I'm 20 and have almost finished my 5 year course of braces. I was 15 when I got them and have had to have jaw surgery twice due to an underbite I had. I used to be so self conscious of how I spoke as I used to have a lisp and I used to always cover my mouth when I laughed or ate etc. When I was told I had to have surgery I was so upset and didn't think I needed it but a year after having it I couldn't be any more happy with how I look and I cannot believe how much more confident I am. I honestly cannot recommend it enough, the recovery is pretty tough but it is so worth it in the end! X

I'm so glad you decided to share your problems. I've struggled with weak teeth and grinding my whole life. The constant anxiety of something happening and if it will be a major expense or surgery is so terrible. My dentist as a child/teen never offered me braces and now I'm in my 20's and I'm told it may be a must. You're not alone! Xx

I had both my top and bottom jaw broken and reset when I was 22 and at Uni, along with braces to correct an underbite. Not gonna lie it was painful but definitely the best thing I could have done. I could never chew meat properly and had lots of issues and since then everything is perfect! Recovered really quickly and no lasting negative effects at all. I have an almost 1 year old boy and we always joke about him getting my new jaw and not my genetic one! (I found your videos while we were both pregnant and love following Delilahs progress along with my son Elliott's!) X

My sister is 28 and just had jaw realignment as she had an underbite and a squint jaw. It caused her jaw ache and she couldn't bite down on anything properly. After the surgery her face did look swollen and sore but she said pain medication helped a lot and it's the best thing she's ever done for her confidence. She has 2 little children as well and managed fine as she had her partner to help. Now it's like 3 months later and she looks amazing! She had braces on before and after the surgery but you wouldn't even notice them now x

I have jaw issues as well and here in America I found an orthodontist who does this treatment to avoid surgery called a TAD assisted expander of my jaw. Four screws placed in my palate with an expander attached and I turned the expander twice a day for four months and it SAVED me from having double jaw surgery. I have Limited migraines now from my cross bite and I'm onto braces. My jaw was not as bad as most people and while I'm older than most who get this treatment it worked on me! I encourage you and anyone to get the surgery OR alternative treatment whatever needs to be done because my quality of life has gone way up. My migraines would leave me in bed for days and my bite was so bad I couldn't properly bite from the front so things like sandwiches, burgers, pizza, anything bite bite sized would be so hard to eat. I'd have to cut them with my tongue against my upper teeth because my teeth didn't align l at all. I mean it's something to seriously consider and I encourage people to get two opinions because 6 months ago my only option was surgery and now there is a 90%i won't need any type of surgery. However, if I needed the surgery I would have 100% gotten it because being able to eat and not getting debilitating migraines is worth it.
@RhiannonAshleeVlogs7 жыл бұрын
+Skallia Ray completely feel you with the not being able to bite into sandwiches properly.. I've always had to use my tongue to help too but half the time the whole contents will just be pulled out of the sandwich/off the pizza (whatever I'm eating). Glad I'm not the only one!

Rhiannon Ashlee Vlogs It really does change everything when you have issues with your teeth and jaw. I had migraines for years without connecting it to my jaw until I was around age 20. My jaw clicked as well and my teeth are straight for the most part like you and it has changed my life getting it all sorted out. While having braces at 25 is not fun and I look even younger than I normally do l (lol! I usually get pegged for age 15, but I'm now getting age 12) I wouldn't change it. My jaw pain is gone, the clicking is minimal and I am starting to eat normal for the first time since I was probably around age 10. If you are able to do it, have some help with Delilah, it will be sort of life changing not to sound too dramatic.
@tany1977 жыл бұрын
i actually had a similar experience - but I was still quite young, so I don't properly remember how it was before my jaw was fixed ;) my upper jaw was too small & I got it expanded with a similar treatment. my lower jaw on the other hand was growing way to much/fast, so I had to wear a contraption that held my lower jaw back ( looked way cool in primary school, let me tell you). unfortunately I still suffer from migranes, but at least it saved me from getting teeth pulled or having to get jaw realignment surgery. I was really lucky that my doctors/ parents noticed it when I was quite young. For me personally I think it took about 6 years in total for it to be adjusted properly, but then again that was at least 12 years back.

