Dear Nigel, I have the same drill and I will be visiting Wellesley Is, N.Y in about a month. I have been going there to the Thousand Islands since a babe and have the last three generations that have also done so. There in those Islands are a large amount of such beautiful cedars and junipers that are centuries old. They live on rock and river water through heat, ice, wind, and rain. I may just grab a pure sample of such specimens as yamadori. I thoroughly enjoy your videos, design, artistry, and insight. I’ve just started my bonsai journey a mere week ago but have learned many things from you thus far. Cheers, Daniel

Sadly my cedar tree died after I repotted. I did not do any foliage pruning, because I didn't want to do too much work to it at once. I used 1:1:1 DE/Lava/Pumice. I am not sure what I did wrong. I didn't do much root pruning, but did wash them out like you did. Might you have any suggestions of what I might have done wrong? I was reading that cedar needs mycorrhiza in the soil. I fear bare rooting and new soil would remove the mycorrhiza. After watching this, you did the same, except you did foliage pruning as well. Is that where I went wrong perhaps? Thanks.

Hi nigel i do have a question..i noticed that in some of my pots especially in a polystyren training pot for my hornbeam bonsai,there are some little coloured balls,i am not sure but I think they are working with the mychorize system...what do you think?(the tree is very healthy and it is a yamadori,so i don't think that it is a problem)
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 6 жыл бұрын
It is possible that they are root nematodes.... here is an article aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/galveston/weekly_Q&A/h&v_6.htm They could also be fertilizer balls mixed in with the soil.

@BrokenZen311
@BrokenZen311 6 жыл бұрын
Potting soil holds on to too much moisture, and can become compacted. Too much moisture can cause root rot, and compacted soil will limit oxygen availability for the roots. Both can be fatal.

Hi Nigel, thanks for this amazingly beautiful video.Beginning is so peaceful..knowing about an old tree is like knowing an old sage. You styled your tree very well. Love your videos. I have a cider tree in a pot, almost 20 years old n 8 feet of height.Earlier I didn't think of it n let it grow. Now I have been thinking of styling it as a bonsai for many years but my heart refuses to chop it! Now suggest me if I can make a large bonsai or can I air layer it or can I grow the chopped stem in rains? I am not sure whether I'm asking sensible questions!!Still expect answers. Thanks n Regards

I’m just beginning my Bonsai journey in earnest- Could someone please share his “usual” Bonsai soil mix components / ratio I have half a dozen trees I’ve been growing for 3~4 years in their nursery pots and I’m ready to do my first repotting just like for this little spirit tree project. I’d like to “make my own” soil and have it on hand - Any advice / soil recommendations etc are most welcome Also, I’m in the market for very good quality tools that I can grow into- I only want carbon steel though. Thank you in advance! 🙇🏻

It is difficult to keep a sick tree alive, all you can do is give it good care and keep it in a bright spot, away from the direct afternoon sun. Misting the foliage can help also.

Hi nigel, im writing to you cause im begging for your advice, long story short, I have a ficus retusa that I placed inside an aquarium to get some aerial roots and this is going pretty well. Already have 5 or 6 roots connect to the ground. But now I have a problem, the soil of my bonsai is really really wet cause of the high humidity and im now concerned that my roots could get rotten with the time, I think I should get some bonsai soil, my soil is regulare repoting soil ( provably not the best for bonsai). What do you think of my situation? Sorry for my english, im a french canadian. Nice video as always by the way.

Hi Nigel. I don‘t think there is a chance the inverse taper will disappear growing in this small pot, at all. Honestly. Put the tree in the Garden and let it grow. Maybe sometime It will become a good Bonsai candidate.

I think in this case the inverse taper actually adds to the character of the tree and is fine.
