My Hero Academia Has Gone Downhill...

As someone that's been with My Hero Academia manga since the first chapter came out in July 2014 in Weekly Shonen Jump. Its sad to admit how far the series has fallen. Its no longer the shining gem it once was and has gone downhill in the worst ways possible. Fake out deaths is one of the worst things in writing stories. It only serves to create fake tension and nothing more.

For the record this is the 4th time a deadly stomach/torso wound that should've killed them didn't kill them. The ONLY time a wound like this actually killed someone was Nighteye. All Might, Best Jeanist, Gran Torino and now Katsuki all lived through it. This is Hori's take on Kubo's arm cutting at this point. A injury that just keeps popping up. But you can't say a patten wasn't established way before this or Gran Torino.

Do you think this is going to be satisfying that these villains are just going to get cuffs slapped on their wrist after the horrific stuff they’ve done? I think they’ve earned their death sentences. It’s one thing if you run into a petty villain robbing someone. There’s no need to execute them since it’s a petty crime. But the stuff the LOV has done? Nah. Hell, even Grand Torino and All Might have said that you can’t save everyone. That giving them death is another way of granting them mercy. It pisses me off that Horikoshi tries so hard to make the reader sympathize with villains which he doesn’t. You can’t sympathize with someone who murders for fun and gets pleasure off of it.

Yet, the heroes continue to act as if they can somehow save the villains. That they somehow can bring them to justice. Even though it should’ve been abundantly clear that the only way to stop them is to not hold back and kill as well. The whole first war arc, the villains outright won. They demolished the heroes like they were mere fodder.

Killing off a side character and then being like "its just a prank" would be one thing, but this is so much worse in my opinion because Bakugo has been around since the beginning. So seeing that character you've known about for so long and seeing them die only to realize that their death was just some extremely cheap attempt at emotional manipulation, really stings.

This death could have been one of the most hard hitting moments in recent shonen. A dose of the reality of having child combatants on the frontline of a war. It's consequences could have echoed into the rest of the series and gave it more weight. Now it's just going to be looked back as one of the quickest gotchas. I'm disappointed but strangely not surprised the easy way was taken.

This is a shonen, which means it targeted mainly to boys around 15 years old. That thing you are describing is a little deeper and more reflexive. It involves thinking. Kids just wanna see fights and get satisfied with the outcome. A hype fight scene with a Mid to worse story is enough for the kids to buy 200 millions copies of a manga. The "reality" aspect of "Kids in the battlefield" could be explored literally years ago in every possibility chance they had throughout the series so far, but they didn't do it because the series, as well as the shonen genre, is not made to make you think and have a reflexive impact on people's minds, its made to sell, and its sells a lot. No matter how much shit ppl give MHA after this chapter, these same ppl with still buy the next volume or read the next chapter and thus, support and encourage that kind of writing decision and more events like this in the future.The blame of this so called "falldown" of MHA and other shonen series is mainly because of the "fans"themselves. The fans are really to blame, since they keep consuming and telling the market: "give us more cheap shallow tropes that will satisfy my cravings" even after complaining of the same said tropes and attitudes. So it doesn't really matter for the publisher if people are giving shit to Horikoshi, in their minds this chapter was a success, because, as said, shonen is made to sell. And people will keep on buying and buying and buying.

You said it yourself, sticking to tropes with no spin on them don't allow for introspection through thinking and create mid or worse stories. I do think teens are perfectly able to reason and benefit from more smart stories. I'm not raging. I don't believe there's anything wrong with saying that a piece of art isn't all it could be. I understand the business aspect of just meeting a margin. There's no arguing about that reality. But the way media evolves is by being innovative and deviate from set standards. Which will make the market will evolve with it after being exposed to new ways to produce art.

I checked out of MHA awhile ago because it just feels like too much is going on. The characters are dealing with too much for first-year students. The situation is too serious to be left in the hands of a bunch of 15/16 year olds and I've long grown tired of literal children saving the world. I don't feel the story is justified to be in the position that it's in right now.

Which is really weird considering how the three-year high school term is a pretty solid timeline for charting growth and having meaningful events spread out, with the final villain war being like the last trial before graduation. But now everything's all crammed into the first year which makes the story feel bloated and rushed.

