I’m getting sick of repeating myself so I thought I’d make a comment and pin it. I didn’t at all say that I don’t support women’s rights, that I hate feminism or that I don’t think oppression exists. WOMEN ARE OPPRESSED. They have been oppressed all throughout history. My privilege has not blinded me and I am very much aware of the struggles of others. I have worked with countless sisters who have been oppressed by their fathers and husbands, beaten, treated inhumanely and abused emotionally and physically. I am NOT SAYING and DID NOT say that this doesn’t happen. I said that this is not due to Islam, and that feminism isn’t needed when Islam is followed correctly. The way that we (the west) operate now is that we (Alhumdulilah) recognise this oppression and so we find ways to combat this, which is where feminism comes in. We say women deserve rights, which THEY DO 100%, but saying that women deserve rights and standing up for these rights does not mean that you are a feminist! If you are a Muslim and you are saying that women do not deserve rights then you are stepping out of Islam. If you are a Muslim and you are not advocating for women’s rights, then you are stepping out of Islam. WANTING FOR WOMEN TO HAVE RIGHTS DOES NOT MAKE YOU A FEMINIST. IT IS A BASIC IN ISLAM. I agree that in some “Islamic countries” women are oppressed, and because I didn’t go into depth addressing that in this video (which I literally explained that I didn’t want to do because it’d make this video too long) people just assumed that I was pretending this oppression doesn’t exist. I didn’t at all say that??? This topic is whole nother issue because that’s an issue about the fact that even in “Islamic countries” we aren’t following proper Islamic law, and so due to that, we (as Muslims) are the cause of our own oppression as well. Subhanallah, we have been given A COMPLETE WAY OF LIFE. Our religion has been completed for us and it includes advocacy for women’s rights and knowledge regarding how we should treat women, so why would we battle man made laws which have been shown to cause oppression with another man made ideology claiming this will create “equality”?? Every law and ruling is unjust in some way except for Allah’s law and that’s my issue with feminism! We might think it is good for us but what does Allah in the Quran? “perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not.” -2:216. THIS IS A PERFECT DEMONSTRATION OF THIS. We don’t NEED feminism, so we as Muslims, should stop relying on it. We should adhere to the Quran and sunnah and use that as our weapon!! Subhanallah, oppression exists but this is an issue with culture, not Islam. I’m not saying that women shouldn’t have rights or that we shouldn’t fight for the rights of women, but we should be using ISLAM to do that rather than Feminism!! If people followed Islam properly, we would have NONE of the issues that we have within society nowadays. These concepts wouldn’t even exist because they would not be viewed as needed! That’s all I wanted to say. JazakAllahuKhayran. Hope this clears it up, lol I think y’all are definitely in need of a part 2 where I speak about women’s rights in general because clearly this wasn’t enough.

Samantha J Boyle I agree with most of what you've said but don't you think saying "Women have been oppressed throughout history" is undermining (or slandering) men that have given lives trying to save their mothers, sisters, daughters, wives and their motherlands throughout history? Yes, men have emotions too don't you think? But they are supposed to be strong not crybabies right? Do you not think crying in public (or at least in front of friends and family) and being able to express your sorrows are much better than being called crybaby or weak or being the subject of all sorts of mockery for expressing your emotions/feelings. Okay, let's say women are oppressed and men are the oppressers then : a) Why do men make up more than 85 percent of prisoners? b) How do you explain this hadith? It was narrated from ‘Imran ibn Husayn that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “I looked into Paradise and I saw that the majority of its people were the poor. And I looked into Hell and I saw that the majority of its people are women.” c) Do you know why they're in hell? It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allah ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “I was shown Hell and I have never seen anything more terrifying than it. And I saw that the majority of its people are women.” They said, “Why, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “Because of their ingratitude (kufr).” It was said, “Are they ungrateful to Allah?” He said, “They are ungrateful to their companions (husbands) and ungrateful for good treatment. If you are kind to one of them for a lifetime then she sees one (undesirable) thing in you, she will say, ‘I have never had anything good from you.’” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 1052)

1love andcharity Saying things like "Women have been oppressed throughout history", undermining men and outright slandering weren't worth an emotional response or in your words "venting feelings and emotion" right? My points were pretty clear : 1.It's a lie that women have been oppressed throughout history (by muslims). 2. She's slandering muslim men. 3. If the women were the oppressed gender than surely they wouldn't make the majority of hell. 4. Our unGodly laws (western/secular) have been unfair and oppressive towards men which is why men make up 85 percent of prisoners.

