Shawn, like we've been saying, it's a parts bikes of many different models and years. It was built to be a Class C race bike out of various parts. Restoring it as a Class C racer will give it the most culmative value. Anything else will actually lower its value. Hopefully, Wheels Through Time will tell you that too.

This is bringing back memories. In the late '80s to early '90s we were piecing these bikes together while we were stationed at Clark Air Base, Philippines. Once the Australians got wind of it our cheap source for parts got more expensive. My friend Brad put together a '42 WLA that I helped with. That was a fun bike to ride with the rocker clutch and tank mounted shifter.

He's probably been looking for that engine for a while and you two dunces bought one by accident. : ) I was kinda hoping you'd trade engines with him, but you're probably smart to hold onto it for now, especially if you're going down to meet with Wheels Through Time guys. A lot of people here in the comments seem to think you should have gone with this trade but I'm glad you didn't. While this expert seemed to be really straight forward and cordial with you I couldn't help but get an off feeling about the trade. Like others have stated, while he seemed to be straightforward with his knowledge he also seemed to be too enthusiastic for the motor even after he found out that it's not the racing variant that he thought it was. I think you perfectly summed up my reasoning why you should keep the motor at the end of the video. You guys know this hodgepodge of parts works so it's best to get that back together before you start modifying and get stuck down that rabbit hole.

I traded an AR15 that I had "modified" to be full auto for a 1948 WL. It was spray painted all over with a "camo" paint job. Wheels, forks motor, everything. Guy said he used it for hunting. I stripped it and found that it was chrome all over, wheels forks, motor covers. I got it to run, but it had no front brake and the rear brakes are crap. Maybe an inch wide and worn out. The suicide clutch was just that and stopping and starting on a hill was a challenge. Finally I had a near death experience on it when I got on the interstate off-ramp and the traffic light at the intersection changed red. The bike would not stop. I geared down, and down, standing on the brake, but shot out into the intersection just slotting between two speeding trucks. I put it for sale next day and had a hundred guys wanting it. Sold it that day for $1400. I had 500 into my AR15 so I made a profit. That was 1989.

Love that the guy had a good proposition, and although tempting, with any classic restoration for rivet counters it's good to keep it as close to what you started with to hold value. Start putting newer or non matching motors on something will be worth something to some people, but with closer to stock or whatever is on it now will increase the value, especially if it is a special race motor or something that fits the model year better. Just my opinion.

Guys those tank repairs are not that all difficult to do as there is some metal there. I had to repair a rusted out a Roketa DB09, as far as splicing in new material, now that was an interesting task. More like welding up aluminum foil than any task I have ever done, but got it and it looked OEM when finished. Did it because yes the tank wasn't all that expensive to purchase new but it was the old "You can't fix it", and to me that is a dueling level statement.

Right move guys, hang onto it! BTW that measuring Calliper you use is called a Vernier Gauge not a Micrometer. A Micrometer is many times more accurate and has a threaded barrel not a slide.

It's not a vernier gauge, it was a dial caliper. lol

@@graxav Just dial calipers to me. Grew up with a grandfather and a father being master machinists, one for 58 years, the other for 35. Guess it doesn't matter what you want to call it, but hard to find a dial caliper in a catalog under vernier gauges.

Wow this is REALLY EXCITING! I am sooo intrigued to learn more about the back story on this engine and motorcycle as well! I can't wait to see what Matt says down at Wheels Through Time! Thanks so much for sharing and I'm glad you were smart enough to hold onto the engine you already have. I have a feeling it's a lot more valuable then the guy led on as well, otherwise he wouldn't have been in such a rush to make you an offer for it! LOL

Just a bit of advice for next time.... soak your spray can in hot water from the tap for about 10 minutes before using. They are temperature sensitive and will not spray and tends to clog up in low temperatures.

If it was me personally I would not do the trade. The bike is already a cool hard to find bike and having a even rarer motor in it makes it that much cooler. Coming from a racing background it fits in with you as well. Id have someone who you can trust not to rob parts off it help you rebuild what you have.
