I liked that you gave basically a rough history on your experiences with the game from release to now. It did help show the good and bad that this game has had over the last two years. Now that the over priced Complete Edition is out they officially just stop with this game and move on to [hopefully] better things.

Honestly, although many people didn't like DW9, I loved it. They finally renewed the series after several years without major changes. Despite many mistakes, DW9 is a big step for future DW10 to be a great game.

Don't get me wrong I'm glad you and some others loved this game! But me personally I feel this shouldn't have been DW9 instead like a stand alone Dynasty Warriors like I mentioned in the vid. And I know wouldn't be a super popular opinion for those who did enjoy this game but I would not want them to take much from this game. The open world, cool in theory, does not suit this game. And don't get me wrong I was hyped for this game before the release but when I and others got our hands on it, the open world just doesn't work well here. Unlike how like DW8 was with different unique maps, this one almost always felt the same and didn't give that same feel as the other DWs. In a RPG aspect this game is pretty good! But after this game I hope they don't go this route with the next one cause although yes, THIS ONE gave us something new, I feel it really great to just completely change the landscape of something they've done well with for years. Instead of trying to make big unnecessary changes, work off the good stuff you had in the past games and keep building upon it to make it better. That's what SW basically has done and honestly that's why I've been loving that series over DWs cause they just build off of/add on to the good things they already have there.

Dang I gotta admit I really liked the point of trying to look at it from an RPG perspective instead of JUST a DW perspective! I gotta say I do look at it differently in that light but it doesn't change my thoughts on it too much. The game was really just a rushed mess from the start. They did make it better with updates and of course left their more worthwhile stuff behind DLC but the damage was already done for a big chunk of the fanbase. MAYBE if the release wasn't a bust and they didn't make RETURNING weapons DLC and didn't limit some of the cool features in their updates, then this game MAY have done better. Great vid though I really liked hearing through your experiences through the past 2 years with this game! I can't wait to hear your WO4U thoughts too down the line!

Two years ago I had the perspective of another “Dynasty Warriors” game and lost interest quick. Now that you say it’s an RPG style, I will approach the game from that angle and hop back to playing it. In hindsight, I like the idea and the direction. 5 was definitely my favorite and I probably punch 999 hours into 4, xl, and empires as a kid before 5 came out. The only thing 4 had over 5 was having 10+ bodyguards.

I recently gave this game a chance on the Wei story up to the end of Hulao Gate, meaning my first impressions of the game are most definitely the final product. The music is still a banger. Everything else... --the weapon variety makes no difference when every encounter is 0. stun (if they're blocking) 1. launcher 2. air combo 3. finisher, press triangle to avoid damage. They homogenized the weapons instead of streamlining them --environments look worse than 7 and 8, which were ps360 games. In-game cutscenes have Bioware Face with basic movements compared to the cinematography of 8 and 7 -- *what* dialog boxes? you're going to read that text against the game itself and you're going to LIKE it -- *what* map design? you thought going open world would let you innovate some cool approaches from high places or enemy blindspots? -- in-game, the world is empty af. When you open the map, it's crowded with enough markers to make Ubisoft blush. They legit made something visually boring and annoyingly busy at the same time without compromising on either of them --the UI has no style --crucial interactions that establish important relationships between characters that are important in the main story are missable --who thought going open world was a good fit for *linear historical fiction where you play as one of the factions* ? --personal rant: thanks for showing everyone what you really think of union voice actors, Koei Dynasty Warriors 9's biggest problem is it's not actually Dynasty Warriors. It's a poorly made open-world trend chaser several years too late wearing the visage of Diaochan's diaochans

Ive been a fan of the franchise since the time you could start a 1v1 duels with Lu Bu and other special enemies. They really disappointed with DW 9. I really hope they take a comments and feedback seriously. Im fine with DW empire games for now

In the current update, you could switch to any character of that timeline during the chapter gameplay, they could just highlight recommended characters for the specific chapter(missions) so ppl wouldnt be going off track, also the AI is the worst(no defense mechanism orfighting intelligence). One other big issue is how easy u have access to the main objective and wall grapling, it makes the progress of battles pointless

Okay, hear me out. One of my biggest wishes is that I want Koei to stick with this format because I feel like they could push this in a heavily amazing direction. I don't want them to just go back to the usual, hack n slash it's been in 7 games (obviously not including DW6), because really, this game was a breath of fresh air with the new combat system, but if they hired a developer who knows how to make Open World games and allow Omega Force to focus on the combat, the next game with 9's systems could be something so much better.

Picked it back up yesterday. Burnt my whole high speed data cap to download it (its dish, it's almost as slow with the fast data right now due to covid anyway, so no big loss). I'm having fun with it. And it staying at a nice 60fps on my pc so often now is very nice compared to my struggling ps4.

