Hi Nigel, I thought the spring in my area is late, but your video teach me otherwise. I'm happy your trees survived. We have cold winters, too. With temperatures down to -30°Celcius. I store my trees in the garage at a big window. But this winter was very mild. We only had one week with -15°C. The rest wasn't really cold at all. So my trees are already budding out. As I see you finally have a knobcutter from Ryuga. Great tool! Always keep it clean, dry and oiled! ;) Have fun watching the greeb come back. Spring is awesome.

Im Just starting out in Bonsai. and im looking for some good tips to get my started. Should i use Propper bonsai soil? or can i use any ordinary soil/compost. I have a 3 tiny saplings that are not more than 5 inches high and not even 1cm thick. Ive had them for almost half a year now. 2 of them are Oak trees and the other is either a Rowan tree or just an Ash tree. im not sure. its in the family of Ash though. They are taking a while to grow and im thinking of getting a few bigger trees in the meantime to keep me occupied whilst my Seedlings grow. I also have some Reedwood seeds germinating and a few Sycamore seeds aswell. I have many trees to start with but i need to know if i should Get the propper soil or if i can just use the Compost/potting soil ive been using. your videos got me into this hobby well. im not into it yet. but i found this Rowan tree in the pathway next to my house. my grandfather had recently passed and he had always told me about these trees. "never cut them down" and how you should take care of them because it is a Sacred tree to my family or somthing and i dont want it to be injured by the Compost ive been using i am hoping to grow it into a beautiful bonsai that i can pass down my family in the years to come. anyway thanks for these videos Nigel you have been a great influence on me. Thank you very much ;)
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
If you use bonsai soil, the trees will develop a better finer root system and the roots will be healthier too! The roots like the air spaces in bonsai soil and the soil drains really well, so it is hard to over water your trees. More water means more fertilizer and oxygen in the soil, so your trees will grow much better than in garden soil. Bonsai soil will dry out a little more quickly as the roots will be evenly spread out in the soil, so you have to be a little more careful not to let the soil dry out. Here is a video on watering and fertilizing bonsai soil.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYmseqOuitarmrs

It is best to very carefully separate the tree from the soil rocks and the pot and replace the soil with a good bonsai soil. You can then water from above instead of soaking the entire pot in water.

Hi Nigel. I need your help. I was given a white cedar bonsai. Well three together in a pot. They’re beautiful rooted between cracks of rock however they are very tall, thin and 100% vertical. No branches on the lower half of the trees. There’s no thickness anywhere. How can I encourage thicker growth and not risk what work was done? I can’t find much for information.
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
The tree will require growth to thicken the trunk and branches up. Reducing the height of the tree will also make the trunk look thicker. You can slowly reduce the height of the tree, taking it back to a lower shoot each year. If you grow the tree, you can also prune the tree back once a year to keep it compact. I would just shape it like a hedge and profile prune it until the trunk grows to the desired thickness. Bonsai can look really good with skinny trunks, it gives the impression of a tall tree growing in a dense forest. It might be worth considering this tall elegant style for your tree also. The work can go into making small well shaped branches.

Have you had any problems with leaf and internode reduction on your Norway Maple? The reason I ask is that I found this volunteer maple in my backyard, which has been hacked off by my landlord every spring for years, so it has an interesting trunk. I dug it up and potted it a few weeks ago, and now it has some growth. Today I finally identified it as a Norway Maple, and was disappointed to discover that these trees are not generally considered suitable for bonsai because of their large leaves and long internodes. The fact that you have one is encouraging - do you have any tips or advice for me?

Hi Nigel have you ever taken the temperature inside your green house and then outside the green house in the winter? I ask because I’m looking to get a greenhouse and I’m wondering if that will be enough protection from the cold. I live in zone 6a. I was told not to let Japanese maples go below 18f degrees. I’m just trying to figure out if the greenhouse will be enough protection during the winter. Trying to prepare early lol. Thank you I love the videos.
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
I think you would need a heater inside the greenhouse, it offers protection from the wind but not the temperatures. When it is -24 C outside and cloudy, it's the same temperature inside the greenhouse. If you had the trees in the ground inside the greenhouse, with lots of mulch around them, they would be much better off than outside or in a shed. I think it would keep your maples alive. You would have to watch out for mice with the trees at ground level.

@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
No, you need to keep the buds on the cutting, you can remove 1/2 to 2/3 of the leaves to help the cutting retain moisture. It is best to place the cuttings in a mini greenhouse and give them bright light. You can make a small greenhouse with a clear plastic bag with some air holes in it. Wrap it around the cutting and the pot and the extra warmth and humidity will help the cutting root.

Hi Nigel. I am really desperate for some advise, please. I have had my own little bonsai that I have grown from a seedling. It’s about 5 years old now, and it had just started growing bark. Well I repotted it, and to do so I had to trim his roots. I pruned them back so they would fit in a radial pattern in his newer pot (its bigger, but this was the first repotting). I also cut a big root at the very bottom of the tree. Since then ALL of his leaves fell off! He had a lot of nice little green leaves, and they are all gone. I keep watering him, but everyone says he’s dead. His twigs are springy still - they usually turn brittle when they die. Should I keep watering him? Is there anything I can do to help save him?

I would place a clear plastic bag around the tree and pot to hold in the humidity. Be sure to poke some air holes in the bag and keep it out of intense sunlight. Too much sun could raise the temperature too high inside the bag. The tree will need as much light as possible, but just be careful of the inside temperature! Mist the tree regularly a couple of times a day and hopefully your tree will slowly bounce back. The closer you can keep the tree in greenhouse like conditions the better your chances for recover!
