This video touched a nerve. I hope my story can serve as HOPE for you. Roughly in 1983 I became homeless after both my parents died. Father in high school in 1978 and mother in 1982. Another factor was a hard Drug habit (heroin) that started in 1972. I lived with my dog in an abandoned house in Ronkonkoma NY and my neighbor gave me an electrical cord hook-up because they felt sorry for me and I used to do work for them (which they never really needed). I showered (or bathed) at the local lake in the summers and every few days at a YMCA that I bought a $5 day day pass in the winters. I siphoned fuel oil from the laundromat underground tank when I did my laundry through a hole in my uninsured-unregistered car in the trunk to get fuel for my heater. I stole the expired yogurts and milk from the back of the supermarkets they would return and stole the crushed aluminum cans on he loading dock that came out of the recycle machines and sell them at the scrap yard. I realized my situation could go 2 ways, death or slavery to the government system or sobriety with freedom. I opted for the second. It was hard but I placed myself in a 21 day detox program and then eventually got on a long term program. The thing was, I set a end date goal for myself to get off and be independent. I constantly reduced my methadone dose. I lived with my dog also, and ate mostly rice and wonton soup, and those stolen yogurts but I always made sure I went shopping on Fridays and bought a steak or shrimp to eat with money I earned. I was buying those 25 cents cans of dog food all week for the dog, but on Friday's she got ALPO chunky beef as well. This simple statement enabled myself to know that things could and would be better, but it was something that only I could control. In 1992 I had completely left all drug programs and was independent and self sufficient to where I could sustain a small apartment and take care of myself. In the ensuing years I found a nitch and was able to build a civilian career, and also went into the Military. Now I am months away from retirement with adequate savings, a primary small home and a vacation home in Puerto Rico. During this time of normalization, I always tried to help those around me that needed guidance. I realize its much harder now to get back on your feet, and in all honesty I'm not sure I would have the success I did in todays world. But one thing doesn't change, never loose hope of normalcy, make a plan, set goals and if you can once a week or perhaps once a month do something for yourselves that is a normal activity for a non-homeless person. Mine was shrimp/steak& chunky ALPO for my dog. Don't fall prey to the government. They want you as a slave. Only accept the bare minimum you need from them to survive, then replace it with self sufficiency. Don't trade slavery to a drug habit if that's part of your situation to slavery to the government. God made us free men and woman, he can help you find a path to achieve this once again even when we occasionally fall of the path. He's not going to drop a bag of money for you to work your way out, but He'll provide you the intellectual guidance to figure it out. Good luck>

This breaks my heart. I'm so sorry for what you all are going through right now. And grateful beyond measure for my father. He took me in when I lost my home during the Covid quarantine. I was so dissociated during that time I had made no plans for what to do after the foreclosure. Today, my town and the larger town next to us have reaped many financial benefits from that terrible little blip in the world's history. Many businesses and improvements to the infrastructure. But, a stark reminder of how cold and sometimes heartless people became is the obvious growing homeless population. I'd say there has been at least a 300% rise in our homeless population in the past few years. They are everywhere and a person can never have enough supplies in their vehicle or wherever, on hand to help when we can. It's so sad. This morning, very early, I was at my storage garage. As I pulled into the building there was a man with his grocery cart trying to find a way into the building. As I reached my unit I could hear people elsewhere lifting doors and shuffling up and down the walkways. My truck was the only one in the garage and there had been no vehicles in the parking lot. And this isn't even the first storage facility I've rented from where homeless people have had to try to make their home. Our mayor tears down historic buildings regularly to make way for shiny new ones without a second thought as to how many people would be thrilled to benefit from one of these gorgeous, solid landmarks. I don't understand how we got so far removed from taking care of people and their basic needs. Your father? I bet it crushes you to see him in his last years not able to have his own home and those comforts. That stability and safety. I pray that human beings find their way back to being human and we figure this out. When MegaChurches start building MegaShelters and Mega FoodCo-ops for those that need them it'll be a start. All my love and prayers go out to you.

Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago will help them. They will have to leave everything and just take themselves. Everything is provided free of charge food, medical and dental care. They have detox programs and help with job placement and housing with the person is ready to go back out on their own. They are a Christian Mission- NO government affiliation or funds do they take. This Mission has been solely operated on donations for the last 147 years. It's an incredible place. It's a place I financially support. You can find their KZbin channel. But a person has got to want a different life for themselves which always means coming to the end of doing things their way-- the way that's not working. I hope they will just leave all that stuff behind and go.

