I found your channel trough the 800 days on duolingo video, the way I found that was by looking up videos to help me get started on learning japanese. To be honest any videos you find out there either sound too good to be true or are extremely demoralising because they make the journey seem like hell, but your videos have a very optimistic outlook on the learning process of japanese, you were the one that inspired me to truly get started because of that, you taught me that if I want to learn something it has to be done out of a passion for that something so now because of you I no longer see it as a chore but as something fun and interesting. Thank you for sharing your journey with us and keep making videos!

Been learning Japanese for about 2.5 years, mostly on Duolingo. I've recently started branching out to some other learning sources because Duo is so limited at higher levels (I do highly recommend it as an easy way to get into language-learning though!) Anyway, I've been trying to really focus my Kanji studies, and I've been doing some practice JLPT quizzes. I think I'm easily N5 now, I could probably pass N4. But I guess my goal is to eventually be N1, or like you, fluent enough to smoothly enjoy Japanese content. Also, my goal for 2021 is to learn the grade school Kanji, I think having a solid foundation of about 1000 Kanji will be a huge step for my learning

Nice video man. Always a good time whenever you upload. On the subject of the video, I feel the same way about learning english and japanese. I learnt english without even wanting to, just by consuming a lot of content and having fun with it I acquired vocabulary and understanding of the language. Although english school classes helped me correct my grammar and understand some metalinguistic concepts, they were only a small proportion from all of the process. However, when it comes to learning japanese, It's really not the same. I'm still at an early stage, but I'm unable to just learn japanese the same way I learnt english, which is by watching a lot of content and searching a couple of words up. The language and writing are sooo vastly different it makes content impossible to watch or enjoy untill you're at a pretty respectable level overall. Grammar is as different as it gets, and the whole hiragana, katakana and kanji writing makes you have to study in order to make any progress at a reasonable pace, not to mention all of the other aspects of the language. In my opinion, this might be where the issue lies. Still, I'm down for the journey. Learning japanese is really fun and the fact it is so hard makes you feel fullfilled and proud whenever you do any progress. Keep on your content, full quality :).

I completely understand, I think it's much harder to learn Japanese with immersion, WITHOUT a strong baseline, due to its very different nature from English, and of course, to know a word, you need to know its reading + kanji, instead of just its spelling like in English.

Thanks for these videos! It was funny finding someone else who learnt English the exact same way I did -- I knew Runescape had been amazing for learning English but I hadn't even thought of the "labels on all objects" angle -- and is now trying to replicate the journey with another language. I resonate a lot with your enthusiasm to learn Japanese while lacking any real goal for it. I don't really need it for anything when subs are so common these days, nor am I particularly good at languages in general, yet somehow studying it just for fun has been a real blast. Maybe this is the most enjoyable way to study something, it's very chill and self-driven! The only thing you do quite differently is this idea of learning first and immersing later. Thank you for explaining your reasoning, it makes total sense. I have an unfortunate tendency to throw myself at content that's way above my level, and need to constantly jump on the brakes to get some basics down, first. "Grinding for endgame" is an interesting way of putting it to be a little more motivating. Still, while the goal of becoming fluent enough to enjoy content with ease is a great one -- I'm certainly going for it as well -- I don't think we should be all that afraid of enjoying content with unease, either! I personally derive a lot of joy from slowly deciphering content that's too hard. Chasing that MMO-induced learning style, I recently picked up FFXIV and dear lord is it difficult at times. But really, being a confused doofus has been a total blast, haphazardly guessing unknown words based on their kanji, going on treasure hunts to the internet to find someone to explain to me some colloquial verb forms, and still getting lost. The extra layer of mystery and exploration is quite reminiscent of the childish wonder of playing RS for the first time. Oh, what an arcane object a simple tinderbox was to me, for the sole reason that it was such an obscure word to a 10-year-old...

How many words did you learn using anki everyday? And did you have to memorise them once or did it take multiple days to memorise them?
@Livakivi
@Livakivi 3 жыл бұрын
I've taken anywhere from 5 to 13 cards per day, depending on how busy I am as well as how many reviews I need to do daily. It's hard to say how many days it takes to memorize a word with Anki because the goal of Anki is to show you the word again until you're very close to forgetting it, which reinforces your memory of that word without having to rote learn it.

@Livakivi

I might make some videos about video creation in the future maybe. The answer is going to be really subjective as it depends on the type of content you make, and the type of content you want to make is something you have to figure out yourself. But generally, I'd suggest trying something new or do something better in every video, analyze your old videos and see what you'd change now. As for growing a channel, well, I still have a really small channel that only recently started growing, but I assume consistency is one of the most important factors.

