The thing that kept killing me was, of COURSE the problem isn't actually him needing to run in the middle of the night! Nobody actually pointed out how if it wasn't an issue, why was his response "don't worry about it" I tell my husband everything, he's my best friend. We don't perfectly know where the other is at all times, but he'd tell me if he was doing something out of the ordinary, especially leaving the house while I'm sleeping. Not even just because of safety, that's just what you do when you love someone. I casually tell him everything!!! And she just didn't know where he was in the middle of the night for months! That's so flipping weird!!!

OP needs to call CPS on the side chick. Not out of pettiness...okay, maybe a little bit out of pettiness, but mostly because those kids deserve better than a deadbeat dad, a drug addict mom, and her married, "insomniac" lover.

@thomasjoseph5876

Doing for pure pettiness basically kills 2 birds with one stone. A little revenge is garnered and at the same time, some kids are hopefully protected. One of my sisters had a long-time boyfriend who was cheating on her and got his girlfriend pregnant with twins. The cheating was a result of some drug action between my sister's boyfriend and his side piece. The reason why my sister never saw a reduction in money despite him paying for ALL of his side piece's needs was that, coupled with them doing lots of drugs, they were selling/distributing them on a large scale as well. The kind of scale where the drugs were coming from Mexico and being delivered in large quantities to the side piece's house and from there, they would sell some but most of it was distributed to other dealers. The cops nailed my sister's boyfriend and his side piece shortly after their Twin Girls were born. Because none of their family would take the 2 babies, they were destined to end up in Foster Care. My sister told me of a plan she had and I told her I would back her up (both as the "muscle", I am 6'7" 265 lb of solid muscle and I do MMA) and as a babysitter/nanny/mentor. She went to the County and after a background check they approved her to take the Twins in as an "Emergency Extended Family Member". After her boyfriend and his side piece got sentenced (both doing a minimum of no less than 10 years), they both agreed to sign away their parental rights not realizing my sister was in the process of going thru adopting them once the parental rights were signed away LOLOLOLOL. I visited both of them in prison one time once everything was settled and done with the adoption and explained to them the "facts of life" if I or my sister ever heard from or saw them after they got released from prison. I know my sister's boyfriend was scared as he had seen me in action with 3 guys who were harassing one of my other sisters ( I have 8 older sisters and me lol). He saw that I sent all 3 of them to the hospital after spending less than 5 minutes total working them over. Both of them are still in Prison and have at least 4 years to go and I have two additional nieces who are adorable and love their Uncle Tommy. Only my nieces and nephews and my mother and grandmother get away with calling me, "Tommy" LOL.

I'm glad someone else touched on the 'you tell your spouse if you're just going to start walking in the night'. My first thought was; "If this was innocent, he would have told her out of worry that she might be concerned waking up to him not being in the house." It was the red flag that went off for me and I knew it wasn't going anywhere good.

One of the things addicts do is try to get another person addicted too. That woman slept with him and got him hooked too because that way he would pay for both their habits and breaking up their marriage would make him more available to her, hence the "wellness check". But that mess isn't worth fixing for him, once an addict always an addict and why would you put so much effort into a person who's not worth it? I hope some other family takes those kids though because they are innocent and shouldn't be in that drug den the place is.

But what people often forget is that trust is "questioned" by someone's odd or weird behavior. Most people don't just question someone's trust for no reason. Something has usually happened that is out of the norm behavior for there to be a reason to verify. In this case, it was him disappearing for hours upon hours many nights a week.

It honestly scares me how you can be with someone for years and think everything is golden, no warning signs, only to discover out of the blue that they're a raging POS. Stuff like this always makes me think back to a news story I once heard of a woman who had been married to her husband for 25 years, just to randomly find out that he'd been collecting "illicit material involving children" when the police raided their home one day. And that he'd been at it for a very long time. I just goes to show that no matter how well you think you know your partner, you probably really don't.

Story 2. In my culture naming is a bit different. The child is given 4 names at birth, their first name, middle name, father's last name, then mothers maiden last name. Once a woman get married, she takes on her husband's last name. I was fine with that, but I was born and raised in the USA, my parents were also born here but they kept the tradition. I didn't want my kids to go through what I did. My parent's having a different last name then I had (I had her maiden name) always caused question, confusion, or people thinking my parents were divorced or I even had some people think I was a foster chikd because my last name was different from my parents. I got sick of always explaining the naming process. So, when I had my twins, I went against cultural tradition and gave them my husband's last name, then strapped down for the tornado from my family. But, that tornado never came. Everyone on my side of the family understood why I made the decision I did, and accepted it with no problem. I believe it was a bit easier because the understood my husband is Caucasian and his family naming choices were different. I hope OPs mom can accept his future wife's choice. I also think are being a bit hard on OPs and his mom. Yes, she expected her DIL to take his last name. He confronted her and told her how it was going to be. She fought back a bit, but did finally except it. I don't know anyone who has a good relationship with their mom wants to do anything to upset them. OP stood up for his fiance, plain and simple.

I remember when my brother told our dad he was thinking of changing his last name when he got married. Him and his then fiance thought it would be cool to start their own lineage (it would, and it would be very on brand for both of them). Dad just nodded, asked what names they were considering, and pulled out a big book of family history going back centuries for them to check out for inspiration (they were/are very involved in that sort of history/those eras and were very excited to look through it) they ended up going with dads last name any ways, but he would have fully supported them if they hadn't. And I think he was kind of disappointed, he was really getting excited about the whole thing. I ended up changing my entire name after my divorce, and took my grandmas maiden name. My parents have different last names, because if mom took dads, her initals would be PMS and she took objection to that. Soooooo I guess my entire point is my family is weirdly history oriented, and at the same time not very name centric? Aside from kids often sharing an aunt or uncles middle name, there's strong feelings about that and I might get dissowned if I had a daughter and her middle name wasn't Rose, or a son missing the middle name of a veriation of Anthony.

