All her life, Denise Lim has always been a standout student. With seven 'O' level distinctions, four 'A' level distinctions, leadership positions in school, scholarships (Amcham and MFO Duo-Exchange fellowship), Dean's List honours, and a Magna Cum Laude degree, Denise’s career-as the saying goes-was made in the shade.
Her heart, however, always lay with making a difference in others’ lives. And joining SMU made this clearer to her than ever before.
As an SMU student, Denise scaled Mount Kilimanjaro with boys from the Singapore Boys’ Home and spearheaded a community service expedition to Kolkata, India-all the while maintaining her stellar grades.
And despite landing a high-paying job after graduation, she chose shortly after to start afresh in Xela, Guatemala, with no knowledge of Spanish and no connections. Today, Denise owns three social businesses in Xela-businesses that not only give back to the local community, but serve to forge links between Latin America and South Asia.
Watch on to learn more about Denise’s inspiring journey, and how SMU played a part in helping her to crystallise exactly what she wanted out of life.