I also feel so liberated since I practice Islam. When I compare how I behaved and dressed before Islam and how I am free of the untold society's expectations for women, I feel so powerful now, so me... Actually, feminism as we know it in the west degrades women. It tells them to be LIKE men, to dress LIKE men, to work LIKE men, to behave LIKE men etc. It endlessly compares us to men instead of making women exist by themselves as a whole different being. It's based on a superiority complex.. Whereas in Islam, both men and women are absolutely useful in their own way. They shine individually. Women and men weren't given the same attributes so as usual, Islam is sooo logical. I literally fell in love with Islam lol.. Keep up the good work ❤

I think you're sooooo illogical, i'm going to say that feminism doesn't want for the complete copying of manliness in women's lives, but they only want to pick what's the best for them. Men and women are diverse you can't group them, there are men who are smaller in body size than a woman, maybe they like cooking more, or doing household stuff more. While there are also women who want to lead. Islam calls for the subordination of woman, a man can have 4 wives isn't this a type of subordination? You need to learn islam more

Feminism nowadays is about taking men rights or abolish them, not necessarily only giving more rights to women. The majority of the first wave of Islam followers are in fact women. And Islam fought the traditional way of thought what we own, what we have and what is ours(men). There are many parts who still follow the tradition mixed with Islam. And I don’t blame them for most part, if the country is poor, most labour are hard work designed to be accomplished by men, even in intellectual stage, mostly(important word here) only men can cope with the requirements. So all of that hard work, eventually a country grows and men should just hand it to the women as they say it was injustice how we treated them, is just bullshit. Feminism has failed to ask or answer this question “why women who are raised poor, have more traditional values, than a privileged women?”. A great body has a healthy physicality and mentality. A man have physical strength by birth while women have sound mentality and mature faster than men. Our society was built by this foundation, the scriptures was rewritten four times, men and women on majority have what they can and cannot do, a long list of them, if one of them breaks the cycle, then the society will collapse. There are men who can do women’s work, and women who can do men’s work. It is not defined by which sex can cook better, Gordon Ramsey is a perfect example, he is a better chef than most women but he is beyond rude and aggressive, and then we see sometimes when he eats a mother’s food, his heart just melt and smiles even if it’s not as good as his. It’s the character of a women that needs to be protected the most, not their rights, that’s where Islam plays a major role, too bad we have many who don’t follow the sunnah, hadiths and Al-Quran.

As a moslim man I must respect to the women, the women three time respected than the man, woman pregnant carry a child in her stomach for nine months, then born the child between life and die and breasting her child for two years. This kind of fitratuLLAH can not carryed by a man, with all my respect to all women.

Feminism is destroying family system. Oppression on women is increasing day by day. Women are being trafficked to brothels to their civilized countries. Male Bosses teachers n producers n directors are using women like filthy trash but these women love them all then they criticise islam. How funny. Dear mina hope you join #metoo movement soon. Islam will do everything to make you safe. If you dont understand islam it is just your bad luck.

SubhanAllah yesterday I was arguing with my sister about feminism and my opinion was the same as yours. We do not need men to teach as gender equality since alhamdulilah it's covered in our religion and God has already guided us to what's best for us.But, unfortunately, in most Muslim countries women are oppressed and men are still ignorant to the way of treating their female companions . I'm saying this by experience, in my country for example, 80% of mothers treat their sons better than their daughters and plant in their minds the idea of "males are flawless and should be obeyed by their sisters or wives" which is the case in most Middle East countries. These people who gave the bad image of Islam because they inherited this religion without understanding it.

Sister I believe you're exaggerating and being completely unfair by saying things like "Most muslim countries women are oppressed" and " 80% of mothers treat their sons better" etc I believe you're letting your emotions cloud your judgement. I understand women are naturally more emotion and often resort to exaggeration not because I'm a male but because I've read some hadiths about this. If you are kind to one of them for a lifetime then she sees one (undesirable) thing in you, she will say, ‘I have never had anything good from you.’” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 1052) It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out to the musalla (prayer place) on the day of Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr. He passed by the women and said, ‘O women! Give charity, for I have seen that you form the majority of the people of Hell.’ They asked, ‘Why is that, O Messenger of Allah?’ He replied, ‘You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religious commitment than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you.’

Respectfully disagree. Feminism is an ideology, not a theology. And one can subscribe to multiple ideologies while still following a faith tradition. They are not mutually exclusive. Even beyond that, there's intersectional feminism, which accounts for the experiences of many different women. So you don't have to adhere to every strain of feminism (like free the nipple or white western feminism, ect.). I personally am an Islamic feminist. Islam gave us rights and islamic feminism can be used as a social force that checks those rights are maintained. We don't live in a bubble and we can't deny that despite the rights Islam gives us, they aren't always culturally or legally acknowledged/implemented. For example, if we look at most panels on Islam, we see mostly male scholars. And their interpretations of our faith can at times be skewed and even sexist. (Now, not saying there aren't a lot of great male Muslim scholars -- I admire and learn from many). Islamic feminism would be about making sure Muslim women aren't absent from the table and interpretations of our faith includes the female perspective. (I mean, one of the biggest scholars in Islam was Aisha, right?). Regardless, I think you're great and love your videos. And I love that you're for women's rights. I think you're great at facilitating conversation so thought I'd share my perspective. Peace!

