Ooh, this is a great build. I have been breaking my hydrogen pumps, even when using steel. It's so hard to resist going in there the second I can make steel though; free energy!
@jokecukie
@jokecukie 3 жыл бұрын
A basic way would be to build a the pump in a 2x2 room with a steel door connected to the hydrogen vent room. With a temp sensor to close the door at 250 or less. The remaining gas in the pump room is pumped out very quickly leaving a vacuum and your pump safe from overheating. The door to the pump opens again when your steam turbine cooled down the hydrogen below your temp sensor setting. You can do this the minute you get steel.

@@Luma_plays Question: My two starting worlds do not have Aluminum, would Cobalt or Copper be suitable replacements?
@Mr.Sparks.173
@Mr.Sparks.173 11 ай бұрын
@@edtinsley525 what you're looking for is the material you have with the highest thermal conductivity. Aluminum is the best one before you have access to Thermium, but I do believe cobalt is second best, with copper being third (or maybe that's gold, I forget). Most metals will work, just maybe not as well. Like the hydrogen might still come out hot, or you need to expand the loop by a few tiles to compensate for the weaker thermal exchange, but the base idea is still solid, it just might require a bit of adjustment depending on what materials you have.
@serdaraytemiz9978

I did a similar setup but I used a steel door to seperate the pump from the hydrogen vent. I also did not have a lot of materials and it was an early build. I combined the output of the vent with my spom. I used copper metal tiles, gold radiant pipes. I keep a thermo sensor in the chamber set to 215 so there is a buffer to protect the pump. for the hydrogen that I use in the base as atmosphere I passed that line from the water chamber and not the main line since heat is destroyed in the hydrogen generators no need to waste power on reducing temp. so my infinite storage is around 200 degrees. then I have 2 pumps feeding 12 hydrogen generators coupled to a battery bank set to 65 percent. between solar, volcanic steam power and the natural gas generators, they hardly go online. This build is of course 3 times smaller than what I built but this is really nice to see how much smaller we can make it :) Awesome work as always.
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, nice setup yourself. 12 Hydrogen generators! What are you powering? I always try to present the smallest possible build (that I could come up with - there are other people making it even smaller probably). In a normal lets play those builds of mine could then easily be expanded. For example putting 2 steam turbines on top or integrating a generator.
@serdaraytemiz9978

@@Luma_plays I just had the space for exactly 12 generators :) and its really nice to see your batteries top up quickly when all fire up. I am going to break up the generators into sections where they start in stagger. it will give me a chance to test the automation ribbons. I used to build "minimal" or "just enough" but then I realized even the most well thought out system breaks. I have just finalized my longest run at 12xx cycles. I consider finalization when something breaks and I have to sandbox the fix. I now know that I have to build things as expandable buildings. espacially the main astreoid. each planet needs to be self sustaining. while having smaller planets is good on performance, it is really important what you want to build in the long run. I usually prefer natural tile farming but it takes a lot of space.

this design was a great starting point for me to expirament and find a design that's best suited for my playstyle. i diched the self cooling turbine idea in favor of more reliability and flexibilty with the materials, and also in order to maximize the power output of the turbine, since self cooling turbines only really work when the steam intake is at 125° and not one degrey beyound that (plus my colonies tend to have one huge cooling loop that goes everywhere, so its not a big deal to just extand it to include one more steam turbine), i have a smart bettery and a thermosensor set to "when above 200°" connected with an AND to the turbine, and i have also a fail-safe thermosensor set to "above 260°" that overwrites the AND signil in case i dont use enough of the power and the room starts to overheat. The fail safe thermosensor also tunrns off the pump that pumps out the hydrogen, to make sure the vent doesnt put out 500° hydrogen when the pump is close to overheating. I dont know how long the design holds up because i useally mess around woth the tamer ans try new things, but i dont see how it can break, the tempeture never gets close to 275° and if i dont feel safe i can always lower the value in the fail-safe thermosensor

I've always found if you're pumps pull the gas out as it comes out of the vent it keeps the room at super low density and so the heat doesnt effect the pumps. only down side is they pump basically full time untill the room vacuums out.

