If you are doing this full time, you gotta go with a new truck. With pickups that would be the Dodge with the Cummins and the 6 Speed manual. If you are pulling a tandem dually then the rolling resistance drag goes way up than if you are pulling a tandem with singles. If you sleep in hotels there goes your profit. Sleep in your truck. Straps, chains, and tarps with the corresponding rigging to make this work (binders, corner protectors, ropes, bungees etc.) also necessary. Your insurance is sky high, so shop around if you can. Always chase that next load(s) every chance you get. Lotsa laptop time checking load boards. Check your routing all the time, especially when taking a load that you have a back haul or at least a paying way out a place once you get there. Think economy, economy, economy in everything you look at because everything costs money. Speed, food, tires, where you stay or park, etc. I have logged over 2 million miles accident free as an owner-operator pulling usually 80,000 gross weight all the time. You can make a living if you watch your numbers. Good luck.

Welcome to ownership in trucking! Been in trucking for 20+ yrs. There will be waves of success and low points. Learn how to save, cut your expenses, and learn from your mistakes. Surround yourself with knowledgeable people in the industry. 1) Company drivers offer good advice when it comes to lanes that they frequent, pay ranges and good truckstops. 2) Owner operators can give you insight on pricing, good lanes and maintenance shops that do good work at a fair, yet competitive price. 3) Company owners can offer great business advice and tips. Learn how to connect with all 3 and discern good advice for your situation. All people will not want to share info, but many people will provide good and useful advice. Make use of the various loadboards, and compile a list of shippers and brokers that you have done business. This info will help you develop a list of direct shippers in the future. Relationships are key in this industry.

Expenses are eating you alive. Take out back seat and get a mattress. There's $220+/week back in your pocket. Daily food bill is high too. Bring more food from home bought at grocery store not "truck stop" . Tightening up puts more than a grand per month not spent on expenses . My opinion, no offence . Love your vids.

@DreamInspired
@DreamInspired 5 жыл бұрын
It’s actually more expensive than owning... it can easily come out to be 25-50% more than owning... and I spoke with them for 1 of my clients 2 weeks ago and they said it could be a 4-8 month wait on a truck as they have so many orders in right now for them and not enough inventory to meet demand. That’s for both SRW and DRW 3500s. If you’re not financially stable and can’t afford a truck payment should your company fail, I highly recommend them, but if a truck payment won’t hurt you and you can use the truck if your company fails, don’t waste your money leasing from them.

mouad bekka thanks for the support and the advice. I agree on the 90 days... I’ve been turned down on probably half of the loads I’ve applied for just because I don’t have 4 months or 90 days active. I’m getting close tho. And yes, Fl ins is high but my ins and especially because I’m in south Florida. Buying land in Central Fl soon and that will be my business address. Should lower my ins and taxes by about 30%. And I’ve honestly got no interest in cars. I have 2 auto haulers that I currently dispatch at least once or twice a month tho. When I start hiring, I may bring them on but I’ll have to add auto to my ins. Freight works fine for me for now.

@DreamInspired
@DreamInspired 14 күн бұрын
@@2fast65 I moved up to a semi back in 2019. Are there long term people doing hotshot? Yeah… but a lot of their success is based on their location and ability to network and be fair in pricing with their customers. I live in South Florida. The trucking industry is special down here. We don’t have factories, or manufacturing anything. Yeah we have small warehouses and companies a lot of that shipping is so small scale it’s not profitable to us, and there are sooooooo many drivers down here that there’s always someone who will move it for almost free, so my area is tough. But my friends in NC, KY, IN, IL, OH etc… they do ok with their business because there’s factories and larger manufacturing. There’s also less people in rural areas which means less drivers and competition. Which means smaller tight knit communities where they can be on the call list for companies needing items shipped. Location is a big part of hotshot success which is why most people drive semis and live on the road most of the time.

A small business loan thru your bank could give you a longer time to pay back and a lower interest rate which would lower you monthly payments... But it all depends on what you’re able to do. As well as certain apps and hotel websites have deals where they give you free nights (hotels.com and American Express have these types of deals). I’m also thinking you can build a bed in the back seat and you just make sure to log a specific way on your ELD to stay legal. Not even in this industry but know a lot from the outside! Matthew Clevenger thanks for the advise. Noted! Yeah with my first month in, I held off on the maintenance as the truck is new and I serviced the trailer myself. Plus I had to recoup the money I put out to get the truck. As for the sleeper part, I’m working on that 1 in the near future but thanks for the heads up on hotels.com I’m gonna have to look into corporate deals as my team and myself will need them!