Our mouths/jaw/face heal super quickly as well and I promise it's all worth it in the end

Hi Rhiannon! I had double jaw surgery when I was 16 in addition to braces and a jaw expander. For me it was major, because they had to take 4mm bone off each side and reconstruct/ bring forward my cheek bones. The recovery was really intense, but I'm so glad now (at 21) that I had it. It totally boosted my confidence and I feel more like myself, but it's a choice people really have to make for themselves. Good luck :)

Lovely Vlog! I love your little family. I had double jaw realignment surgery for my underbite 4 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did! I was 18. I won’t sugarcoat it, it was extremely painful. The doctors only provided me with paracetamol and ibuprofen as painkillers. I was so swollen that my parents didn’t recognize me when they came to pick me up. It took around 6 weeks for me to heal completely and for the swelling to go down but I was up and about after 3. Whilst recovering, I was on a liquid diet. The swelling plus the stitches around my gums and cheeks made it impossible to open my mouth. Ice compresses really help the swelling reduce! As a side effect, I have lost some feeling in my lower lip, I don't think that will ever come back now. I had braces on for a year and a half before my surgery and for a couple months after too. After, my orthodontist fitted me with permanent retainers that sit behind the teeth. I'd say the aspect that affected me the most was physical changes, for a while, I didn’t recognise myself when I looked in the mirror. Now I can’t look at pictures of me pre-op without cringing. Despite the pain and all that, I am a lot more confident than I used to be and it has saved me from countless potential health issues. Hope this gives you more insight. xx

I'm so glad you talked about your jaw issues as it's made me realise how my problems are possibly linked!! I too was told a similar thing by my orthodontist when I was a teen, that my jaw was funny and I could have surgery to get better teeth with the braces or not have surgery, still get braces and have them still be a bit funny. Anyway, I didn't have the surgery. About a year ago I developed bruxism and my jaw clicks alot. You mentioning your ears is a lightbulb for me too as I didn't think my ear problems (intense pain on long haul flights through the ear, jaw and cheeks) could be linked to my other jaw problems. Thank you!!

I'm watching this 3 year down the line after finishing my braces treatment and having 2 jaw operations and I can totally understand where you were coming from. Like you I couldn't have them until I turned 16/17, and I'm 23 now and had them off last year. I had ear problems, breathing problems, couldn't eat on one side and had terrible headaches and I'm glad to say that having my surgery has helped 90% of my problems, it's a horrible process to go through and it's uncomfortable but I'm glad I had it done, my jaw is a bit different to yours I had an underbite and ended up having a fair bit of my lower jaw removed! I also had to have 4 teeth out under anaesthetic but I can happily say that a year and 5 months later I'm so much happier! Doesn't help that I used to get the piss taken out of me because of how my chin stuck out but hey ho haha. Only thing is that one of my plates was causing me some pain and ended up having it taken out but touch wood that's the only thing that's happened, and as for getting the feeling back in my chin/jaw area I would say I've got 80% back, I only ever notice it when it's really cold because it feels like pins and needles 😂

I have similar jaw problems too - I was offered surgery when I was 16 but I moved and never followed it up. Now I'm 21 and currently going through the process again, I'm getting my moulds done this Friday. I've also had problems with my ears, sometimes if I open my mouth too wide I get a horrible sharp pain followed by ear ache. Also I think my jaw problem has caused an imbalance of crystals in my ear, making me have symptoms similar to vertigo as well as motion sickness, which I heard you mention getting in the previous vlog after being on the train. xx

Jaw problems are the worst I defintely feel for you! I suffer from TMJ (Temporomandibular joint syndrome) which is caused by the misalignment of your jaw and it sounds similar to the problems you are experiencing. It gives me the same clicking/popping, occasional pain, and ear problems... I go to a chiropractor/physical therapist for treatment and it really helps! They do massage and some other adjustments....You might want to look into it!

