That’s what my dentist did. They looked, saw my teeth chilling at 90 degrees the wrong way, then sent me to my orthodontist. I now have parcial braces, which have to be done carefully so I don’t develop an underbite. After that I’m good to go. They promised 3 months. When I had braces last time they said a year and it was only 10 months, so I trust them (for why I had to get them again, my jaw is complicated, the first time saved my adult teeth pushing out other adult teeth.)

Definitely go to an orthodontist. You’re bite is class 3, and with your bite being edge to edge, like it is, it can wear away your teeth and cause permanent damage and even cause tooth loss. Im an orthodontic assistant, and we see issues like this all the time when general dentists try to do orthodontics. There’s a reason orthodontists go to extra years of schooling because there is SO much more to think about than just straightening someone’s teeth.

It always depends who you go to. For example, my orthodontist said that I would only be in braces for around 2 and a half years. (Long story short, they actually screwed up my teeth, basically going back to square one) so now I'm on year 5.

Only way to fix a underbite is with bottom and upper braces and rubber bands which if you would’ve went to orthodontist, they would’ve told you that in the first place and you wouldn’t have to wasted a whole year in just upper braces

Yeah, go to a orthodontist. My dentist has a strict policy that root canals get referred to endodontists and braces go to orthodontists. You need a jaw surgery he’ll refer to an oral surgeon. He’s not touching anything that’s not in his line of expertise. Orthodontists are pretty chill, even the endodontist I went to was very chill and kind and helped me calm down a lot. Their office is pretty low key and calm.

Go to an orthodontist. They will address any concerns or questions you have about braces,and for a underbite the orthodontist will have you wear rubber bands going have to connect the rubber band to the hook on the back, top teeth, and stretch the rubber band down to the front teeth on the bottom.

I have a severe underbite and am currently in braces. Will be getting surgery in a couple of months Sometimes the issue can be fixed with braces but in my case my bottom jaw is really protruding forward. Ortho is straightening my teeth and surgeon will adjust my jaw (think of it like a jigsaw puzzle) Do research and find a reputable ortho. I went to 5 different orthos before I decided on mine! All of them we free consultations. All 5 had very similar treatments plans but I just felt most comfortable with the one I chose.

I also had a bad underbite. I was told that I had to get surgery, but I opted to do the head gear instead. It actually worked, but I did a little hack on my own bc I wanted it corrected faster. I would put 3 to 4 times more rubber bands to pull harder. It worked really well. I was really young though, so I’m not sure if you’re an adult or not. I was like 13-14 when I did this. I’m not even sure if I told my orthodontist that I was doing that. Also, I had braces for almost 4 years. So, it would take time if you used a head gear, but it actually works. Regardless, my orthodontist was happy with my results & I am too. If you do get surgery, I hope everything goes well!! I’m sure it’ll be much faster to heal with surgery, rather than the process of using a head gear.

The underbite should have been addressed what was the purpose of getting braces if that was not going to get corrected. Go to an Orthodontist don’t waste more money on those aligners I feel that those are meant for minor corrections. The underbite correction will take you a year to a year and a half but to accelerate the process you can ask for by weekly appointments that’s what I did

Only go to an orthodontist to get braces, absolutely never go to a regular dentist for that!!! Orthodontists do extra schooling to learn EXACTLY how to do braces and fix your bite, etc.

For an overbite or underbite u need to have top and bottom braces (or just hooks on the bottom probably) so that u can use rubber bands to pull the jaw the correct way, I don't think u can correct it without braces

They might do an expander on the roof of your mouth, you would have to use a key to turn it everynight to expand more and more, i had one and it isnt fun :)

Girl you’re beautiful. A nose job was unnecessary although I do not judge it because my nose is the only thing that’s magnified to me as well. You don’t have a severe underbite where you need to break your jaw just to make it a little more symmetrical. I have never noticed it… I think it’s just how you’re biting down, we have a lot more movement in our jaw than we think. You’re so beautiful and I pray you see that the beauty is inside out. When you truly love yourself as a person, your looks change before your eyes, even know though nothing has changed. For some reason the only videos of you that are popping up on my feed right now or about changing some thing and not about anything you love. I guess it’s just some thing I noticed the truly truly truly you are beautiful. When I look in the mirror, I see my uncles nose (who passed away so it warms my heart to see him within me. I see my moms lips and jaw with my grandmothers body. I love it because it’s inherited, I didn’t have to pay to look like this because it was handed down to me. We are a soul with a body around us, not a body that happens to have a soul in it

I had an underbite too. Before actually putting on my braces, my orthodontist actually asked me whether I was willing to do surgery to fix my bite or not. She gave options, which I liked. She said if I opted for surgery she would choose to pull out my premolars, one from each side, but if I choose not to do it, she choose to pull out both my incisors, one from each side also. Since my jaw is not too sticking out, I chose not do surgery and plus I was scared to do it and my mum also doesnt allow me to do it. Honestly, so far, by using thicker wires and elastic bands to fix my bite definitely helps. I can see the difference in my bite now. I’m still wearing my braces too, if that helps.