ELD is Electronic Logging Device. All commercial drivers must have them. And you’ll only be able to pull from the load boards at first. You’ll need some time in service before companies will sign you up to haul for them.

Do you already have a truck and trailer? If so, there are a good bit of companies that will lease you on. If not, companies will hire someone with 3 years experience pretty easily with a clean MVR and drug test. My opinion would be your own authority, but it’s up to you if you want the responsibility

Anything is worth it if you’re willing to and have the discipline to put in the time and do the work. Driving is easy... Honestly, I don’t notice the time going by sometimes... I just focus on the bank account and getting the bills paid. 1 thing I’ll say is that this can be a hard life tho. I spent 6-8 weeks away from home at a time, come back for a weekend then right back out... Not to mention there being almost no work in Florida for this industry so I’m constantly far from home and alone. I’m currently near Detroit, picking up in the morning then going north of Seattle. So my tip is that if you think you can do the time I do or longer, then yeah I’d say it could be worth it for you man!

Ur insurance is too high. Shop around on ur renewal. And try Phenix Capital Group for Factoring. They only charge 2.5% of ur invoice. 1 dollar invoice fee and a 5 service charge. Next or same day pay. Once you have ur MC # longer you will be able to haul for more people. Last but not least. Try to establish some direct accounts with shippers. They pay allot more. You cut out the middle man. The brokers.

I know it's not the ideal truck for this, but I was hoping it could be enough to get my feet wet. Same goes for the trailer. I have a tandem axle 16' car/equipment trailer - the kind with the HD ramps. Considering I don't have a CDL yet, this is actually kind of a good set up. @DreamInspired
@DreamInspired 4 жыл бұрын
I mean I’d be saying anything with 130k wouldn’t be the best to start with... Looking at 10-15k miles a month, you’ll be at 200k before the new year. How much will you need to invest in repairs or maintenance along the way? How much have you already invested to keep it in top condition? Is it even in top condition? Keep in mind tho, the perfect scenario to start something doesn’t exist. You start here, you start now, you start with what you have. If you can find something better, sweet do that. If not, make sure you know how your income will come in, then get moving! 👍🏻👍🏻

That’s LTZ is a nice package. We’ve got that 1 on the Cruze and arent disappointed lol. Sounds like you know your stuff and can get your hands dirty and know your way around should you run into any issues. Unfortunately, most guys these days call a wrecker to get their flat tire changed 🤣🤣 As long as your confident that you’ll be competent to get thru a bad break down, then I say start with what you’ve got and get moving. My bit of experience here with my first truck breaking down, I looked at a trade in about 3 months before I got on the road. They offered $10k for my 2001 F350 Lariat with 160k miles. When I broke down 3 months later, I got $4k for the trade. Looking at the bigger picture here, Would it be worth holding onto your 2015, or better to trade and get a commercial warranty to cover 200k + miles?

@tiptowing 4 жыл бұрын
Dream Inspired great advice my 2015 is paid for , so I know they’ll give me every bit of 30k for it .... so I can sell it to the dealer and pocket the money and use my credit which is great (high 7) an get a new 2020 duramax and just go with the flow ..... I’ve bought 6 new vehicles in my times so I should be great
@DreamInspired

Duramax wise, I mean I’m not a pro on Chevy or anything, but you don’t see many of those out there in hotshot. I think I’ve seen less than 10 in the 2 years I been in the industry. I’d hop on instagram or Facebook and search Hotshot Trucking hashtags. Find a picture or post of someone with a Chevy and ask them their opinion on the truck in the industry. I personally stand behind ram here. Friends with Ford have way too many issues but I know nothing on the duramax. If you’re looking for the most efficient and effective vehicle to invest in, check out the FL60 or 70, the M2. Those SportChassis are insane and could be worth the investment if you plan to do this long term.