May I mention the fact that after all these updates they still haven't added a way to sort your gems? You know? Those things that drops every battle and leaves you with walls of text which you have to scroll through just to find your favorites? Oh let's not forget that they think reselling the game with all the dlc at $84.99 is gonna make them money. DW9 just makes me hesitant to buy any new mainline musou title from them now and FFS please give those emei piercers to someone else and bring back the trishulas. They tried something new and it didn't quite work out. Koei has made similar mistakes before. In Dynasty Warriors 4, they introduced 1 on 1 duels and the parry we know and love. The duels sucked though (and have never come back). The most similar tragedy to Dynasty Warriors 9 is Dynasty Warriors 6 :/ Remember that one? Remember how you couldn't even really do combos without building up your combo count? And then it hardly lasted and ran out super quick so you go back to being weak again. AND they changed all of their weapons :/ I think Koei has learned a lot and they probably won't make the same mistake again. I don't think we'll see another Dynasty Warriors quite as bad as this one.

One of my problems with Dynasty Warrior games nowadays is that it's brain dead, there is no thought required and you would probably never die even if you try. Previous Dynasty Warriors had the perfect combination of hack and slash and strategy and you can lose sometimes if you are not paying attention.

put 30 hours in 5 days into Cao Cao and ya it takes getting used to in many ways but it can be really enjoyable when you get into it. It still lacks and there is joys the older games have this never will like that clean combat system from 5 but it can still be enjoyable mainly for the fleshed out story. The story has always been fantastic in this series and they just build on it. Yes this new combat is fun in it's own way but boy do I miss the strategy and memorizing of character moves.. I have to put it on chaos in order to actually struggle against warriors like guan yu. The rest is comically easy. If you come from samurai warriors 2 you are familiar with rolling and that's all you need here The true epicness hit me when I was sieging Shi shu gate and climbed up the wall. The pure graphically beautiful hit me so hard and I just stopped to be a sightseer lol. The designs of the buildings are truly something special

I had and still have a very good time with DW9. Yes its experimental, yes it would have needed another 1-2 years of development, yes the storytelling is subpar and no match to the standarts set by other Musou games. But to me the gameplay is fun, the characters are beautiful and the cities and villages are a picturesque open air museum of ancient China. DW is BETTER for having DW6 as well as DW9 in its portfolio. That doesnt mean that there should be another open world DW. It just means its fine and ok to have that game as it is.

This is a really good review. You articulate yourself well and cover every base. Consider me subscribed. Unfortunately I only played during the first two weeks of this game’s release at first. It was that bad to the point it made me not play a Dynasty Warriors game for a while. I tried to go back but I just could not stomach it. Now I just replay the older games. The only positive I had for this game was character designs. The environment was dry and lackluster. Everything felt repetitive and I felt like I was rarely fighting and spent more time traveling. I usually buy any and every Warriors game but this game was terrible. I never put a Warriors game away before. The game was clearly rushed, and yet ironically paced way too slow. The idea was there but the execution was mediocre. I’ll put 40 hours in DW2 again before I touch this again.

A tip for more consistent content (and shortening your videos/keeping viewers): write a script. I know it feels weird, but just write a script. You can say all these same things without the pauses and the ums and the "I cant think of it"s. If you really WON'T do that, just go into an edit and edit them out and choose the sentences/subjects you want and make them sound cleaner than they really were in the audio.

oof DW9 would be even greater then DW6 but you weren't fortunate enough to try DW 4 or 5 on the ps2 were consider and still considered the best out of the entire DW series and that's like a decade old game bc of the detail and content provided. if you ever get a chance to try dw4 i would recommend it even if the graphic quality isn't the same most people who have gone through the series since dw 3 or earlier felt the current DW is so lack luster and content had been cut that it took out the fun compared to the previous original series. hopefully they do a remastered and maybe you get your chance lol

On the story, I have to slightly disagree. They need to open the story up more. Use their imaginations a bit. I'm not saying throw the source material out a window. I'm just saying that hypothetical scenarios in the main story playthrough can be very fun. Sure, dw8 had them, sort of, but it just meant an officer not dying when they should have or a battle going a bit differently... I miss conquering China with Shu or Wu. Think I even conquered with Lu Bu once. Nope. Now some character get 1-2 chapters and are never seen again, and we can't do a thing about it.

Gotta say I was very iffy about the game after seeing a lot of bad reviews upon release, but after watching a more current one where there has been plenty updates, Im gonna try it out. Bought the complete edition that came with a FUCK TON of DLC and Im looking forward to trying it. I tend to like games that most people hate anyways. I will probably get annoyed with the insanely huge map, but Ive heard the storyline is pretty ok. I've always been about the story to a point where back in DW3 I was memorizing dialogue. Wish me luck guys. Im just such a huge fanboy with this game cause I grew up playing it with my dad and we LOVED it. Im glad bodyguards are still a thing because I loved having super strong bodyguards. Im ok with dumb AIs because Im someone who loves playing bots on games like Smite, Overwatch and Paladins.