Imagine if at the start od 2nd year Star and Stripe arrived to Japan because of news of AllMight retiring. Izuku could have intership under her. Learn from her. By this time we would care about her(Make her rules quirk less op, as well as make Shigaraki less op). War arc should have be the end of 2nd year with Izuku quitting the school and spending much more time outside of it learning about villains what drives them, trying to understand them but the the same time learns that sometimes he doesnt have a choice. Imagine of All for One actually left his legacy for Shigaraki we would have this amazing dynamic of " YOU ARE NEXT" that wa so hyped up. Something really went wrong with Horikoshi and rushing the story but My Hero Academia could be so much more. Imagine if we got impactful Star and Stripe vs Shigaraki fight that she would actually make him weaker (He somehow become fuckin stronger after Order deleted some quirks lmao).

I like that fans immediately turn against Hori because he did not kill Bakugo, but if you read the spoiler it is a life for a life, meaning Edgeshot is going to die. Fan: "But.... he is not a main character so he is ok to die" Me:"Well if we look at that way, Twice was also not a main character so it is ok for him to die" The reason I am happy Bakugo is coming back is because he "died" without really doing anything to Shiggy, making his supposed death meaningless. Twice needed to die because if he did not, Hori could not plausible justify the villains not curvestomping the heroes in the previous war. Bakugo's death would be an insult to all the character development he did, especially when against Shiggy he did at the moment absolutely nothing. If he died while permanently crippling Shiggy I would accept his death, but that did not happen so I am glad he will come back for a price.

He should do his best to save that child, but such a powerful technique shouldn't be used so frivolously. What was he even hoping to gain by bringing Bakugo back? He's clearly not powerful enough to make a difference in this fight, despite the manga trying its darnest to make him seem like he is. And there isn't enough emotional investment in Edgeshot as a character, so it's a pointless sacrifice for a shining moment of heroism that doesn't feel earned from a narrative standpoint.

I wouldn’t have cared had they literally not shown Bakugo chest burst open. An inner monologue about catching up to Izuku, etc. they threw all that out within 5 chapters. It had to be written better. He’s badly beaten up, needs medical attention, etc. bounces back or something. To have an entirely new heart transplanted with the death of another hero, that’s some grade A ass pull.

@@blueflameSM True, the fakeout for a longtime MC, the way it happened, the extremely brief duration of his "death" and the contrived manner in which they're bringing him back all exacerbate what is already a bad writing mistake. Good fake-outs are difficult to do and can have a really negative impact if done poorly, so it was a bad decision to begin with.

So something else that annoying me with this. So edge shot displays an ability never before hinted from his Quirk where he can just transform into a fully functioning heart . Ontop of that he has no interactions with any character in the cast that would justify him taking himself out to save Bakugo WHEN THEY NEED ABLE BODIED people to fight. His Quirk allows him to control fiber, while most people think it is only limited to clothes, in theory it could also allow him to control muscles. Muscles are just a bunch of fibers put together. If it was shown that Best Jeanist could control muscles, this could have been so much better. It makes alot more sense for him to sacrifice his body to make Bakugo a new heart.

This could have been a phenomenal moment for Izuku, who up to this point has been going into this planning to 'save' Shigaraki. Imagine if he arrived to the battlefield and saw everyone dead. Every single person that was part of the fight, save for like Mirio who has been desperately trying to keep him occupied. Izuku thinks back to his promise to try saving Shiggy; he thinks back to him getting caught off guard and letting Toga pull him away and all the time he wasted having to travel to the arena. He thinks about every regret he might have, leading up to this moment, and he sees red. One for All explodes with power, every quirk, including the second's activated at once and amped up to 100%, and the final panel of that chapter is his tearstricken face, pupils gone as he goes mad with rage and tells Shiggy that he's going to kill him. From there, the next few chapters are him completely taking Shigaraki apart with no mercy or finesse at all. It isn't even a fight; the roles have reversed, going from Shigaraki as the unstoppable big bad to Izuku on his super villain juice, just brutalizing Shigaraki with no remorse. However, he's also destroying his own body by fighting so recklessly, and the other OFA holders are trying to get through to him, trying to pierce the fog on his mind to remind him of the stakes and that he needs to cool his head in order to protect everyone, to no avail. Then, just as Izuku begins to slow down vs Shiggy's regeneration and his body starts to fail him, All Might's impression speaks to him, the boy's mentor using his remnant connection to OFA to be there for his student when he's needed most. As a result, Izuku finally regains his cool and is able to strategize, using the quirks available to him to finally start putting Shigaraki down for good.

