I’ve kept multiple pea puffers in community tanks. it overall just depends on their individual personality. when i buy pea puffers for a community tank i look for the ones that tend to go off on their own and dotn pay attention to other fish, which usually gets rid of the fin nipping issue.

I have two reticulated hillstream loaches (Sewellia lineolata) and one borneo sucker (Pseudogastromyson myseri) and 4-6 kuhli loaches (I put in 6, but only ever see 4 at a time... not sure if there are still 6). They're such fun fish, so cute, and I love that they're shrimp safe! I definitely think more people would get hillstream loaches if there wasn't so much misinformation online about them requiring fast flow, but they can also be hard to find. I discovered peacock gudgeons about a month ago, when I found sparkling gouramis and mistakenly got one thinking it had to be a pink one. I now have 2 since OCD is real and I found one when I was looking for something completely different. Heavily planted 10gal with a lot of tetras (4 types), pearl danios, 4 sparkling gouramis, 2 otocinculus catfish, 2 snails and some ghost shrimp. They engage with the other fish, super social with slower schooling fish (they like the tetras and gouramis, not so much the danios). The first thing they did in the tank was basically ride the current from the filter, which the tetras now do. Big fan myself.

That was my first lesson about scaleless fish and copper. I don't know if they are the same but I had great fun with what were called Malabar puffers all the years ago I had them, so much personality for their size. Best oddball I ever had, in a wide but short tank was a weather loach, they really do just survive about anything, they can even temporarily move on land to get to new waters etc. When a storm or bad weather came he would let you know well in advance 👍

Question: Do you think you're do more experimentations with aquatic amphibians like African dwarph frogs and newts? I've especially heard that adf's make pretty good tankmates with most fish with having around the same amount of success as a betta. :)
@robinfarrar34933 жыл бұрын
I can say from experience that adf WILL go after a betta and vice-versa. IF adf can be kept in community tanks I’d think it would only work if the tank is large, the fish are all bigger than the adf, and the fish be herbivores.
@janusvanmassenhove10833 жыл бұрын
I keep a couple of adf's in a tank together with my guppies so they can eat their offspring and I don't get an overcrowded tank. You shouldn't keep adf's in a big tank because those are probably too deep for them, as they need to go to the surface to breathe.

I had this really cool dwarf eel. It was kinda dark brown and blue. I don’t remember what it was called and I’ve never found another. I bought a special hide for it, it would just sit in there with its head showing, I swear watching me, and come out for me at feed time or if I put my finger in the tank. It was super easy to look after, it would eat anything, not aggressive and did well in a community tank. Wish I could find another, it was like the rest of the fish were fish, and then this eel had its own distinct personality.

Pigmy puffers also don't play well with inverts. They'll eat your snails and your shrimps. One thing you can do for them though, is get a tank really green with algae, let snails grow and multiply in it (and they will multiply if there's lots of algae), then throw them in the puffer tank when their numbers start getting up there. Personally, I can't bare to do that, so I don't keep puffers. It's almost limitless free food for people who can though. Also, feeding them live snails will keep their teeth worn down to a desirable level so you don't have to trim them yourself, which risks all manner of problems, including the death of the puffer fish. Personally, I'd rather stick with my hillstream loaches, rocket tails, cardinal tetras, and corys. I'm right with you about hillstream loaches. They are awesome. I'm not quite sure why they qualify as oddballs in the industry because loaches aren't rare in the hobby, and neither are fish which will clean the glass. They are just cool little fish, and every single one of them which I have had has personality by the truck load.

I had experience with marbled hatchet fish. They are really cool, awesome fish, but they have a tendency to jump. A LOT. And I mean I had 3 of them and all of them died becuse they found a way to jump out of the tank. Which is something im still bewildered by to this day. My tank has a top, and the only small opening is at the back főt the cables of the equipment to go through. I even put a small plastic piece at one of these openings as a precaution. Didn't stop them. So if anyone plans on keeping them, make sure to have as little to no openings on your lid. Otherwise they will find a way.

As multiple people in the Hobby have pointed out, that's the O2 levels that causes that. You can get them to spawn (a sign of perfect conditions in the fishes point of view) in a tank with near zero flow, as long as it has a lot of dissolved O2. A high flow is the EASIEST way to do this, however their are other ways including a combination of heavy plants and CO2 injection (which can lead to pearling a sign of complete O2 saturation in the water) or Airstone as long as it has a decent air pump AND defuses the bubbles well decently.

Question: So I have been keeping fish for over a year now. Recently I wanted to get into planted tanks. Ran into huge problems and couple months later my tank melted on me. So I read somewhere that you can fertilize with root tabs or just water fertilizers and it would be sufficient because one would seep into the other. So the idea was if you are using just root tabs the fertilizers would make its way into the water column. I did this and Oops 😬 😅 I also didn't know that carbon filters might filter some of those nutrients out so to remove them. Plus there is not a single source that can agree on how many nitrates to leave in your tank. Google has failed me on every account here! After my tank melt down I bought the Seachem line and frustrate myself with 7 different bottles of math problems every other day. Just bought a bottle of aquarium co-ops all in one fertilizer. I know every tank is different but how do I know how often to do fertilizers (1 or 2 time week)? How do I know if I should use less fertilizers? How do I know if I need the extra iron? Do you have to do weekly water changes? I'm actually taking a que from you when in one of your older videos you did a back to basics tank. The smaller older established aquarium will have more hardy plants (slow growers like anubius and java fern) and the bigger newer tank has all the more advanced ones maybe requiring more. Just not wanting to get information crossed here and trying to do it right. Ok sorry that was more than one question 😅 I guess if I summed it up im asking how do you know if you're giving too much or too little fertilizer?

Can you keep the hillstream and khuli loaches in the same tank?

Would pleco and loach work well together in 20 gallon tank? If so how many?

10:17 can anyone tell me what kind of plant that is? I got a single leaf from a local petstore and successfully grew it but still not know its name 😅

I'd love to get some hillstream loaches but I have a pair of apistogramma cacatuoides. Do you know how they'd do together? It's a heavily planted 55 gallon.

The marbled hatchets are great but I will agree, they are FRAGILE fish! If you can keep them past the 1 or 2 week mark you’re probs safe. And for these guys the group or 6+ is very important

Would a 20 gallon high be big enough for a few kuhlis and maybe some tank mates?
@Goldi-Luc Жыл бұрын
definitely! i have 6 kuhli loaches 3 yoyo loaches 1 dwarf gourami in mine and plan to add a few chain loaches as well. my yoyos will have to move to a bigger tank when they get too big tho

Love your show; however, I have to dissagree with your opinion on Peacock grudgeons. You definately need a school of about nine of these to see their interactions. Also, these fish have the peculiar breeding behavior where the male cares for the eggs inside of clay pots or rocks and sometimes takes care of the fry too..sometimes. The hillstream loach is my favorite and I hope to get some striped khulli loach fish.

I’m absolutely in love with kuhli loaches, and have been doing research on them with bettas. How many would you put with 1 betta in a 10 gallon? (lots of hiding spaces and plants)
@sierralovat54983 жыл бұрын
I think the limit due to space is 3. With me and had 2 black khuli loaches in my 10 gallon with a male mustard betta, 2 corys and 4 neon tetras. My Betta never did anything with them(hes not very aggresive really)and they seemed to be fat and happy in the tank. They all live in my new 45 tank now. All still pretty happy and fat. Betta gets along fine. Loaches are pretty fast but they are aslo very shy and will hide until night fall or when it is feeding time

A good thing to remember is a full coverage lid for Marble Hatchet fish, because they are naturally very good jumpers.
