It kind of makes me uncomfortable when people brag about themselves. But it really shouldn't. If someone is amazing at something and put a lot of effort into it, they should be able to be proud of their work.

This brought back some very sweet memories. I did a sort of homestay in Okayama prefecture last year (I volunteered at their - small - candy making business and helped on the farm in return for food and housing). The food I had there was the best I've ever eaten anywhere. And I harvested rice! ... oh the memories haha

soshiramyun I didn't know any japanese at all, but my host family spoke english quite well. But I think Sharla mentioned somewhere that she didn't speak much japanese when she did her first homestay as a teenager, and the family didn't speak english, and it was fine too. I think you learn a lot that way, and you can always find a way to communicate. Basically just keep an open mind and everything will be fine :)

Sharla in Japan Sharla, Thank you for all the wonderful videos you share of the northern region of Japan! My boyfriend, his friend and I are planning a trip to Japan this upcoming March (a first for all us of) and I wanted to see the beautiful northern region on my trip. Your videos over the years have given me some great destination ideas and I REALLY appreciate you linking sites in this videos description to help me with my planning for this region. :) Especially since I'm a little overwhelmed and lost when trying to figure out how to get where and where to go. Haha Thank you again for the information. Much love! -Danielle

I'm a new fan and I've been going through a lot of your older videos in all of your channels, it has been a fun and educational way to pass the hours in the days of "social distancing". I love that your ability with the language allows us to see a lot of real, genuine interaction, and better appreciate the culture and the people. My only regret is that with all the travel restrictions I can't immediately go and do all the things!

I would like to start off by thanking you. I recently just found your channel; throughout the time, I have been watching videos of your experiences. When I was 17, my dream was to move to Japan and start a new life there, that dream led onto until after I was 18. My life revolved around wanting to move to Japan, or even have it as a place I can resort to in any given situation. I lost all aspirations of going or even living there. Thankfully, your channel has revived those dreams of mine, even while I'm at my lowest right now. I now aspire to continue working towards my dream of living in Japan or even a situation where I can buy a home there and go whenever I would like to. I love your personality, it has brought a smile to my face and reminded me that anything is possible. Thank you.

I have a persimmon tree in my backyard. I got the house a year ago, I was so happy to see that it was already established in the back yard. It's about 8 feet tall. I didn't get too many this year, but it's really cool to get any at all. I have the hachiya ones, which are really really not good to eat unless super ripe, but they are worth the wait. - I live in a Portland, OR suburb. I've never seen a persimmon tree in the area before the one I now have.

Selena Davison It's definitely expensive, but oh so worth it. It's so much fun and once you go there, you'll never want to go back home. Haha. I went to Japan back in 2012 for vacation. Went to all the popular cities, Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, etc. Such an experience. Loved it. Now I'm going back for a second time, next year, this time to Hokkaido. Someday soon, I am hoping to move over there. My Japanese isn't great, but that's one of the many reasons why I want to go and live there for a while.

I find it somehow funny how humanity gets used to people running around talking to a camera all the time. Did the family find it weird or did you have to go through some kind of difficulties due to your filming in open places (like trains, cafes, restaurants...)? Not the official sort of difficulties, more like people complaining to you about your filming or something of the sorts? Good video btw. was very fun to watch! Kepp up your great work!

3:40 Sharla I agree with another comment that it's likely a different dialect. I can tell she's saying something about being on the edge of something and mixing up something as well. Most likely how she's throwing the seed along the string line there and how it turns into the soil? I think lots of viewers might not realize there are different dialects across Japan. Thanks for the great video! Tomato was hilarious!

I've made a playlist of lots of her videos. I like to play them while I'm getting ready. And I've noticed some are missing. Some I liked a lot. I hope you don't miss some of your favourites too.

Japan used to be vegetarian/vegan country before they started eating meat, which is only something like 100-150 years old.

Holy crap! I loved this, Sharla! I want to do a homestay. (One problem: now I'm starving, and nothing in the fridge). This was great. I'm so sick of apartment tours and all the regular J-youtube stuff. This was really fun. BTW, youtube unsubbed me, but I don't know for how long. It seems like a long time since I've seen one of your videos. I subbed again a couple of days ago. I hope it sticks.