I legit don't understand why people put up with MHA for so long. Like I understand that the Art Style is fresh and cool but the plot has been generic af since day one, the characters are so bland that the only thing saving them from being even worse are just their quirks. I fully expected Bakugo to get brought back somehow, but I thought it'd at least be something more in line with what Horikoshi has set up in the lore. For instance, it having something to do with Eri....or bringing back Chisaki into the story. Either of them could do it and it could easily be written in to further the plot. Hell getting a cool battle between Chisaki and AFO would make for some great scenes....no need to redeem him, just play off him wanting revenge or something. But this entire final arc has felt rushed to me. Characters like Stars getting inserted, then killed quickly. The whole villain global revolution getting skimmed over. Toga's character development being dropped for the plot. Its left me wondering how much of this is Horikoshi and how much is other factors rushing the end? I say this because this final arc has been reminding me of Bleach's end. Specifically with all the skipped, rushed or BS plot contrivances being made to just keep it moving quickly.....you see the seeds of a great arc, but its ruined by the rush. In Bleach's case it was of Kubo's health, but here....what's the reasoning? (Edited to remove blaming Jump since that was old rumors and presently just conjecture)

My Hero's downfall is what was once its greatest strength. It's enormous cast of characters. It made the world feel alive, but the problem is that there's too many characters. The cast is so big that there are far too many plot points to write out in full, and give a satisfying conclusion at once, which has led to the series feeling both rushed, and dragged on at the exact same time. On one hand, everything is being rushed to the ending, while on the other hand, the series has been going for almost a decade now, so I'm sick of waiting for the answers. If we get the resolutions that we are already impatient for, it won't be satisfying, because it was rushed. If we continue to wait for several more years for it to actually reach a satisfying conclusion, it still won't be satisfying because the story would've become boring due to it taking way too long to reach its resolutions. Either way, I still drop the series in the end.

My Hero is a series that we will look back on in hindsight and everything we loved about it in the start will be why we're disappointed in the end because of poor execution. The big cast, the traitor mystery, the character developments, the wide array of plot points in general. Horikoshi isn't sticking the landing with much of any of them and idk where the blame for this starts but I feel like heroes rising is a part of the problem. That was his original ending and we don't know how much he had to change after giving that up to that movie. Overall I'm just really disappointed that yet another ending for a story I liked is turning out to be mid.

This series went to downhill after the LOV arc. Horikoshi made villains overpowered, then tried to make them seem “sympathetic” and “justified”, and the god awful first 1 war arc. When was the last time the villains suffered a big loss like Twice? More heroes have died at the hands of AFO than the villains have at the hands at the supposed ‘top heroes of the country’. Not mention the awful fight between ‘USA Strongest Hero’ to be absolutely bodied. He introduces side characters, hypes them up for a couple of chapters, and kills them off. Established villains or heroes? Nothing but fake out deaths. Imagine if Horikoshi actually killing off more popular villains like Dabi and Toga. You know, something that should’ve happened but nope. Not to mention when we finally got Izuku being serious and finally giving us what we wanted to see.. he went back to normal after what? 12-13 chapters? Absolute joke. This series had so much promise and it all went to shit.

I’m nearly finished season 5, and the thing that’s killing me atm is the never-ending orgy of flashbacks. Like seriously, I wish I had a dollar for every sob story exposited mid fight. Once you notice it you can’t stop seeing it. 90% of the set-ups and payoffs happen in the same same episode, if not the _same scene_ , and it’s always done via flashback. It’s always the same formula, which makes the show predictable and lazy and boring.