I had problems with my teeth too. My baby teeth refused to fall out in time. I still had my 2 front teeth when I was 8 years old. So a lot of baby teeth had to be pulled because the permanent teeth were already "ready" to come out. So of course I needed braces. Went through 3 sets of them, 2 more retainer style and one set of braces. I'm glad I went through it all though. It's definitely worth it to get whatever's wrong fixed. I also had what's called an "open bite" which means your front teeth don't touch and there's a gap in between. I couldn't eat properly for years. I was 14 at the time.
@LaurenHardcastle7 жыл бұрын
I grind my teeth a lot! Especially at night and it's only in the last like 2 years that I've noticed problems. I would say I have TMJ because I don't think my jaw is aligned anymore and I can't bite into sandwiches or burgers etc with my front teeth without it causing me pain in my jaw. Even eating things like chocolate really cause me discomfort. I get the clicking sounds and I also can't open my mouth very wide anymore. I haven't mentioned it to the dentist because I'm scared and also because I don't think there is a lot they can do for it. Obvs your issues are different but yeah. When I saw the title of this video I instantly thought wow I'm not alone. And reading everyone's comments has made me feel like I'm not the only one suffering. Sometimes I'll go a few days without any trouble then I'll have like a week or so of discomfort. Xx

I had both my bottom and upper jaw broken and realined in 2010. I had no issues with the recovery or the surgery itself however what I hadn't realised was how long it would be before I ate normally, it was about 6-8 weeks before I would describe my eating as back to normal. I found that hard as it is awkward to eat when out and about as you can't eat solid foods at first, as well as that I physically found the action of feeding myself hard as dexterity is a issue for me. Having said that I saw some pictures of myself before the surgery and the difference is amazing and I have no regrets about having the surgery. My bite is so much better! 😀 You would be fine!

You have made me so happy !! I had sucked my thumb and eventually at 11/12 yrs old I stopped but where I sucked my thumb I pushed my jaw up so now my front teeth don't actually close so I find it quite difficult to bite into sandwiches etc... so at the age of 13/14 I had two teeth taken out and eventually was given braces my teeth were moved as best as they could however my teeth still don't meet at the front and my jaw is still out of place so my dentist sent me to the hospital just to get some x-rays done and they said when your 16/17 come back and we can discuss this further and I'm 15 now but I'm just so worried that having this surgery is going to make me look differently or it's going to go all wrong .... thank you for talking about your past experiences because I now feel a bit at ease and I don't feel like I'm the only one in this world who is dealing with these problems

I needed braces and jaw surgery so I definitely relate to your problems! I live in Canada and it is considered cosmetic here too. I had the surgery at age 16 and it was pretty traumatic for me. I regret not waiting until I was more mature to deal with the hospital stay, face changes and prevent the relapse that I had with a late growth spurt. It's funny how we have the opposite situation. Either way I think it's a difficult thing! xo

I didn't have a jaw realignment (I had an underbite where I couldn't chew without my bottom teeth going over my top teeth, but it was more of a teeth issue due to grinding my teeth when I was young), but I did have my braces put on just before I turned 18, when it felt like everyone else was getting them off! It was a bit awkward but not too bad - nobody ever made comments about it or anything, and I'm glad that I did it whilst it was still free. Maybe contact Leanne Woodful? I remember watching her double jaw surgery back in the day. It might give you an idea of the recovery time/process and everything!