Thankfully, this person looked at my mouth and realised that the job was too complex for her. I got a proper orthodontist referral and my ortho team is spectacular! Sounds like your dentist just saw $$$ signs and that is appalling! Good luck getting suitable professionals!!!

well the reason the dentist probably didn’t see if you wanted braces was because you’re a grown woman and because you might not have needed them. it could have just been for aesthetic purposes. dentists don’t go around asking people if they want teeth whitening.

i had an underbite! so what is gonna happen is you’ll get these little hooks put on your teeth and you’ll connect them to headgear using rubber bands. you would usually wear it at night, not during the day. but go to an orthodontist, it’s really different for everyone and it’s better to get a professionals opinion.

Braces are supposed to come from the orthodontist. your dentist is not going to give you the proper care you need. Even with proper braces it will take years for your teeth to move to the correct placement; you're setting yourself back by getting improper treatment.

Despite going to the dentist routinely throughout my childhood it took me asking for Invisalign as an adult for the orthodontist to be like “Oh yeah we gotta get those wisdom teeth out of there, you’re also slightly tongue tied, wow you have an insane overbite and your bottom teeth are caving in” why has no other orthodontist brought this up before??? possibly why you had to ask him for braces is because you didn’t have an actually problem with your mouth structure, if they are a little bit crooked that could be fine and it wouldn’t do any harm, because usually people get braces to fix a big problem with their mouth.

Like the other comments say, go to an orthodontist. You have a class 3 occlusion but it's edge to edge. They should have picked this up when you were a child, as a lot of treatments are only effective before your jaw is fully formed. I had a class 3, had the braces and the face bar from the age of 8 which encourages the upper jaw to match the overgrowth of the lower jaw. Was ineffective and by the time I was 18 the was an inch gap underbite which affected my appearance greatly and ability to eat. The other treatments would be ineffective being and adult now so I had jaw surgery offered to break and move my upper and lower jaws. You definitely do not want to be getting this awful surgery for something which doesn't impact you. Try going and see what your options are, it's not uncommon at all to have your type of bite and they should at leasy give you a nightguard or something

This is prob late, but I had an awful underbite as a child. I got braces when I was 14 and wore them for 4 years! I had to wear this head gear every single night to sleep. Basically the head gear would connect my back upper molars with those little rubber bands. Well, I wanted speed things up so I started putting like 3 to 4 times more rubber bands to pull harder. It actually worked! I don’t remember if I told my orthodontist I did that or not, so don’t try this bc idk if it’s actually safe. The reason why I did the extra rubber bands was bc if the head gear didn’t work, I would have to get surgery. I didn’t want surgery and it was super expensive anyways. I didn’t want my parents to pay so much money. Regardless, I have a nice normal bite now.

Same but my ortho didn’t put spacers or anything though I had crowding… saying it was unnecessary for me… my teeth actually got straight after about 2 years but my ortho put a bend in my wire which caused the right side to shift upwards and I kept telling them about it but they said it was apart of the plan and it would work… about 7 months later my mom complained about the shifting not fixing itself and now they’re saying it’s because my teeth are big and I need to get teeth pulled… they’re saying they didn’t put a bend in my wire and they didn’t shave between my teeth when I literally know they did… they take 2 almost 3 months to change my bands I’m so over this

PSA: ALWAYS go to the orthodontist for basically any metal being put in your mouth or reconstructing. They are specially trained and have degrees for teeth reconstruction. Dentists should only be doing cleanings, fillings, caps, x-rays, pulling teeth, partials, dentures, etc.. never reconstruction on your mouth.. they aren't trained for completely readjusting your teeth/mouth, only working with what you have.

Oh my sweetie. I work at a general dentist office with a specialty in Prosthodontics. Anytime a patient needs braces we always refer to an Orthodontist. That’s the least they can do is give u a referral. Red flag if a dentist doesn’t answer your questions or brushes you off! He is a quantity over quality type of dentist!

ALWAYS GO TO A SPECIALISED ORTHODONTIST PLEASE, others not always know what they're doing, underbites are a bit tricky to fix, you probably need expansion on your upper jaw and some extractions from the lower jaws since you're over 18, maybe surgery to cut a bit of the lower jaw, these are possibilities, i know your orthodontist will give you the most suitable option for you. Find an orthodontist asap, you need to get those brackets off and get X-rays. That dentist could have done serious damage to your teeth! also you have what’s called class 3 malocclusion, depending on your skeletal structure you may even need surgery to correct the bit properly. Remember plague doctors were doctors and they told people all kinds of fucked up shit. 1 always do your own research so you can ask direct questions and address any medical concerns during your appointment. Lmaooo I got scammed by mine. I hate the UK dental care. I was told at 12 I was too young to have braces, got one of my teeth taken out. Then at 16 told ‘why didn’t I get them sooner’ was referred for jaw surgery as well, couldn’t get jaw surgery because of my mental health, was told I could only get braces on my top teeth then they never called me again and then when I went back to see what I could do was basically told I could pay for jaw surgery because now I had to be massively deformed, or I could pay for braces because they lied about me. Can’t afford either so I guess I’ll never smile for the rest of my life :’)

Nah, that's not an underbite. But yeah, visit an orthodontist not a general dentist for your case. A general dentist is the one who has just a graduation degree in the field. Whereas orthodontist has a Master degree in the field of orthodontics specifically. Obviously, the specialized one would know it better. It is like going to a general physician for cardiac issues instead of going to a cardiologist.