Aight it's really bugging me how people are dissing Bakugo's return. Guys it's still a good story. And saying that no one else major has died is a lie (i.e. Midnight and Twice). Sure, it's not the major-major characters, but either way I'm willing to bet that y'all would call it a "last ditch death" just to make the story interesting. This is a mere part of a bigger story yet to come so I suggest that you doubters shut up and read the story. If it's "so awfully wrong," a "cheap fake out death," and the "worst thing a writer could do" I say you stop reading the story and go find some garbage you can trash. Talk when you're a writer going through, writing, and delivering the same things Hori's doing. Otherwise- and I'll say it again for the people who's egos are louder than their rationale- go find some garbage to trash. Hori, thank you for this story. and tbh its not hori's fault It wouldn't shock me if he had all these great plans for the manga, but had to cut a lot of them for time and this is a result. Look at the difference between reactions between him regularly pretending to kill of characters as opposed to Power just getting DESTROYED in Chainsaw Man. I get not wanting to make fangirls mad, but also, fuck the fangirls, people come to these stories for THE OVERALL STORIES. I agree been reading it since august of 2014 and it was so good and had such a unique storyline but I feel like it’s just been goin down. The leaks had basically set it in stone for me that it’s gone shit. Imma still read and keep up with it but it won’t be held as high as I first saw it. I really wanted bakugo to stay dead just cuz I felt like it showed how much balls he had to do it but the fact he’s being brought back really makes the whole thing null and void instead it just makes any chance of anything of a message or make a good fight or sum.

For me, it undermines the threat of the main conflict. I just like a bit of consequences in my storytelling. Just because you’re a beloved “main” character doesn’t mean you’re safe. You have “underdog” heroes fighting against impossible villains in these impossible circumstances. Underdog means you’re theoretically screwed. Obviously the heroes are gonna win and save the day and blah blah blah but if you’re gonna go hard, go hard. Don’t puss out. Chainsaw Man went hard and stayed hard.

It’s weird that people wanted Bakugo to die here so Izuku could have some motivation but that is so obviously a disservice to Bakugo as a character that it honestly would have been worse had it actually happened. It’s weird how fans of this series want it to not be shonen to the point that they’ll shit on it when it is but then get pissed when it doesn’t follow the usual shonen formula for other things, like training arcs.

It seems like Horikoshi sensei himself is fed up with his own work and wants to end it as soon as possible. And in doing so, he's just throwing things around just for the sake of it. I'm really concerned about how as of the last few years so many long running SJ titles get super rushed and out of character towards the end, with convenient cliches abounding. The authors are usually so unique and varied in their storytelling that when they all have this negative trait in common it seems like there is a higher up entity forcing them to do this. The way MHA is going reminds me most of the final arc of Promised Neverland but even series like Bleach went through this. I'm concerned that even Oda is showing some of the early worrying signs as he gets into the final saga of One Piece

You cant tell me they built this giant robot just to stand there and look intimidating and the whole point of these robots and the facility was just for the evaluation. Unless stated otherwise (which didnt happen). Furthermore the author wrote themselves into a corner by creating an impossible test for Deku. Since he cant control his strength that means he can only attack 4 times at max and that would be assuming he can hop over to the next robot and somehow destroy it while standing on one leg. Which would get him very little points regardless. Also the others were taking out robots left and right while Deku would have to run (without using his power) up to a robot and attack it before anyone else did, good luck with that.

This is why I don’t like today’s generation when it comes to people being so sensitive on killing characters. Jiraya’s my favorite character because Kishimoto killed him off. Because sacrifices were made. But lately I’ve been seeing so many people against killing off characters because they are too attached to them and it’s really affecting real storytelling. Characters that you love, need to die if the story is meant for them to die. If we keep bringing back characters or saving them at the last minute you are actually ruining your storytelling. Another good reason why I can’t love One Piece as much as others. Oda literally kills off characters by putting them in impossible situations to escape from. Just for them to make an appearance that they are OK. After so many fake deaths and the straw hats surviving literally everything I just stopped caring and not being concerned by anyone anymore. Because I know they will be OK. Recently with Stranger Things season 4. Max kept being saved 3 times to the point I just stop caring about her as a person.

Jiraya death is great because serves another purpose than just stakes are high it was just a conclusion of his arc with was beautiful because we spend some chapters on jiraya pov and backstory and purpose.
