This was recorded for the 'Archie' kids cartoon show in the 60's... it actually became a hit - 'The Archies' was the fictional cartoon band formed by the characters best known today on the 'Riverdale' TV series. Each episode of 'Archie' would have a new song w/ the cartoon band playing 😂 Archie Andrews was the main character... Betty & Veronica were the girls... Jughead was Archie's friend on the drums... Hot Dog was Jughead's dog... Reggie was Archie's 'rival' for Veronica (or Ronnie as she was called) while Betty couldn't stand Reggie😂

This song is one of my lifetime all time favorites, im 62 and it was a huge deal when this song written for a youth cartoon show became THE #1 hit on the music charts in '69 or '70, it beat out the beatles, Elvis, and every other star of the day - quite a deal in one of the most prolific eras in modern music history. It brings back so many childhood memories, the first Archies album was my very first album at age 7 or so bought by my mother who thought $4.00 was an astronomical amount for a record album.

They were a one hit wonder because it was a fictional band recorded by studio musicians. Produced by Jeff Barry, the Archies' "Sugar, Sugar" was originally released on the album The album was the product of a group of studio musicians managed by Don Kirshner. Ron Dante's lead vocals were accompanied by those of Toni Wine and songwriter Andy Kim. Together they provided the voices of the Archies using multitracking. Upon the song's initial release Kirshner had promotion men play it for radio station personnel without revealing the group's name, as the Archies' previous single, "Feelin' So Good (S.K.O.O.B.Y-D.O.O)", had only reached No. 53 on the Hot 100 chart.
