soooo some short flights were conducted today, just making sure everything is all good before trying to fly the pattern again!
Its also important to note its still a touch nose heavy, I cant put the batteries further back so some weight will needed to be added to the tail.

Hey Peter...when there is cross wind, learn to use the side-slip maneuver. It's a fun maneuver that I use when I fly on windy cross wind days. When you have wind coming from the right, use your joystick to tilt the plane to the right to counter the wind, then apply left rudder to keep you straight down the runway. Inversely, when the you have cross wind from the left, use your joystick to tilt the plane to the left to counter the wind, then apply right rudder to keep you straight down the runway. Congrats, pilot!

I second someone's suggestion of adding a yaw string or a wing vane on the nose to help with coordination. Even in straight flights it will help you if you have a slight crosswind, and it's the cheapest instrument you can put on an aircraft. And when/ if you do get to the point of making turns, an uncoordinated turn is right up there with stalls in the things most likely to get you killed.

Peter, please do extensive ground testing including temps of motors, esc’s, and batteries after you upgrade to 14s and re prop. One Esc shutdown on a twin at 10’ altitude will force a tip stall. Also, because it’s a counter rotating (?) twin, there should not be the forces on the tail to make it ground loop - that’s when a single engine causes unbalanced forces onto the tail surfaces. I’d do ground testing at full throttle for at least four times the duration you’d expect to use WOT for takeoff and climb out. Also I noticed you are very choppy on the throttles; try to slowly adjust them. And stop screwing with differential thrust for now; fly the plane like it has one throttle so you can properly analyze your rudder effectiveness alone, then play with differential thrust after it flies well under one throttle.
@johnpossum556

Also be careful flying in much of any cross wind. It looks like with your minimal tip clearance you will not be able to use much cross wind slip correction before hitting the tip of the wing (on the ground), which could cause a nasty ground loop.

peter you need to make or get bigger props, with optionally more blades. you don't need more rpms, and it would be increasingly inefficient (commented before watching the video but it wouldn't hurt to have the extra thrust to get off the ground.)

Awesome Peter! *The motor pods are the main things I think needs a redo though!* 1. They are a drag man! LOL And, they collect air and throw it out from the inside and create a lot of turbulent air for the prop. 2. They scare me with how they are made out of wood and how they are mounted. *Please make them out of alu tube with a cone on the front!* Some welding will be needed. You may also want to slip some airfoil foam over their mounting bars to reduce drag. Also, Are you planing a rounded or "V" windshield and a tapered fairing behind you to address the drag around the pilot seat?

If cooling via the nacelle is required then leave a portion of the tip open. At first I only thought of welding on a closed cone, but now, with the help of your rebuttal, I realize that the tip (now intake cone) could simply be 3D printed, inserted into the tube/nacelle and screwed in place. With it being 3D printed he could easily experiment with various designs. For the rear motor plate, it could be machined alu with the necessary holes to allow air to enter the motor, and be of a diameter just larger than the diameter of the motor, were it could be recessed into the tube of the nacelle where the air that enters the nacelle would be forced both into and around the motor. (But, do not insert the motor into the nacelle so far that it covers the bell as the leaked flux would interact with the alu and cause a breaking effect). Thoughts?

Agreed, however don't put a cone, or put a cone with a smaller hole to have some airflow into the back of the motors.

This is Will from MikeysRC. VERY cool Peter! Congratulations! My favorite part is right after you landed, could totally see the love of flying in your eyes. Please wear a helmet next time though. Get a full face BMX bike helmet. Light weight, looks cool and will give you some protection =). Looking forward to future successful flights. YES, please take it slow. More glory to be had in slow safe progress then push it and get hurt.

I doubt they will fold, but the braces on the motormounts (between the two alu tubes) would be stronger if it was between the other corners. Now it is under compression, from the front outer corner to the back at the fuselage would be better. Beautiful plane, really looks like a big Rc plane, I love it!

He's getting much more powerful batteries, which will negate the need for more motor. The props he currently has are made for the batteries he'll be getting soon. They're too small for the 12s setup he has now, so they're not making the thrust that they can. And, bigger motors are a lot more weight, possible pushing the airplane out of FAR part 103.

Thats the smartest comment I've received so far! yes I may shim the horz for a few degrees. The plane was built with zero incidence in the wings to make it easier to build. Unfortunately this means it'll always fly slightly nose high. I know I'm going to receive a lot of idiot pilot comments about how its stalling tomorrow! :D

I am getting my private pilot's license right now and this is super cool. Something I hope one day I will be doing. Definitely keep in mind that you are still in ground effect for all the tests you have done so far, and expect the plane to fly slightly differently at altitude. Just don't be surprised when you lose a lot of your efficiency at 10+ ft off the ground. Keep the vids coming though and fly safe! *No flying under bridges*
@keegansponholz9260
@keegansponholz9260 7 жыл бұрын
he had it out of ground effect for a few of the hops, and he's throttling back to about 60% once he's off the ground, so I'm sure it's got enough power to fly around. Good luck with your PPL, it's quite the journey. I finished in June and I'm currently an UND working on my instrument rating. Should be a commercial rated pilot by the end of sophomore year :p

A few tips! 1. Put a short piece of string on the nose or windscreen, to see if you are flying straight in the wind. 2. put short pieces of string all over the wing, and film them with a gopro, to see at which how far and when the air stops flowing over the wing and becomes turbulent. This can help you to find how much you are allowed to pull. Here a video so you can understand. In these 2 videos, someone stalled their glider on purpose to demonstrate how the airflow started to become turbulent on the wing. The point at which this turbulent airflow began moves forward, the more they pull the nose up. In the first video you can also see the small string on the window that is used to make sure you don’t fly at an angle to the airflow which would be very inefficient. This might likely happen to you as your motors are mounted relatively close to the center of mass and you have differential thrust. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKnPcp15a81leLM kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYCmnGuCjrp4oNk 3. how about wearing a helmet? I know it won’t be sufficient for a crash from height, but for these small bits it would definitely be helpful. And if you ever have to use that recovery system, it might come in handy when the plane comes down. P. S. : Sorry for any typos or wrong terminology. I am German and know the German terminology a bit better.