Because the society is collapsing, laws are being changed, not mended. Islam explains this in great detail, a woman has her rights, and man have their rights, but no one is above each other, never written in Al-Quran that women or men makes more sins than the other, certain situations allow men to have more rewards and the laws for women are loosen up. Balance, equilibrium, circle of life, you brake it, you need to mend it. Feminism wants it all, that’s greed, and the men are the ones paying the price, and once men are down beyond recovery, those privileges that women took, will also disappear.

As a Muslim man, I am legit jealous of the rights our Women receive. I mean, I gotta go out and provide for the whole family while the women does not and IF she chooses to work, I can't touch her earnings while she has full access to mine. One can argue Islam gives MORE rights to Woman than the so called "West" does. Paradise lies @ the feet of our Mothers. And ALL women are potential Mothers, God-Willing. How beautiful and perfect our religion is.

And what? Hindus also say Paradise lies at the feet of the mother. Jews say you can only be Jewish if your mother is Jewish, Jesus had female disciples. In Christianity and Judaism it is also a man’s job to provide for a woman. It doesn’t prove Islam gives more rights to women than other faiths do because there are still many things Islam doesn’t give women. It allows her husband to marry up to four women, she gets taunted abour the hoors of paradise and how her husband will have two if not 72 virgins of paradise should he die a martyr, it teaches that a man’s testimony is worth double that of a female’s, it allows men the full custody of a child, it forces women to cover up even if she doesn’t want to so many Muslim girls are wearing abayas against their will, it conditions people to become robots to the extent they cannot feel human emotions so they marry people purely for the sake of following a set of rules.

My opinion is that feminism doesnt take away from Islam since secular or non Muslim countries laws and foundations and constitutions are not built in Islam. So while feminism does take away from rights of men and women that are practicable in those countries, it does not take away from things like equal pay, which are not practicable in those countries. Gods law isnt upheld to the full in non Muslim or secular countries I dont think. I think women and men are supposed to have equal but different rights, since they are different. I agree with you in that for certain

Beautifully expressed !! Islam is realistic, we as Muslims know that it is not about being ''equal '' to men it is about '' complimenting '' each other so that a family unit may run smoothly . Men and women have their own domains , where none is superior to the other , they work together for better functioning .

Completely agree with you Sam. As a male Muslim growing up in a practicing Muslim family, I was wondering myself when I first learnt the concept of feminism back to 30-35 years ago. Based on the family practice, I was then questioning what other rights do feminism activists really want for women? As far as I remember, all my four sisters were treated equally by our parents as myself and my only brother. They did have the same rights for education, for self development, as children, even to marry someone of their choices. The only differences made were mostly based on the natural differences between us: boys and girls; and honestly, in many cases the favor of those differences were often for my sisters. Keep up good work! Baarakallah.

I think the word you are looking for is ideology. Feminism is a cultural movement, meaning it seeks to change the way certain cultures exploit women. It may very well be true that gender equity is an authentic Islamic value, however, as you state in this video, the influence of people's cultures can cloud their interpretation of Qur'an and Hadith into something negative and as such, many Muslims (and non-Muslims) in certain societies treat women as lesser beings - often in extreme ways - and wrongfully cite their faith to justify it. In societies where feminism has readjusted the culture through education, to view woman as equally valuable, like certain areas of the West, more and more Muslims are able to read the Qur'an and Hadith through the original equitable lens that God intended for them to be read. Perhaps Islam itself does not need feminism, but some people who practise Islam DO need feminism so that they can truly recognise that gender equity is an Islamic value.

Totally agree with you!! Am a revert too! Recently learned that men and women are equal but not the same! And what western feminism actually teaches us women to be exactly like men. And this is also has to do with capitalism and toxic productivity. I want do embrace femininity. I want to embrace feminine energy. Of course many women are oppressed and women are still not seen as equal as men at many points but that doesn’t stop me from fighting for women rights and female voices and perspectives as a confident woman instead of someone that tries to be like a man ! Thanks for talking about this topic! Islam and hijab actually freed me. Am so motivated to start my own KZbin channel now 😅💗 in sha allah ☀️

