What is a Good Mindset for BJJ Competitions ?

Having a good mindset for BJJ competitions is tough. Competitions kick up the anxiety and the nerves like almost nothing else does. Not to mention we're all a little different.
When I was younger and newer to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu I would compete and I always felt like i underperformed. I would watch my matches and in most cases I felt like I was better than what I displayed on the mat.
As I'll share in the video. Many times I was too concerned with everything else, other than how I planned to win. I would be afraid of letting people down, afraid of the other Brazilian Jiujitsu competitors and just focused on all the wrong things. When I would compete with this mindset I would be so nervous to pull the trigger and go for my techniques.
So what is a good mindset for BJJ competitions or what's the best mindset for BJJ competitions?
Again, we are all a little different so the idea of "best" is different for everyone in Brazilian Jiu jitsu.
But in this video I share what mindset has worked best for me and helped me reach more success as a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belt than I experienced at any other belt. The mindset involves focusing more on yourself, your abilities and how you plan to win.
This has helped me reach a much more focused and efficient state of mind when it comes to competing in BJJ.
Thanks again to Max for the question. I hope this video helps brother!

Thanks. I'm on the upper end of the experience spectrum for the beginner division. I roll pretty even with teammates who've been doing it for 2 years so I'm feeling really confident about the 0-6 months division.

Horrible the first match. Was told it was an hour ahead of schedule but it ended up being a half hour late. After that I settled in and just focused on executing techniques and it went really well. Thanks!

Random thought: watching Chewie's videos feels a bit like watching the old Elliott Hulse's videos back in 2013. Getting that out of the way, thanks for your ideas and perspective! Love your channel and listening to you speak about jiu jitsu. :)

Chewjitsu Wow, thanks for asking, I took home silver in Gi and No Gi. The guy I lost gold to in Gi had ten years of Judo experience and destroyed me, how he was registered as a novice I do not know. There is a judo guy in my gym so I immediately recognized by his stance and his grips what I was up against. I tried to pull guard and failed, he got side control and tapped me to a bow and arrow. In no Gi I took second because the guy who beat me forfeited due to injury, his knee got hurt in his bout, otherwise I would have taken bronze. I'm a super heavy weight and at 245 I was the skinny guy, LOL. 3 from my school competed, we took home 4 silvers and a gold. I'll be posting videos of the matches to my channel in the coming days if you care to watch feel free to subscribe. God bless brother, thanks for your encouragement!!!

Update : judges didn't let me fight because of 0.6kg more weight, i was so so disapointed, but that's just the start of my story, i actually blame nobody but my coaches, they never told me how stricte judges can be in terms of weights, but i learned the lesson, nobody will do things for you unless you do it yourself. And i'm ready to compete on higher level after seeing yesterday's event.

Had that tournament I mentioned a week ago and was fairly content with my mindset. I am still trying to figure out what exactly my style should be, but I'm trying to force my opponent to do a technique exactly right and defend if he does not and I want to be very active and take initiative all the time. For my next tournament I want to focus on pressure on top and steady progression from dominant positions to submissions. Nerves are getting better very quickly btw. I'll let you know how my upcoming matches go.

You're body will figure out your style. In the beginning it's hard to really nail down your exact style. And the nerves getting the better of you is pretty normal brother. Don't let it both you too much. I look forward to hearing about your future success. Just keep training hard grinding away!

Got my blue belt a year and a half ago, training 3-4x a week and I feel very strong in any gym I go to against other blue belts and even purple and brown belts at times. I competed 4x last year and I can’t help but I have incredible performance anxiety when I compete, I drop in skill and it’s like I don’t know anything that I’m doing as opposed to in training. Just doing some research right now to try to figure out how to fix this. My only solution that I’ve come up with is to train more and compete more often until I’m comfortable, but I don’t know even the last competition I went to I got smashed so bad and I think it’s because I approached it too relaxed to try to mitigate the anxiety.