Same here Rhiannon, I have TMJ and I feel the same "pops" you feel. And although both sides of my teeth meet I have a favorite side too cause one of the sides causes me jaw pain when I eat. My mouth wont open at its fullest so I have to cut up most food so I can eat it it and I also started to have ear problems as well as migraine. It's so annoying and I don't know what to do either to solve it. I'm so used to this life that I just let it be but I know it's gonna get worse as time goes by. I feel your pain so much about teeth problems. I had so many operations as a child to correct it :( My sister had jaw surgery twice where they had to brake it and her recovery time was quite quick and she seems much more confident. The only bad thing was she did lose a lot of weight (she went to like six stone) because she could only have very soft food/liquids so it might be worth talking to a specialist about what diet would be best and stuff :)

I'm the same, my teeth grew in late so I was too old for my jaw to be fixed with functional appliances as mine is a skeletal issue, so it could only be fixed whilst I was still growing. My only alternative is surgery so I have braces now and due for surgery in the next year or so! It's mad how much your jaw positioning can affect your health.
@Moffins07 жыл бұрын
I have an underbite and my top jaw is slightly smaller than the bottom. Jaw surgery has been suggested to me since I was about 14. It's not really noticeable because it's only a few mill out and doesn't really cause me any problems, I can eat fine etc, it's more cosmetic. The only thing I've noticed is that my jaw can click while talking/eating, which doesn't sound too nice! For the surgery they would have to break both my jaws and re-align them using screws and plates. I've always wanted to have it done, but have never decided to because of the complications that can happen and the fact I've been told that I wouldn't be able to eat solid food for 4-6 months. I've spoken to people who have had the surgery and have got mixed reviews of whether it's worth it or not. Like you, I feel it would of been better to have had the surgery when I was in my teens, as I'm now in my 20's and would struggle to find time to take months off for the recovery needed for the surgery!

Hi Rhiannon - I'm in a similar situation to you, had braces at age 13 to correct my open and cross bite and it didn't work, so was offered jaw surgery there and then. The thought of breaking my jaw terrified me so I refused. I'm now nearly 19 and my jaws have gotten so much worse 😭 only 1 tooth on my top jaw and 1 on my bottom actually bite down (so I chew on one side of my mouth) and my face has grown longer :(( so I'm now starting my treatment and although I am seriously regretting not getting the surgery when I was younger, I am so excited to actually be able to bite and eat properly haha hope it all works out for you (whatever you choose to do) and there are tons of videos on yt about jaw surgery advice !! My jaw has never been severely bad however I've always had teeth problems which have affected how I feel about my smile and also eating. I had a similar experience with braces, I saw an orthodontist (pretty sure it was the main NHS one in Tunbridge Wells) from the age of 11 or 12. They finally did x-rays when I was 13 as one tooth hadn't fallen out and it should have, it was discovered it was impacted. They referred me to the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead orthodontist department and the maxillofacial unit. Similar to you it was decided I needed to go under anaesthetic for an operation. I was 15 almost 16 and the procedure was to remove the baby tooth and expose the impacted tooth. 8 months later I got braces. My braces were supposed to stay on for at least 3 years. My teeth however moved quicker than they could have possibly imagined and I had them removed after 18 months. This was April this year, a month before I turned 18. QVH was absolutely fantastic and I cannot fault them at all.

I really relate to you, i'm 24 and I have to have double jaw surgery to correct my open bite (no bite at the front at all) :( I had the opportunity to have surgery and braces when i was 18 but freaked out at the idea of having to wear braces for 2 years because all my friends had already been there and done that! (didn't want to be the odd one out)! Now i'm self concious and kind of regret it. But i've said as soon as i've completed my nursing degree and i'm all settled i'm just going to go for it. Good luck to you and any decision you make :) xx

When you said you have problems with your ears when you go into the wind, what happens? When I go outside and the wind gets in my ear, it goes like it's blocked and I can hear myself. I don't think I have problems with my jaw, but I just wondered because it would be cool to know!

I hate windy days. My eyes and nose stream when walking and my ears are so painful on the inner ear part. I also have jaw problems and teeth issues. Biggest regret is not getting braces when I was a teen!!