@S̸h̸e̸r̸ 15 I actually came back to this comment to make an update, just wanted to get some decent hours on it before I make a review. Currently at around 60 hours of gameplay. Holy fuck was it worth every penny. $90 for full game plus 68 DLC items. The game has so many hours you can put into it. Took me 3 days, playing hours upon hours each day, just to finish the story for my first character. Currently on my 2nd story. If you love DW and enjoy RPGs, I highly recommend. I haven't even scratched the surface of what you can do. I played maybe 3 side missions, including ones that were mandatory to open up certain story missions.

I haven't played DW9 since the first week it came out but I hated it, I still couldn't believe that characters would auto level by 10+ levels just by starting and immediately quitting then reloading a scenario

While it's better now than it was, it still has an issue that has been an issue since around DW4, but is a lot worse in 9. Sometimes when it can't handle too many soldiers on screen, it will make some invisible until others are gone... unfortunately it doesn't prioritize enemy generals, so sometimes they just won't appear. It can even lock onto them, but you can't touch 'em. It can take a tidius while before they'll finally return from the void too.

It felt like it was supposed to be an MMORPG but they took away the MMO aspect out of it at the last minute. I actually played and enjoyed the MMORPG the had back in 2007 or so. It may have been a little better if you played a custom recruit that becomes a mercenary like the Samurai Warriors Chronicles games. were. I didn't like the clone weapons but I could live with it, it was sad as a Cao Ren player and not having his shield, but I didn't even get that far in this game.

I was done with the game when i saw those over priced Season Passes and DLC that seemed to be the only way to get some of the unique weapons back which where only taken out to sell them back to us, i guess? What intrigued me though was the impression that i would kind of have more of the "story for each charakter feeling" I missed since DW5. As someoen who is more into the story telling of the games and the characters rather than mindless slaying 1000 enemys (nothing wrong with that if you, dear reader, enjoy it) i found enough Motivation to put a lot of Time in it at first... But i was dissapointed with the removal of so many unique wepaons for Officers and when i looked up the Store for DLC that might fix that, i almost fell from my Chair, took the game out of my console and hid it away in a shelf I rarely ever touch!

Then they revealed they cloned Wang Yi and Lingqi who are my favourite characters and I remember going "no I can't believe they took the cross spear away" I have known about Lingqi even before they added her to the mainline DW because she was in a spin-off called Dynasty Warriors Tactics 2 (highly recommend to check it out btw) and I was so excited to see her and then it was rip :c

Honestly, it really feels like this was originally meant to be another attempt at a 'Dynasty Warriors Online' mmo kind of thing, that got turned into a single player game when they realized it wasn't going the way they wanted to. The material gathering, creating, fetch and extermination quests all feel very 'mmo-y'.

I hear its better putting the audio in mandarin, 1 question i have is can i do that while reading english subtitles? I mainly read subtitles more anyway but if it could also be done while the audio sounds more lively in the original language that would be cool I also looked it up to see the price on the xbox store & found out i cant get it without one of the dlc's. Not complaining but i just found it weird that i cant get the base game itself in the store I do like them adding the rpg element to it. Originally in the Romance of the three kingdoms it had some rpg to it. If they combined Dynasty warriors with the optional stuff you got to do in ROTTK i'd be happy with it Then again the RPG element is probably for the fans who love the story & want more than just battle. After all that time period had more than just battling

Yeah call me crazy but when I play this on the PS4, I also play the PS3 Dynasty Warriors 7 xl at the same time. As well as PS2 Dynasty Warriors 5 XL. On 9 when I get to a battle I go straight to the end and then switch to the others to get a better battle.

Yeah, I hope now they realize open world isn't their thing. Most of the mechanics I can see being polished and improved, but id rather have them more focused on the story line and making each character unique.

I had and still have a very good time with DW9. Yes its experimental, yes it would have needed another 1-2 years of development, yes the storytelling is subpar and no match to the standarts set by other Musou games. But to me the gameplay is fun, the characters are beautiful and the cities and villages are a picturesque open air museum of ancient China. DW is BETTER for having DW6 as well as DW9 in its portfolio. That doesnt mean that there should be another open world DW. It just means its fine and ok to have that game as it is.