I grew up from my childhood seeing a woman (someone very close to me) being harassed and beaten by her husband, often insulted by her in laws. That's why I always used to think Islam gave the rights to women but feminism is needed to implement that, because I seen the society being unfair to woman since my childhood. I didn't agree with the whole ideology of feminism but I always thought feminism is needed to give woman justice. But as I grew up I started realizing Feminism is being used for marketing and sexually objectify women more than giving the oppressed women justice. Even after that I thought feminism is needed for women rights. But soon I realized this ideology has more side effects than advantages. Thank you for your explanation, it really helped me to organize my thoughts ❤️

Glad to know the event went well. Thank you so much for putting this together. I personally have never identified with feminism or thought it was helpful in securing women’s rights precisely because of the things you highlighted in the video and the fact that Islam already serves as a perfect paradigm for human rights. But I associate with other political ideologies (i.e anarchism). But you’re quite right in saying that Allah’s laws have already taken care of all of that, alhamduliah. It’s easy when we’re confused about certain things that we look for order and derive our understandings from other places and completely overlook what Allah has already told us.

Dear Sam, I am a born non-arab Muslim and I grew up in 100% muslim community until I moved to the uk about 6 years ago. First of all thank you so much for talking about this topic because I think it's very important. In my live I have seen so many injustice committed against women in my society. I feel extremely lucky that live in the Uk, a country that women's rights are protected by law. I am extremely grateful for the feminist movement for their advocacy because of it today many women in west and other parts of the world today have the right to vote and run for office. The truth is you're extremely privileged and sometimes that privilage could blind you if you live in a society that women isn't told that they are "as valuable"of man. I have heard that so many times in my live from muslim men and women. I know a family member who cried when she gave birth to girl because she thought her husband would leave her. In my family my brother don't do domestic work only women do that. Here is the thing, I know some those men and wome people "may be" don't understand Islam while other men just thinks that they are entitled to have women as their subordinates. I talked to so many muslim men and women in my community and I am sick and tired of them using Islam to justify their actions and because of that I am a feminist. Until there is justice and people have true understanding of Islam I am sticking with feminism. Please continue talking about this topic because I think it's very important. Thank you so much

Subhanallah but this is an issue with culture, not Islam. I’m not saying that women shouldn’t have rights or that we shouldn’t fight for the rights of women, but we should be using ISLAM to do that rather than Feminism!! My privilege has not blinded me and I am very much aware of the struggles of others, subhanallah I have worked with countless sisters who have had their rights stripped away from them and have been oppressed, but this isn’t due to Islam, and Islam should be used to combat this. Subhanallah we have been given A COMPLETE WAY OF LIFE including advocacy for women’s rights and knowledge regarding how we should treat women, so why are we using a man made opinion to battle against another man made opinion? The latter definitely caused oppression and the former will too, because every law and ruling is injust in some way except for Allah’s law!

Samantha J Boyle of course we should teach more accurate interpretation of Islam. I am glad that you're are working with women and helping them. May allah reward you for that. I have personal experience with domastic violence in my family as a child so I understand the harships that come with it. I am interested in advancing women's rights both in non muslim and Muslim countries and I think that feminism can at least start a conversation about gender. I believe that women issues are not muslim issues but a human issues. Women all across the word are struggling from south america, North america to Africa. I think it's important to build consensus and coalitions with other communities to work on women's issues from domestic violence, rape to sexual harassment. Thank you.

You word it and explain it so beautifully that I really hope my Muslim friends will understand it better. I feel like a lot of religious practicing Muslim girls are turning towards feminism mainly bcuz they want to somewhat fit in with society. Inshallah I hope this video will give them better guidance. what the hell can i ask a couple of questions ma’am? 1- are you a liberal? 2- do you believe you can divorce feminism from secular liberalism? 3- is feminism objective or subjective? 4- do you believe feminism creates problems like destruction of the social fabric, rabid individualism, sexualization of women, depression abortion etc? 5- if feminism cannot be proven from first principles will you stop believing in it or logical coherence doesn’t matter to you? 6- do you believe that Arab women have less rights due to Islam, society or is it a structural problem bigger then society and gender? 7- is getting rid of the problems you listed above is worth it if the end result of feminism will lead to bigger problems? (See japan) 8- how will you convince someone that marital rape or domestic violence is morally wrong? By shaming them? Propaganda? How? After you answer am gonna right a long comment on feminism and the three problems you listed above..
@aliasyr95

@@Hattori604 what exactly are you on about? Do you think feminism in the middle east will be a carbon copy of feminism in the west? Because in here there are no laws against marital rape and the source for that is in scripture, and underage marriage is not dealt with seriously. That doesn't mean child marriage is unique to islam or middle east, but since it is allowed in islam, pushback for such policies is extremely difficult, even approaching heresy like in Iran. The feminism I refer to is about more rights to women and girls who clearly need them, it's not about fighting men.