When I was 17 I had jaw surgery because my jaw tilted down at the front meaning my teeth only met right at the back. The surgery was meant to take 4 hours but ended up taking 8 in the end, which meant it took me just over a month to recover. My teeth were wired together with the help of braces to help it fix itself in place, which meant I could only live off of shakes and pureed food (and chocolate buttons that I could just fix through the gap). It didn't hurt but it was a pain and I was quite swollen. However, saying all of that I would go back and do it again in a heart beat. I was always very subconscious of my smile and my face before, i thought it was too long and i looked like a horse with buck teeth. but the operation made me lose about an inch in my face length, my teeth look straighter and it made my nose turn up a little so it wasnt so long and straight. I am much more confident now and actually smile in photos. I am now 23 so it has been 6 years since my operation and the only problem i now have is my back teeth are a bit more worn down than the rest because I spent 17 years using only them to chew, and that is easily fixed with sensitive toothpaste. :)

You're so relaxed about Delilah roaming around unsupervised. I can't do it with my son.

I had double jaw surgery in January 2016 and although my jaw is a lot better than it was before surgery, it still isn't what I had hoped for and I'm still left feeling really insecure just like beforehand.

I was offered jaw surgery at 16 and decided to go against it. I'm 21 now and last year I went back to hospital to look into it (I can only eat on one side like you). I was meant to have braces put on this July just gone but the orthodontists actually talked me out of it because they said my case was not so severe? Now I'm worried I'll end up with problems further down the line and will regret not going through with it for the SECOND time. It's just such a massive procedure and I questioned again if I really wanted to be 21 with braces, potentially starting a Masters in 2018.

I really want to have double jaw surgery for cosmetic reasons since my side profile looks just really off. But right now I just don't have time for it, even though specialists told me I should get it done since I was 16. I say, if you feel like it's going to improve your health situation and maybe just to feel more confident, do it now. I regret not getting it done when I had time... anyways, great vlog haha, keep it up! xx

I started noticing a blocked feeling in my ear during pregnancy and couldn't figure out why as the GP couldn't see anything there. I recently went to the dentist and he said I'd been grinding my teeth so much that I've worn away and damaged my bottom front teeth. I hadn't even noticed. He said it was TMJ and it was causing swelling in my jaw and it all clicked (sorry, no pun intended!) My teeth grinding is causing my blocked feeling in my ear and also migraines which I have started getting frequently. My pregnancy was a bit stressful and that's probably where the teeth grinding started and now I notice I do it all the time. Even when breastfeeding I clench down and when I'm concentrating! Even doing it now, argh stop! I notice I also do it when rushing around to make sure I'm in routine with my little guy, it's become a bit of a habit Wonder whether you're noticing it more for the same reasons. Still loving your vlogs and watching Delilah grow, she's a couple of months older than Ardan and it's great to see what he'll be up to soon x

I'm in the process of finding out in sept if I'm going to need the surgery, I have severe overbite so I can't bite into things properly like an apple and because my jaw isn't aligned my jaw muscles are overworked so you can see the muscles enlarged on my face, also my chin Is shorter too. I'm really scared as I've got 3 kids and the recovery time puts me off too. I've watched to many recovery videos on KZbin I think lol...Hope you get it sorted too xx

I'm 22, and have an open bite so jaw surgery has been potentially on the cards since I was 13. After spending a lot of time on waiting lists at 3 different hospitals, I've decided no, but I'm going back to the consultant soon to discuss other options like removing teeth to improve my mouth without taking a drastic step such as surgery. I hate dental stuff and I'm a wimp with pain! My consultant also told me that there's a chance that my jaw could swing back after the surgery, that there's a chance of permanent numbness, and that it might actually make very little difference to my facial appearance/bite/slight lisp. Also, she said that without surgery my mouth won't get any worse. I guess it's different for everyone! Personally I didn't think it was worth the pain and the interference on my life, but I know a lot of people say it is worth it. Tricky decision, so I'd say get as much info as possible, and if you can then get different professional opinions. It wasn't until I met a different consultant who told me that my bite isn't very severe compared to most, & that my face looks totally normal, that I began to question the surgery. Previously, the consultants I'd met didn't question me about my choices at all, it was just a "given" that I'd have it done. It helps to honestly look at both sides. Hope that ramble was helpful in some way!