Story 1: Honestly, I thought this was just reddit being reddit... because the idea that someone is waking up in the middle of the night, sneaking out to have an affair for a few hours, only to sneak back in before OP wakes up in the morning... that's just ludicrous. I actually was thinking drugs were a possibility, but otherwise, even taking 2+ hour insomnia walks every other night sounded more likely to me than "it's cheating." How do you even fit an affair into that time slot? (I guess the answer is that the affair partner doesn't have a standard schedule). Does this guy sleep AT ALL? Maybe he's taking naps at work? Just so, so weird. Kind of reminds me of a House MD episode where the patient was essentially going through most of his waking life sleepwalking without realizing it because his sleep disorder was so severe and strange. The progression of choices made by OP's husband are equally baffling: guy agrees to completely subsidize the life of a former coworker down on her luck. From there he supposedly finds out she has a drug habit, and... I guess starts using? And rather than do that crap in the toilet during work breaks like a normal AH, he... starts going to bed, waking up, doing drugs, then going back home. I guess really, progressing from that to the affair is the least bizarre part. I'm calling BS on that whole explanation: Only way ANY of that makes sense is if the affair started before the financial support, and then, I guess middle of the night when he was awake with insomnia seemed like the most logical time to go get high/strung out and screw his AP. The real question here is did he ultimately break things off with his AP because he actually wanted to end things, or was he just too effing tired to continue? Weird. AF.

Taking or not taking someone's last name should be a decision that is made LONG before marriage. Same thing with the kid's last names. My wife had her maiden name She also has a "legal Professional Name" But outside of Hollywood, she goes by her legal married name which is my last name. I told her I would have been happy to take her "Legal Professional Name" but she said No, she wanted to take my last name. I even offered to let her have my last name and I would take her professional name LOLOLOLOL. It's the same name her actor brother and sister use as well as her actor/director father uses. It is a badazz last name that has been around in Hollywood since the 1950s and when people think of iconic tough guy Cowboys or Cops, they think of this last name and mainly my wife's father LOL.

Story 2: I think this is a decision that OP's fiancée makes. It's her choice whether or not she changes her name. I know a few people who didn't change their name, and their kids have their father's last name. I really think that is what is most typical.

I havent seen anyone say this yet, but im pretty sure the husband had previously cheated on OP with the ex coworker while they were actively working together. At least an emotional if nothing else. Coworkers husband disappears in middle of the night, leaving her alone with kids and bills and no job and she decides to call some random ex coworker that she has no contact with to pay her bills and take care of her kids? AND shes open and honest about her drug use with this person even though she has kids in the house and could have them taken away? AND he decides to agree to it and hide it from his wife?? No. Thats not real.

When my husband and I got married back in 1995 laws had changed in Canada allowing the husband to take the wife’s name. So I never liked my husband’s last name so he took mine. But our oldest child has both. It’s his choice if he wants to change it. In school he uses my last name.

I mean disappearing for 2 hours, what were the first comments on? Disappearing for hours at night even if just walking is down right dangerous for anyboby, especially from someone impaired(due to his insomnia). But funny hiw, he started "helping" his coworker because her husband cheated and up and left then he basically did the same thung to his wife. And he's upset because he's stressed? WHAT ABOUT YOUR WIFE? Now is not the time about you and your feelings, you wouldn't be in this mess if you kept it in your pants.

He is cheating and using drugs? You wonder what to do? Geez get the fudge put….. Story 2 if it not your mothers business if spouse takes your name. It’s not her business if the children get your name, it’s not her business even if you have children. If you are worried that much over mommy then you are not old (mature ) enough to marry.

Why would his first reaction be "Don't worry about it" if he was just walking? Update: Surprise, surprise. He's been cheating. But also doing drugs, giving his money to an addict, and putting OP in danger? Yeah, she needs to get out. And get tested ASAP. I hope those commeters saying "How could you not trust him" are happy. 🙄 And yes, his comment about being "stressed" is beyond ridiculous!

Ok so everyone keeps talking about cheating, but no one is bringing up drugs, and gotta admit...that was what my late SO was doing. Similar situation. Had insomnia. So HAD to take walks. Mind you i was pregnant with his kid and already had 1. Yea...he was out walking...till 6 am...getting high. Also, im just into the first part so if it is mentioned...then yay for awareness on the subject!

My issue with the OP in the last story is that he did not protect his finance he threw her under the bus. He and jis wife discussed and agreed that she would keep his last name. However he told his mom that his wife decided to keep her last name instead o WE decided she should keep her last name. Now the mom can create false narratives in her head about his wife forcing him to do things. Or worse she can start treating the wife differently and resenting her. Regardless of who broached the subject, when talking with family about aspects of the relationship they may not like, always use we statements. That way you're not throwing your partner under the bus.

Story 2, What 'family and legal purposes' would the mother having a different last name from her children create? That's one of the most nonsensical things I've heard. I'm not married to my partner of 11 years, our two children have his last name, it does not affect anything, like, nothing at all. I think this guy has a pretty good compromise with his wife keeping her maiden name and their kids keeping the father's last name. Legally this affects nothing, you still have to have a birth certificate for certain things and you still have to have an ID for certain things, doesn't matter what your ID says so long as it's yours.
