My Health Scare is Over, Now I'm Back to BJJ Training

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I had an issue where I had to take some time off BJJ and had to go to the Emergency room because of that health issue.
Well, today was my very first training session back in about a month and I could feel it. If you're older and do BJJ you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.
As you age in BJJ you can really tell the difference that a long break makes. I'm not "old" in the sense of full life. But I am for BJJ. That being said, in my mid 30s I definitely don't recover the same as I did when I was 25.
Anyways, I wanted to share a couple ideas with you guys in relation to getting back to training BJJ after a serious injury, health issue, or whatever else took you off the mat.
Hopefully you find these ideas useful to you.

this kind of topic should be talked about in every martial arts gym, specially by the coaches. Sometimes coaches just teach techniques.

I started Jiu-Jitsu again at 37 and almost immediately ended up with shoulder pain in elbow pain and took a month off. Fast forward to when I get back on the mat and within a week of training I get a bruised rib. I'm about to go back in again and praying I don't mess myself up AGAIN.

I turn 52 this year. I'm purple. This my 3rd week back after 6 months off---- due to life demands. I'm an old stud but dropping T levels and there's no compensating. I started back in the fundamentals class. On week 4 I'll hit the advanced classes. At this age, it was a very likely probability that I 'd just hang it up. My game was never the best, but after 6 months- everything is stale. Fundamentals is never bad at any place in your journey.

This is almost exactly me but I’m a blue belt. Definitely taking it slow before going to the advanced class.

Glad you're back. The mental-physical disconnect is real. When folks started pouring back into classes after COVID stuff died down, every gym I'm at saw a HUGE uptick in injuries. People were coming back from a year+ off and trying to jump right back into where they were, and the vast majority of them did not keep their diets or activity levels in any sort of check. Really important to help people mitigate that risk when they're coming back from a layoff.

Lol this video came a little late for me but I can relate. Had to take 4 months off and went back first time yesterday. And I definitely felt like I neglected cardio training way too much during my break. But I feel its gonna come back like it did the first time. Just keep on keeping on! :)

I had to take nearly two months off for work. I used to be in peak physical conditioning, I was a competitor. Fast forward to two months later, I've eaten junk food nearly everyday, barely slept and put on around 10lbs or more. As you can imagine, the mental/physical disconnect hit hard. I never, ever took rounds off, in fact I used to ask for more rounds and stay until later to roll. The only thing I kept was strength training at least twice a week, but I wasn't as explosive and I didn't get much out of my training sessions since I was already tired and ate like crap. I did the taking every other round off , as you mentioned, intuitively. I looked for newer (but not brand new) people to roll. Upside to this whole situation: I couldn't rely so much on my endurance and explosiveness to get into and out of position, so my technique got significantly better and others noticed too, so not all is lost. It's been two weeks of consistent training and cleaning out my diet and I'm slowly but surely regaining by endurance back, taking less rounds off, feeling better with each day and have some sharper technique now.

I was gym training with a bust rib for 2/3 weeks. Not healing. Need to have a bit more humility and take time off gym. Training at home is still viable in the mean time. On a side note at 40+ I am finding that supporting gym/club sessions by Stretching before and after class helps me to retain my longevity. It is possible. 🙏 Hope you are well dude

Random question. I have fungus in all of my toes and find this to be a reason not to start jiu jitsu, but really want to learn. I’ve done the creams and whatnot (except medication, but no thank you), no progress. Should I say fuck it and start anyway? Maybe paint my nails?

I’m a 42 year old blue belt. I suffered a torn calf muscle recently and took a month off to heal. This is my second week back training and my conditioning and cardio were so bad after that break. I was gassed after one round where as before I can go 3 rounds at least. Freaking crazy.

Yep. Tore my meniscus and took a month and a half, the room was spinning after my first round or two back. Had to go to the toilet and have a sneaky vomit. That time off does damage lol

Nothing to do with the video but today at jujitsu a blue belt held me in North South while he grinded his pelvis bone into my temple but then. Telling me not to tap to pressure/position position and when I explained that I was in pain and that is why I tapped and that's also why. I didn't tap when he had his belly on my head in North South. And not his. Pelvis grinding into my temple? Then he said just don't tap to pressure I don't understand can you help me
@Gorillaspoons

Also I tried to explain that I couldn't get out of the position and instead of explaining how I could have tried to get out of the position he. Just told me not to tap To pressure
@Gorillaspoons

Also he added. You shouldn't tap to pain either which I also didn't understand because up until this point. I've been told always to tap when you feel pain by every other student including higher belt.

Get used to being uncomfortable. Tap before a nap but you should be able to handle pain as long as no limbs are in danger of snapping. He’s giving good advice not to give up just cos your mind tells you to. I’ve done 3 years japanese Jiujitsu , now starting BJJ , the pain and discomfort is the same embrace your warrior mindset good luck believe in yourself! 😊