My sister had jaw realignment at 18, she's now 21 and she says it's changed her life. It was abit scary seeing her immediately after the surgery and I helped her with medication and stuff once she came home, but the end result looks amazing and most importantly she feels so much better. If you have any questions I can ask her and let you know xxx

I actually had braces and jaw surgery. I had a bad under bite and was always so self conscious about talking and it caused me pain. My jaw started clicking when I would talk and the doctors told me if I didn't get it fixed, it would cause me to have arthritis in my jaw as I got older. Braces honestly aren't that bad, I had the ceramic ones so they weren't as noticeable because they looked almost clear. The jaw surgery wasn't horrible like I imagined it would be. It did hurt (obviously) but not too bad and the main reason it hurt was because they also removed my wisdom teeth at the same time. The worst part for me was not being able to eat solids. I love food and it took about a month to get back to eating regularly. It was definitely worth it though and I would do it again. It made the pain go away and I feel more confident with my looks.

I've always had quite straight teeth, and at the age of 15 I went to the orthodontist because my brother had braces, only visiting with him, and ended up in the chair with a straight diagnosis of, you need braces. Essentially one side of my teeth was being worn down because the other was slightly lifted- quite similar to your issues. I had the braces for a year and a bit and it completely changed my face shape, I went from having quite a small round face to a long more oval shaped face. The thing is with it is that because I had it so young at 15, after they were taken off my teeth continued to move about even with a retainer and I essentially still have the issue of my teeth being worn down, except now I have a visibly wonky jaw to match it, which has obviously caused confidence issues as I grew up- I sort of wish I had never had the braces but when I was so young you can't really say no either! I have continued ear and balance issues as well, related to my jaw too. The surgery would most definitely fix the issue but i'd say the braces wouldn't be completely necessary from my point of view X x

I've got a similar jaw problem, I'm 18 and about 2 years ago I changed dentist and the first check up I had they were concerned about jaw clicking, I had noticed the click and slight pain and how it could lock but I assumed it was just normal, last year I was sent to the hospital and they assumed it was muscular but decided I needed an MRI to double check, had the MRI and straight away they noticed my jaw on both sides has been grinding away in the ball and socket joint that connects the bottom jaw to the top, it is basically flat on the one side, they have told me there's nothing to do because I'm too young and it could raise chances of getting arthritis and it might not work, I only have a splint/retainer which is difficult to wear but does help, hope this story helps xx

Hi! I can totally relate with your story! I should say that doing the surgery is a good thing and you will feel so much better after words. I can understand that it's scary to do the surgery but it's only for the good. I had braces since I was 11. At the age of 13 they told me that they saw some problems with my upper and lower jaw and that they were going to try to fix it by adjusting my braces but it could potentially end up in surgery. So I wore my braces for 8 years. 8 YEARS! And got told that I had to have the surgery otherwise I wouldn't be able to speak, eat and be in a lot of pain by the age of 30. So I decided to do it, and had my surgery last year in august. They ended up doing an upper jaw osteotomy and chin osteotomy. Which basically means they cut my upper jaw and chin with a small saw to allow it to be broken in a controlled maner. It is then moved into it's new position and held in place with small metal plates and screws. And it's the best decision I ever made in my life. Recovery wasn't painful just uncomfortable because my face did swell quite a bit and I had to go on a liquid diet. But once the swelling goes down (by approximately 6 weeks) you have no discomfort at all. So I strongly suggest to do it. You will be thankful later. (sorry for the bad English, I am from Belgium and normally speak dutch) xxx Kirsten

I have the same problem. And sometimes my jaw gets "locked" and I have to open my mouth and the it makes a nasty cliking sound. The dentist says I need braces..but I am 26 😫 Wish they would have told me sooner. And also since I have this problem my chin in small and my jaw is crooked. AND I have trouble with my ears when it is cold :o I am working to save up money to fix it, even tough it will look wired to have braces when I am this old, it will make my life better :) So yeah you are not alone :)
