I myself have a stutter ever since I was 4 years old and I commend you for your bravery and having the ability to openly talk about it on camera. Thanks a lot for sharing this video with us.

Appreciate your courage. I'm fluent in speech most of the time except when I get nervous or in uncomfortable situations .I'm still coming to terms with accepting my stutter, even at age 51. Keep up the good work

You're truly an inspiration and so brave! I can definitely relate to what you're saying. I'm 32 and my fluency has been a rollercoaster as well, but most recently it's really bad and comes with anxiety. I have facial tics and repetitive sounds and I want to be able to speak like you!

Hi Courtland, I'm an SLP in training and currently taking a stuttering class. Thanks so much for your perspective! You have great eye contact throughout the video and show amazing confidence. I hope to help others work through these complex emotions as an SLP! Also, one of our assignments is to go out and pseudostutter in mulitple situations to understand a little more what it's like- I've been practicing and will go out later. I'm so encouraged that you're becoming an SLP too, that's awesome!

I thought this was a very inspiring video - I am not someone who stutters, but I can very much relate to wanting to focus on emotional aspects and connection rather than fluency and clinical aspects. I hope you're doing well now and that you're inspiring other people daily like your SLP in high school!

Thank you! I'm glad you could relate to it. It's funny how now I work in a middle & high school so I do have that chance to pass on what I've learned and my life experiences to other young people now in similar situations, it's a blessing I'm very thankful for!

I’m currently applying for jobs and am terrified because of my stuttering. I’m literally loosing sleep over it :/ I’ve been fairly isolated most of my life as my family members have always considered my stutter embarrassing (even to the point of leaving me out of family vacations) so I don’t really have any friends to help get me through this, but your videos have given me the closest thing I’ve had to support and friendship.

I'm really sorry to hear about that, some people really don't understand stuttering and the impact that it has on a person, and in turn they see it as a negative consequence. A big mission of mine is to reduce that stigma and start making people realize that stuttering is just something we live with, and doesn't have to be anything negative. I'm glad that my videos have been able to help you! Feel free to reach out with any questions or for advice!

So so proud of u really because u came out from.ur comfort-zoon and show off how you're strong . I'm stuttering also and I suffered from my 9 years to 22 years and i know how much it hurts when people start giving u that strange face expression .... Now I'm strong enough to talk and express about my perceptions ... confidence is the key in addition to stand up for ur self and talk talk talk without stopping

Splendid video! I've had a stutter for most of my life, it's been really bad this past year or so. It gets very frustrating of course. I hardly want to talk or tell jokes. Sometimes when I get stuck really bad, I just shake it off with a "nevermind", and sometimes I come back around and push through, but it's exhausting. Something that's interesting is that the only very consistent times I didn't stutter is when I talked to this woman I knew. I'd almost never stutter with her and she was very easy to talk to in general. Maybe because she was super calm, or because my brain was working in overdrive not to stutter, idk, but it was fascinating to me. Hope you go far!

I’m so happy I found your channel! I was literally considering choosing another major because of the persona to become a speech pathologist means communicating flawlessly. I don’t necessarily have fluent stuttering but I happen to stutter sometimes causing my speech to not be articulated efficiently. You’re channel gives me a huge inspiration! Thank you so much ❤️ has learning any information through speech therapy school about stuttering/articulation ever helped you?
@stutteringslp4 жыл бұрын
That's so great! The field of Speech Pathology was actually founded by people who stutter, so there are no limitations to who can be an SLP and who can not. I haven't learned much yet about stuttering in my undergraduate classes, mostly the basics of what I've been told in speech therapy my whole life. But this coming year when I start graduate school I'll be taking an entire course on stuttering and fluency so I definitely will be learning a lot more and hopefully applying a lot of it to my own stuttering!

Hey Courtland! Thank you for these videos! As someone who developed a stutter in high school, it was so hard to accept myself and my new speech. I started going by my middle name because it was easier to say, kinda like you! It is great to see you accept your speech and gives me motivation for my journey.

Hey Abigail! I'm so glad to hear that you're gaining motivation from this! We definitely have been through similar experiences with stuttering, and I feel that you're on the right track to being aware of everything and accepting yourself!

The main trick is that there isn't one, the best way to stutter less is to be authentic, live as you are, and stop hiding from it. The more you work on your mindset, your body such as working out, eating good, hanging out with people, your speech will follow!
@samlnd774 жыл бұрын
Great video Courtland! Keep up the good work, which one has it been harder for you, stuttering or your tics with tourette syndrome?
@stutteringslp4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Honestly, my stuttering is much more apparent in my life than my tourette's. I don't even pay too much attention to my tourette's all the time. I guess if anything... stuttering has made me not care much about my tourette's haha. Tourette's actually runs in my family, my dad and 2 of my brothers have it, so to me it's always been more 'normal'

Hi Courtland, this is so informative for me, I have a 7 year old son who stutters, and I struggle with what direction to take his therapy. So I’m trying to do both, teach techniques and also self esteem around stuttering. Do you think he is old enough to know what he wants out of therapy? Thank you for what you do and for posting!!
@stutteringslp3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rachel! You've got the right idea with your approach to therapy, exposing him to techniques as well as increasing self-esteem will help him decide what he wants to focus on more as the years come. As a kid at his age, I was only exposed to fluency techniques and never had an opportunity to work on my self-esteem. I would recommend to keep introducing more stuttering support to him (self-help videos, videos of other children his age stuttering, information from the National Stuttering Association (NSA) or the Stuttering Association for the Young (SAY), etc.), and just following his lead a bit! He may be too young to know exactly what he wants to work on at this stage in his life, but it'll lead him to some direction moving forward!

I love your videos! I feel like my stutter has gotten a lot worse lately. I was just wondering if you ever feel as if people look at you weirdly while / after you’re stuttering? I feel as if even my own family does (kind of a look as if there’s something seriously wrong with me) and it doesn’t help my confidence at all. If you do experience something similar, or don’t but have advice for how to stay confident through this, could you please share?
@stutteringslp4 жыл бұрын
Yeah! I've definitely been there too, I've had a LOT of weird looks at me after I stutter. Just today I got a haircut and the barber laughed and said "did you forget your name?" when I stuttered on my name. I simply said "Oh I stutter, it's a neurological speech disorder." I don't apologize or anything, but instead I use these types of situations to inform other people. The rest of the haircut went really great actually and we just talked the whole time. So it's always good to have a positive mindset about stuttering when someone gives you a weird look or says something rude about it!

Did you go right into graduate school from undergraduate? If not, what type of job did you do after after you graduated from undergrad? I'm getting my B.S. in Speech Disorders and was wondering what types of jobs there are for undergrads.
@stutteringslp3 жыл бұрын
Hi Irene! Yeah so I went straight from undergrad into grad school. But several of my classmates took gap years or decided to go other routes. When you graduate with your B.S., a great job within the field to look for is an SLPA (speech-language pathologist assistant). Several of my friends were able to find great paying jobs straight out of undergrad!

Hi Gabrielle, I suggest looking into seeing a local speech therapist (or speech clinic) to have your son be evaluated. They will have the knowledge and proper assessments to make a conclusion on that and assist you moving forward!
