Good job son. I'm an 80 yrs old retired bush pilot. I'm old school and would rather be flying a Legal Eagle with combustion or electric power. I trust the tubular air frame. Also would prefer a pusher like a Kolb. Be less high speed bugs in your mouth. Safer prop area and better ground clearance. I'm intriged about your cover material. I built a composite called the Rand's KR2 great little plane. Keep on trucking and stay safely rational as you are. You will live longer. 😅😅 Dandahermit

@dave1135
@dave1135 4 жыл бұрын
Not Really crazy, he's a model builder, so he builds using standard construction practices and designs. Full size plane plans are shrunk down to build models, and small models of full size aircraft are built to test designs. Most plans scale up and down easily, and Peter builds to FAA rules and guidelines for homebuilt aircraft.

The energy potency is much higher in gas than a battery. If you magically turn all the power from a battery into it's equivalent in gas, it would be much less. You can take much less room and weight, or you can go electric. However, I do wonder why they don't use solar panels on the large planes as they would be right up there with the sun as they cruise above the clouds. That might help IDK but it's still not allot and it's an inconsistent variable. Just trust the experts.

Peter, what equivalent HP is that motor putting out and what kind of endurance are you getting with your battery setup. I'm trying to set up an observer platform for shark spotting/ beach patrol on Cape Cod during the summer months (no I'm not kidding). A 2 stroke is too noisy and I have been looking into electric. We need 6-8 hours a day of coverage, obviously with multiple batteries, just looking at feasibility right now. Any info you want/ can share would be a great help.

@@mcbure1 Close enough, I get 14.66. For 6-8 hours of flying time (continuous) it would require a battery of about 100 Kilowatt-hours. Tesla makes one, it weighs 625 kilos...
@MrWaalkman
@MrWaalkman 4 жыл бұрын
@@mcbure1 If you go by the official measurement, it's about 746 watts for 1 hp. I'm not going to quibble over 4 watts, so I just use 750 watts per hp. As for needing a 100 kWh battery, 100 / 11 = 9 hours of flight. Since the weight of the battery alone is going to take him well beyond the legal weight limit for a ultralight airplane, he will need one hour of reserve "fuel" (and I think that this rule applies to ultralights as well). Since his upper requirement was for 8 hours of flight time, he would have to plan on an extra hour of flight time. So, a 100 kWh battery it is. Normally you would need to factor in the internal (battery) and external (motor and power cable) losses, but Peter has done that for us by reading off what his power meter said that the motor was consuming. Does this mean that it consumes a continuous 11 Kw? I dunno... But it's as good of a starting point as any I guess. :)