@@DreamInspired the 15% will cover the self employment taxes - that is what is generally referred to as Social Security if you were working for someone else... what most folks don't know is when the employer withholds 7.5% of your pay they have to also match that amount... so the Feds get 15% of your pay before any income taxes.... So in effect you need to save 15% for self employment and about 25% or so for income taxes if your making any money. That is if you have an LLC as your business model.... With an LLC there is no tax forms to file... all the income flows to the personal income of the LLC owners. You have much more control if you have what is referred to as a "C" corporation. check with a good CPA and understand the differences... Trucking is two things... the freedom to work for yourself... but the pain in the ass to deal with business issues. So first thing know how much it costs you to move that truck down the road... and don't be afraid to stay at home if the load don't pay enough... There is no use wearing your truck out to break even. Hey bro it's me again. I was wanting to give you some thoughtful suggestions. Since you work so hard for your money, it's good idea to take pictures of your freight before you touch it. That way, if some things damaged or deformed, you got proof. Also good idea to notify broker before you roll.. This is to cover your ass and not being burned by broker over money. Next thing dude. You gotta factor in the time it takes to load and unload and distance to next pickup location. Negotiations is key. Sometimes you can bargain and get another 200 bucks on top or get a preload with decent pay rate. I know you mentioned that you got a new Mc number but remember this. Taxicabs charge 3 bucks a mile in their fares. Big trucking companies charge up to 5.50 a mile. Owner op truckers get anywhere from 2.60 to 3 bucks a mile. Don't sell yourself short. 500 bucks fuel? What are you driving gas or diesel?
@DreamInspired
@DreamInspired 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I negotiated on every single load even since the beginning. I’ve gotten an extra $400 from negotiating so its key especially when the brokers are so clearly fucking you on the price. And yes, I take pictures and videos before during and after every load... more for KZbin and social media for you guys, but my own insurance purposes as well. And yeah I’ve gotten over $4 a mile on some loads and done really well. The cheap freight is what I’ve been moving tho as I’m brand new and learning the ropes. It’s taught me quite a bit! Thanks for the advice!!

Gas burns differently than diesel and gas engines aren’t meant for this line of work as the truck will be running sometimes for days at a time with little rest. That type of wear will burn your truck out fast. Single wheel is ok, but if you miss load your trailer and load it too front heavy, you can do some insane damage to you suspension and your differential will pay too! Dually is much better suited for this industry but that’s just my personal opinion. I see singles all the time on the road, you’ve gotta be careful with them tho.

I think $1.25 was way to low but I guess you got your 1st load and a broker took advantage of you too. I'm sure your rate has gone up by now. Later

Good job! For your very first week. You made a profit, figured a few things out. Some loads are good, some are bad. If you hit or exceed your monthly goal, then great! If not, then adjust and keep moving forward.

Question how new does my truck has to be to get started? Thanks in advance.

You can use any truck. My advice would be picking out your ELD before you buy a truck and contacting the company to see if there system is compatible with that truck. My KeepTruckin ELD worked with my 2001 F350 but it wouldn’t log drive time. If you’re looking to buy a truck, that would be the route I’d take. My 2018 and 2019 didn’t have any issues when it came to my ELD tho.

How do I get started on hotshot or transporting car Business what’s the first step ?
@DreamInspired
@DreamInspired 6 жыл бұрын
Step 1 is incorporating a business, getting your EIN and business bank accounts. After that, get your DOT number thru the FMCSA and they have a check list of everything you’ll need from there to go active

I started with a 2001 F350 and made it about 50% thru my very first load before it gave out. I bought a brand new 2018 Ram 3500. Start with a brand new truck if you can! As for my trailer, it was a 2017 but I bought it used. It worked amazing and helped bring in some good money!

Why wouldn’t brokers give you the load at the first calls you made?

Because I was a brand new Authority and they can see when they pull my credentials that I was on day 1.

Hi, sorry I don't know to much about this topic. How can I start the business? Can you recommended me a page? I saw that the drivers can drive just 11 hours, can be in team? 2 people. Thanks and forgive my ignorance.

The business isn’t difficult to get into but I do recommend having enough funding. In most cases, having around $15-20k on hand for start up and beginning expenses is a good place to start. Drive hours, yes you’re max is 11. Team wise, that’s a yes and a no. If you want to do teams, you need a sleeper that meets DOT requirements. If you don’t have that, you can not do team driving.