You did awesome videos. So far the only two things I disagree with is not learning the Kanji with Heisig (or Koohii stories) and completely ignoring textbooks. Japanese is not like French or Spanish where you can just "do it". Japanese will always look strange if you don't invest the time to remember the Kanji. But this is just nitpicking. Especially if you just want to read manga and understand anime, you don't need to be on a "fluent" level. The whole question is what is your REAL end goal and how much do you want to optimize your learning. If you want to go further beyond than entertainment for teenager like anime or manga, then you either remember Kanji now or do it later. The same with textbooks. If you want to write something for a higher level than anime or manga you need to know what is the right and what is the wrong Japanese. One advice from me if you are just in for anime and manga. LEARN THE "ANIME LANGUAGE". For example anime use some kind of Japanese dialect. Like "sou ja nee" instead of "sou dewa arimasen/sou dewa nai/sou ja nai". Especially if you just learn "normal Japanese" you will never understand why anime sound different sometimes. It's not a lot to learn, but this will make you understand anime much easier and you will also understand that most "anime dialect" is just a way to speak something in an easier way like "nee" instead of "nai". The best criticism I heard about "immersion approach" is the example of the low educated unemployed "native speaker". This person does nothing else than immersion all day in his "native language", but even though he is the "master of immersion", he is still bad in his "native" language and he struggles to find a job. This should remind you that ignoring textbooks and Kanji doesn't mean that "immersion" will be a substitute to Heisig and textbooks. Only because you understand the content you watch doesn't mean your language skills are on a meaningful level. This is just very advanced criticism, but this should show you that it's important to define your real end goal and to work towards this end goal. The biggest problem with the human brain is that it is lazy and tries to only remember important stuff. That's why immersion can also have a negative side because your brain will try to forget everything which you aren't actively learning and Kanji as well as grammar is something you won't really remember just by "passive immersion".

you talked about using anki flahscard to learn japanese. First, the core 2k/6k deck i got asks to fill the blank in a japanese sentence and gives the clue of the word in english. Is it good that way or should it be the other way around, having the word and asking if I understand what it means. And second, if the way I have it right now is ok, should I consider that I have a good answer if I know how to say the word but do not know the kanji to write it? (ex: I know what is "nani" but wouldn't be able to write the kanji for it)

Has that ever been the case for you? Learning a language and kind of "hoping" you'd get the pronounciation right with time? IIRC your japanese pronounciation wasn't perfect either in the first video you made. Has that improved since then or do you simply care more about listening/reading comprehension than speaking? Thanks in advance. :D

You have a lot of good videos on your techniques and journeys through your language learning experience. However, I've yet to hear you present your actual knowledge of the language in practice yet. Do you think you could engage in conversation with japanese people without problems today?
@Livakivi

Thanks! I am going to make a progress update video in the near future, probably once I hit 3 years of learning. I haven't focused on output yet, so even though I could convey most of my thoughts, they would most likely come out as unnatural withs some grammar mistakes right now.

I recommend checking out this Refold article: refold.la/roadmap/stage-1/a/anki-setup And if you're feeling like going more in-depth, you can check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oquZYaSKhZd6rpI

I've started learning Japanese 2 months ago, and then I came across your first video, I knew that the stars aligned and it was some sort of sign. Anyway, that's the right mindset I think, it's also the mindset that AJATT highly recommends. Do not focus on the destination, focus on the journey, do your reviews, immerse yourself and eventually you won't even notice when you'll be able to come to full comprehension. Personally when I watch/read some Japanese content and see a word or kanji I've learned I go "Hey! I know what that means!" which is a negligible but at the same time a motivation boost that means there is indeed some progress.

If I had to give myself a goal on my learning journey, it would be to be comfortable enough to visit Japan and comprehend everything that is read or spoken, and be able to respond naturally. That's a long way away, but I'm learning every day and honestly enjoying seeing the progress I'm making. The more of my study journal I fill out, the longer I have to scroll to get where I am in the kanji list, the more motivated I am to see it through, even if I'm just focusing the kanji at the moment, I'm still making my way towards that goal.

I've actually read the one in the video, although in English. I remember those books being so difficult in Japanese even for natives, that there are now simplified/modernized versions of them.

My Japanese learning journey has been a bit different. I built a basic foundation of 1200 words and basic grammar (N5 + N4) and started reading. After that I have been adding new words to a self-made deck, currently having over 2000 words. I think it is much more fun to get new words from context and content that I enjoy rather than a pre-made list, and making my own deck is very satisfying. Just my 2 cents
