They work really well for movies, shows, gaming (obviously) and music. They also have a program where you can customise your sound a tun, which is just great. They are really, really comfortable aswell. Can highly recommened for someone who listens to music!

I'm surprised the akg 702 let you down. I have the Q701 (largely the same) and they’re my favorite reference headphones. My favorite more "conventional" headphones are by v-moda. As long as you don't have them on too long (they're tight) they're a great pair of headphones that doesn't lack audio quality. It ups the bass a tad but I don't find it muddy at all. Love those things.

Porta-Pros are amazing sound wise for what they are, but god forbid those wires break; you can easily repair a lot of basic non-BT headphones but the casing on Porta-Pros are pretty much glued shut not to mention those wires are almost too small to solder back together.

I had a pair of Over ear noise cancelling Monster Inspirations which were really comfy and had great sound and noise cancelling, but they were corded only and didn't have any bass scaling. Last year I got a pair of over ear Sony bluetooth MDR XB950N1s and they are amazingly comfy, have great sound, and have amazing bass scaling and other settings. I'd highly recommend bot, but I definitely prefer the Sony headphones, because they not only sound great, but are much more customizable and have bluetooth as an option

The Koss Porta Pro are legendary. For that price, you get the best sound possible. It sounds like one of those 80s soundsystems. Warm sound and very base driven, but not overdriven like too many other headphones.

When it comes to Bluetooth headphones the Codec avalable is what matters the most. iPhones do not support many of them, but if you are on a newer Android device, a Mac, or a PC with the right Bluetooth module you can take advantage of some great sounding headphones.

I used the same AKG K240's for forever and they were extremely uncomfortable, but that might just be because I have long ears. If you have the extra $$$ try to grab the K7XX's off mass drop, they sound way better and are much more comfortable since they have memory foam cups instead of leather. They're on par with my sennheiser HD650's as well and are half the price but with less construction quality.
