This brought back some very sweet memories. I did a sort of homestay in Okayama prefecture last year (I volunteered at their - small - candy making business and helped on the farm in return for food and housing). The food I had there was the best I've ever eaten anywhere. And I harvested rice! ... oh the memories haha

soshiramyun I didn't know any japanese at all, but my host family spoke english quite well. But I think Sharla mentioned somewhere that she didn't speak much japanese when she did her first homestay as a teenager, and the family didn't speak english, and it was fine too. I think you learn a lot that way, and you can always find a way to communicate. Basically just keep an open mind and everything will be fine :)

My boyfriend, his friend and I are planning a trip to Japan this upcoming March (a first for all us of) and I wanted to see the beautiful northern region on my trip. Your videos over the years have given me some great destination ideas and I REALLY appreciate you linking sites in this videos description to help me with my planning for this region. :) Especially since I'm a little overwhelmed and lost when trying to figure out how to get where and where to go. I would like to start off by thanking you. I recently just found your channel; throughout the time, I have been watching videos of your experiences. When I was 17, my dream was to move to Japan and start a new life there, that dream led onto until after I was 18. My life revolved around wanting to move to Japan, or even have it as a place I can resort to in any given situation. I lost all aspirations of going or even living there. Thankfully, your channel has revived those dreams of mine, even while I'm at my lowest right now. I now aspire to continue working towards my dream of living in Japan or even a situation where I can buy a home there and go whenever I would like to. I love your personality, it has brought a smile to my face and reminded me that anything is possible. Thank you.

I have a persimmon tree in my backyard. I got the house a year ago, I was so happy to see that it was already established in the back yard. It's about 8 feet tall. I didn't get too many this year, but it's really cool to get any at all. I have the hachiya ones, which are really really not good to eat unless super ripe, but they are worth the wait. - I live in a Portland, OR suburb. I've never seen a persimmon tree in the area before the one I now have.

Went to all the popular cities, Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, etc. Such an experience. Loved it. Now I'm going back for a second time, next year, this time to Hokkaido. Someday soon, I am hoping to move over there. My Japanese isn't great, but that's one of the many reasons why I want to go and live there for a while.

I find it somehow funny how humanity gets used to people running around talking to a camera all the time. Did the family find it weird or did you have to go through some kind of difficulties due to your filming in open places (like trains, cafes, restaurants...)? Not the official sort of difficulties, more like people complaining to you about your filming or something of the sorts? Good video btw. was very fun to watch! Kepp up your great work!

3:40 Sharla I agree with another comment that it's likely a different dialect. I can tell she's saying something about being on the edge of something and mixing up something as well. Most likely how she's throwing the seed along the string line there and how it turns into the soil? I think lots of viewers might not realize there are different dialects across Japan.