On a low tech simple solution, I have one where the hydrogen room is narrow, with one side bordering a water reservoir. The wall is metal tiles, and there are tempshift plates from water to gas pump to keep that cool. The reservoir is from a p.water vent, where I collect it to go to my orchard/pip ranch and hatchery/cuddle pip pen. A few extra degrees won't matter. Edit - I forgot to mention that the gas pipes start out radiant going through the reservoir to keep the temperature even during eruptions.

About "tamers", i have seen someone using a trick with visco-gel and liquid valves to trick the liquid pump into pumping ultra hot niobium, making it immune to heat damage. Maybe try to replicate that, and show the viewers, it is preety inportant late game to have some niobium, especially since you can just space freeze it when it is in a liquid pipe for easy cooling.

I used this design and substituted petroleum for the crude as they have similar TC and SHC....what I forgot to account for was the density. Now the petrol has 'floated' up above the water and gunked up my steam turbine. Whoops! All because I already had a pitcher pump built for petrol but not crude. @Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 жыл бұрын
hmm nothing much you can do. you need the aluminum for the turbine and or the radiant pipe. otherwise the cooling power is not enough (depending on your geyser) to keep up with the heat in this design. You could try to make the upper room larger and place 2 turbines on top. then you can use materials with lower thermal conductivity. or you could use 1 turbine in a larger room and make the radiant pipe and the turbine from gold but have it run along the floor for more than 5 tiles to increase the heat exchange area. You can also try to use another liquid on the floor of the steam turbine. See if another liquid like water with a different special heat capacity and or thermal conductivity works better. I tested this for so many different things but in thissmall configuration aluminum was just the best. So I think making it bigger is the easiest solution. then you can experient more safely.

Now there is no points of using Hydrogen vent in current meta, because Saturn Critter Trap is better in every aspects compared to Hydrogen vent. You can completely control the production, temperature of hydrogen is much lower, and the amount of hydrogen produced is much higher. 2.4 Critter Trap can fully sustain 1 hydrogen generator, and you can normally find more then 30 at the core of radioactive asteroid. This is the ultimate power solution that even can replace petroleum boiler and nuclear reactor, only overwhelmed by end-game sour gas boiler. I wish someday you also cover this beautiful plants in your vid too!

I'm thinking of combining two machines that I have planned to produce clean water and clean oxygen without using sand. One machine will boil polluted water to steam, other machine will chill polluted oxygen to liquid oxygen. Since I need to cool the hot water from the steam turbine and warm up the liquid oxygen, I think this will be a great way to handle both problems

@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 жыл бұрын
Hey White HG the self cooling only works if the average temperature of the steam does not go above 135°C. If you can keep the steam temperature low enough for example through buffer (liquids or the steam amount), the number of steam turbines or other measures, then self cooling will work. Generally you don't have to use Aluminum, BUT in this build in the size it is in the vid you will probably need it. I think i tested it for 600 cycles with different materials for the pipes and the steam turbine with differently strong Geysers. And Aluminum was needed in a few cases. So in short: for this exact version you need Aluminum otherwise it is a gamble, BUT if you make it larger and use 2 Steamturbines or make the ST room bigger and have a longer copper piping run across the floor it might work as well.

Thanks! I have had trouble with the self cooling loop for the steam turbine (on different setups) : the steam turbine overheats. Do you have to use ceramic for the insulated tiles beneath the steam turbine ? Is it possible that the amount of crude oil under the steam turbine is to low ?

The self cooling only works if the average temperature of the steam does not go above 135°C. If you can't keep the steam temperature low enough for example through buffer (liquids or the steam amount), the number of steam turbines or other measures, then self cooling will not work. You don't have to use ceramic for the insulated tiles. But that means you have more heat bleeding through the wall towards your steam turbine, heating it up more. So if you have a little bit ceramic too spare: make at least the tiles underneath the ST ceramic. Edit: the amount of crude oil underneath the ST : the crude oil is there to transfer the cooling from the 95°C out put water to the ST. Any amount allows the transfer of heat. the larger the amount the bigger the buffer. Too much liquid and the Turbine will be submerged and stop working. You can experiment with that

That is sadly a weird ONI behavior that is not really intended. That could changes the water buffer mass over time. I might check out the issue when more people have it. Most of the time when i ask them if they can share how they build it they figure out the material is not the same as in the video.