Just organizing that space and using more of the vertical space would go a long way. I’m not bashing anyone and I’m sure that “spring cleaning” is the last thing anyone in this type of situation would want to spend valuable time and energy on, but just some thoughts… -Make a platform over the dogs bed for another (human) bed. Maybe use the mini fridges and some scrap boards? -scoot everything that must be on the floor to the walls, hang other lighter weight stuff as high as possible -keep the bikes chained up outside, maybe covered by a tarp. Pass the chain through the wheels to avoid theft. -pack things away that are rarely used and move them to the least trafficked part of the shelter. I’m just imagining how much less cluttered the mind is when it doesn’t have the visual cues of something disheveled. Again, I’m not hatin. The stuff I proposed is free, I don’t want to seem insensitive to the lack of money.
@archangelauriel0076 күн бұрын
We've tried making me a bed up high, but I get stuffed up if I get too warm, and it's going on summer now. And we do use as much vertical space that we can. This cage structure is held together with twisties and bungees, so it's not that strong. Thanks for the ideas though, you didn't offend me.

I see potential and ingenuity here. While not ideal, it seems workable if nobody is causing you problems like code enforcement or whatever. It does seem to be like there is a lot of electricity use for such a small space 🤔 But perhaps many of the appliances are just idle. A little reorganization could make day to day life more convenient. An object that seems to have value is worthless if you can’t or don’t use it. The stove for example. It can be difficult to get rid of things when you don’t have much. But if you evaluate just a couple things each day, you can probably be able to part with some things. Stuff can become a burden. Instead of being an appliance that helps you it becomes an object that you are a slave to. That’s handy that you repurposed the broken refrigerator as a cabinet. But it’s not an efficient use of space. A cabinet, a tote or small shelf would be better suited for your available space. For some things that are broken, get rid of them. It only needs……we’re gonna fix…… we’re gonna whatever….. Forget that. Just get rid of it. It’s also too easy for any remotely flat surface to become a shelf. Life will be easier if you make little improvements that cost nothing. Don’t dwell on the big problems that aren’t going to be solved anytime soon. Concentrate on the little things that are achievable. You will feel better overall as you do. I hope you don’t feel like I’m being judgmental of you or your situation. I’m far from perfect myself. I’m not in the same situation as you, but I am struggling with space and budget issues. We actively use very little space in our house because it’s full of stuff. Looking forward to seeing your progress.
@archangelauriel0077 күн бұрын
Thanks for the advice. We have already been doing all of those things though. We do use the stove, it's just hard to get to unless the bikes are out. We use the stove mostly for our baths. And we cannot afford any totes, which is why we're using the broken fridge as a cupboard.

Do you are your dad Work? How about cleaning and getting rid of some things your not using. I see potential and help coming your way if people see you cleaning up some things. You would have a lot more room to move around in if you get rid of some of your things. Also if someone was to buy you something they'll have somewhere to put it . I know we all have a hard time cleaning out getting rid of things that we want to hold on to. If it's not of any use on a daily basis. Your place look larger than my 650 sq ft apartment. You have much more in your living quarters that I can dream of putting in my apartment. Also it can become a hazard, to you and your Dad no walking space. All I can say is your free from paying high cost of rent /costly utilities and so much more that most or losing sleep over. We're the slay of high cost of living. You are so free and don't realize it. Seen to me you're great at living off the grid and can make a living teachings new comer that will be force on the street. Praying you will get the help you need🙏🏽

It's obvious that you are doing the best you can, and your space looks great honestly. I am not going to try to compare but life has been particularly hard the last couple of years for myself and my son too - he's physically disabled and lives with me. We went through a period where we had no running water in the kitchen, and the oven quit working and I had one burner functioning. No car for over two years now. We struggle to exist and survive daily. 😞 I'm sure there are many like us, which is tragic. It's just so demoralizing. I think its criminal, frankly, that people live like this in the richest country in the world. Other countries are the recipients of US $$ while we struggle and starve. Sigh. Anyway, prayers for you and yours. Life is so very difficult right now we need to hold others up in prayer and do whatever we can to help our fellow humans whenever we can. Sending love.❤❤❤❤❤
