I really am loving this return to big budget, mostly linear, action/adventure games. Its nice to play a game that doesn't feel the need to have MASSIVE open worlds. It always feels really unnecessary. And as a result of putting so much effort into quantity the quality of the core game really tends to suffer.

I refuse to believe there are no option other than massive empty world or linear hallways. What happened to creativity
@locke2517 Жыл бұрын
@@asdfghjkllkjhgfdsa8725 you say linear like its a dirty word. Linearity allows for more creativity. Fact is linear games are some of the best. Resident evil4 remake while having large open section is predominantly linear, as is God of war 2016, as is ff10, ff13(its not great), and ff16(pretty good so far, 5 hours in). Linear doesn't mean bad. Neither does open world either for that fact, but some of the jankiest games I've ever played are open world games. Witcher 3, cyber punk, assassins creed unity, black flag, oblivion, skyrim, nomads sky to name a few. (I like ALL of those games by the way)
@asdfghjkllkjhgfdsa8725 Жыл бұрын
@locke2517 linearity allows for lack of creativity in wold and level design. Sure there are good games that are linear but it's not because they are and most would be better if they had some form of complex level design. Games like l4d have creativity in the way you move through them and the way the enemies intetact with it give depth to the linearity. Im not saying they can't exist but majority of the time they're just inferior. I see no benefit to a linear final fantasy. In my opinion it is one of 10s biggest flaws. The older games were semi linear towards the beginning and always open later on which made them superior in my opinion.

I really wish more games would bring back the overworld map. I really think that's the happy medium between linearity and open worlds. There's also the metroidvania-like approach that Dark Souls 1 does, but I don't know if that approach fits most games. I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with linear games (ff10 is an example of a great linear rpg), but I'd like to see more games give us a bit of extra exploration without going full open world. Edit: I agree with the original comment. I was very relieved to hear that this game wouldn't be open world. I'd like to have an overworld map or hub system, but given the choice between open world or linear, I'll take the latter every time.

I feel like they almost 100%, 10/10 nailed all of their "four pillars" - Story, Characters, Visuals, Combat, but I'm kind of disappointed that they almost completely ignored the RPG aspects of other activities than combat and dialogue/story. Loot and gear is honestly the least interesting I have ever witnessed in an FF game, and while I know why they chose to not include mini games, I think it's a mistake, even if they don't make very much sense in the story. I always felt it was kind of charming doing silly side missions while a meteor is about to destroy the world or such things ^^ All in all, I think the good parts are so amazing, that the negatives are not a big deal for me, but I really hope they will improve a bit in the RPG direction for XVII. Also, please please include a harder difiiculty for the first playthrough, at least something that is scaled with exploring thouroghly and doing all the side quests ^^

It looks like a really cool game, but I think its going to be one I watch instead of play. The things that make it unique also kinda distract me from the vibes in FF games I like (party strategy, colorful cast, etc). It feels a lot like a Witcher game to me crossed with FF14 and game of thrones, and while awesome, its just not how I like to play. Thank you for the commentary and looking forward to the reactions

2:30 These in engine facial animations are quite jarring. Just their jaw moves when they talk, the rest of the face and eyes are static, which looks very unnatural. For a PS5 exclusive game, this is quite disappointing. Horizon: Zero Dawn had this problem, as well, but they made vast improvement with the dlc for that game. Not sure why Square couldn't get it right with FF16...
@novachikun Жыл бұрын
I dont know if you've played it, but since you have been playing the classic Final Fantasies and are on your way thru FFXVI, I greatly recommend looking into the short but sweet experience (and overly complex gameplay) of Vagrant Story when you get a chance. Vagrant Story isn't titled with the "Final Fantasy" nomenclature, but SE has acknowledged it as being part of the same world as Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions and Final Fantasy XII, calling them the "Ivalice Alliance" bundle. All three of these games have VERY impressive translation work into English. I'm not sure if FFXVI is related to those games (I doubt it based on some of the lore), but the tone and design of the game is heavily influenced by the Ivalice games and you might enjoy the experience with Vagrant Story, if you have the endurance to withstand the punishing learning curve.

I miss the older ff games where it didnt tell you where you had to go, it was more immersive as you had to talk to npcs and actually pay attention to what was said to know where you gotta go. I dont care for the travel system in 16 when going from area to area so far, but i am only 2 hours in, but am worried because game says my progress is already 10% which would put the story around 20 hours long which is around half of what i expect from a ff games story length.

It's got some really odd flaws, i found the sidequests/NPC conversations got even worse the further the game went. I've watched Clive hand the guy the thing in a slow animation way too many times. I'm about 30 hours in, and it has fallen into a cyclic pattern of gameplay, an element of which is sidequests/hideaway. They are really terribly executed. The stuff that's cool early in the game is repeated and telegraphed later in the game. I think I'm mid game now and the main story beats/cutscenes are entertaining and impressive. But the overall trajectory of the game isn't really creative. I hope this changes.

Edit : Just an update. I bought the game. My fears disappeared after the first act. Great game. I have played the demo and I still don’t get it. “it’s as good as the demo“ doesn’t tell me munch because I genuinely don’t understand what is enjoyable about it. I like seeing people liking it but I don’t understand why they liked what they liked when they try to explain them. I have played all of them since my childhood except 11, 14, lightning’s return and origins. 15 was the only final fantasy that was physically painful to play for me and I tried so hard to like it. I forced myself to finish it because I paid full price and didn’t have a lot. I am looking really hard for a aspect of 16 that I could like before I buy it and I am sad to not find any yet. Maybe I will have to wait for a 10h playthrough on KZbin of 16 to definitely know if I will have to wait for 7 rebirth before I get my hands on a new final fantasy.

At the end of the day, my comment about the demo was to inform those who felt the demo was strong, that the game continues that same level of quality. If you didn’t like the demo, just know it continued in a similar vein, so you’ll likely dislike it.

FF needs to put something else on the grill. Enough on the mystical fantasy angle and the usual elements. They clearly can't recapture the same magic as before so they might as well try jumping the shark and see if they can do something a little different. Just like when they went for 7, 8 or 10. Just something way out of field.
