Harley engines are crapola. Maybe these old engines and bikes are cool for the time, but it’s down right amazing how Harley continued with their piss poor design for so long. How great is it when you can walk in with a motor, watch as the mechanic tears it down (right in front of you) and get a running commentary on the tear down. All in the span of one day. Priceless. If I take my bike to the shop, I treat it like it's a little kid being left at school for the first time. Many of us have had dads who got deference because of their strong personality, experience and knowledge, and they started the business, so they ran the show. As time wears them down, they become more agreeable and patient, and the torch slowly gets passed. The best we can do is give our kids all the tools they need to thrive when we're gone. And Dale has certainly done that.

You guys are 'old school' bikers and I'm loving it! Back in the day everyone worked on their own machines and HAD to or they'd not stay rideable. When Honda was trying to expand the market in the '60's they introduced bikes to 'consumers' who bought, rode but couldn't work on them...much as we have today. Anyone at the mercy of a dealership mechanic isn't 'getting' what it meant to be a biker. I know people who love to ride but can't fix their own bikes...and I'm always encouraging them rather than taking the bike to another mechanic....invest in the tools and DIY! This Harley you have is a different animal and good on you for finding someone who knows the minutia and history to give you a hand. Harley's are their own breed of cat and there's lots of specialized knowledge that you need to have to do a good job on them. Will be interesting to see where you go with this build!