Back in Dynasty Warriors 3 Nu Wa and Fu Xi made their first appearance why didn't they show up in other Dynasty Warriors games besides in Warriors Orochi.. also Xing Cai, Zuo Ci, and Pang De made their first appearance in Dynasty Warriors 5.. but some characters were missing in Dynasty Warriors 6 and 7 which it pissed me off.. in DW 6 characters missing Xing Cai, Pang De, Zuo Ci, Da Qiao, Zhu Rong, Jiang Wei, Fu Xi, and Nu Wa.. DW 7 characters missing Fu Xi, Nu Wa, and Zuo Ci.. but Dynasty Warriors 8 and 9 had all of them again Except Fu Xi and Nu Wa those two were now in 4 games of Warriors Orochi.. but what I also want is Dynasty Warriors 7 and 8 Empires in English dubbed..

2 years later, I think it’s a decent action game. It’s not what we’re used to for dynasty warriors, but it does set a strong foundation moving forwards. Koei has an open world now, they can make it better, they can add more stuff, and they can add custom areas for battles. All they have to do is not shy away from innovation like they did after 6. We have 50 weapons now, they can definitely add the rest for DW10. The story was also wonderful, and the voices should be better assuming there’s no VA strike during DW10’s recordings.

I agree completely. We could have a series change here and it could be very good. Also, on the voice acting, maybe give the actors more time and some context so they can figure out what they're trying to do for line delivery. Even if there's a strike, time and work can improve what we got this time around.

Just fired up the ol dick twist basic box and found this game thanks for the video I've been playing since dw2 my favorite was dw3 extreme legends the music made that game fire battle of Yi Ling I was MA Chao finished Lu Meng and outta nowhere I here a Gong and and the track final March plays and every one lined up to finish the fight long story short I pulled up with my horse and 6 officers are beating the shit out of Lu Xun ahhhhh good times

I liked the game initially. Then i bought dw8ce and never looked back. Jk i tried this game again 2-3 times and i deleted it after 30 min each time In terms of simplistic, dw is always simplistic. They dont need to make it more so

They may have made improvements and fixed stuff, it doesn't really change anything. Like between the changes in gameplay, the switch to open-world that adds nothing, bad siege battles, it results in bad gameplay. And it wouldn't be as bad if I was able to listen to the proper voice acting they've had for a long time, but I can't even listen to the characters to break up the monotony of gameplay or be rewarded by in cutscenes (and in DW9E they just got rid of English audio entirely. Filthy gaijin amirite?) Any good the game does is drowned out in the overall experience.

eternal nope from me, the BIGGEST deal breaker on any Warriors game to come for me are clones, ESPECIALLY clones that werent clones in PREVIOUS GAMES, jesus dw8 had NO clones and 100+ movesets, how did it come to this???

I'm only about half an hour in, so I don't know if you touch on this at all, but can we talk about the bodyguard AI? Like Holy cow I thought dw4's Lu Bu on hard was aggressive. I've been leveling characters I don't like too much as bodyguards and they go all in. They'll even do the finishers if you're not fast enough. Zhou yu took so many officer kills from me because I didn't hit Y fast enough.

I just think it needs more cutscenes. Them talking in a circle after every battle is just boring. There was one cutscene from a previous game of Xiao Dun fighting Guan Yu to practice and it was awesome. The only cutscene Ive enjoyed was Zhang Fei’s assassination by Wu at a banquet. I had no idea that’s how he died.

The open world killed the uniqueness of each battle. They all looked the same, and had no distinct thing to them. The first couple battles seemed like they tried to put effort into it like Hu Lao Gate but then just gave up the rest of the game. Every battle looked the same, every base was the same.

I got over the cloned weapons pretty quickly, honestly. The special attacks differentiate the characters enough for how their combos set up. Game suuuuuucked at launch, but lately I've picked it back up and I've.... Literally wasted 3 days playing it now. Edit: On the AI, you're so right. I have been getting juggled a bit while playing on chaos difficulty, but it's never been anything too rough.

After having bought it for dirty cheap and playing for several hours, i can say i regret buying it. I am a fan of DW and i always thought this one looked terrible but playing the trial i was interested in giving it a go. The trial version is better than the regular one. The regular version only has story mode, which i didn't like. The trial mode was great to try out the characters. The thing is the game is simply boring. Lots of traveling, no indication of what you should be doing in the sandbox, mindless easy battles and the combat system is as basic as it comes. Spam square, r1 plus a button and spam square again. It's very dull.

Bought the game without reading, thinking it was going to be like the others. Pick a level, pick a character, repeatedly press square, have fun. I now have to hunt, fish, buy homes and little to no action. If I wanted that, I'd go back and replay Nier. At least it had sexy androids...

Very good criticisms. One of my biggest gripes with game was its ascetics. Looking at your gameplay screen look at how dead china looks it’s nothing but fields of grey and brown throughout most of the game except if you head south which really brings the game to life but you’re only there for a chapter in Shu.
