i have had keratoconus for atleast 5 years now and u are a warrior compared to me to have go through all this. tho i have struggled with depresion cus my keratoconus and i have never been comfortable with the hard /rigid gas lenses i got for my keratoconus. so even if i had not as severe case as u, my life has been greatly affected by this eye condition. thankfully, i have somewhat of a mild case. cus currently i have some soft contacts and they are far more comfortable and vision wise they work almost as good on me as the rigid ones. but yeah, i have imagined if i needed a transplant sometimes. i have visited many eye specialists before i got my first contacts and one told me i needed a transplant. this condition changes over time and it can "get better" or "worse" i guess....glad u are making some positives out of this extremly negative eye condition.

What an encouraging video for all. I have had keratoconus in my right eye for over 20 years. Was wearing gas permeable lenses but now it's worse, so I've been keen to go for DMEK. I have been scared about blindness at times but not so much about surgery. Love when you said "you aren't alone". Means a lot to me. I heard recently that if we had infrared eyes we could see the rings around Neptune! Technology will only improve for this crazy disease. Surgery sounds worth any recovery pain. Thanks 🧐

I’ve just had a corneal transplant 6 days ago (Tuesday 6/14/22). Ummmm, they called me Friday afternoon, and said they detected a bacterial infection from the host. So, another eye drop, making it four eye drops with an additional gel like substance (so, 5 meds) four times a day. I’m doing great! I have no pain and my eye is looking great. So far, I think this is the best decision I’ve ever made. Thank you, Dr. Gross, in Phoenix, Arizona. You ROCK!!!

I have keratoconus myself and my left eye is scarred and more damaged. I have an appointment for this month sn depending on the situation, I may need a transplant surgery to. Vision is really bad. Honestly, I’m actually scared but seeing how positive you were, I’ll probably do fine. After watching this, I legit had a panic attack! I’m okay now but hearing people’s pain or whatever makes me sick to my stomach. Hopefully doctor doesn’t mention a surgery but if it’s needed then I have to. Thanks again for sharing your experience

I was diagnosed with kerataconus when I was in the early 80s when I was in my mid 20s. I wore rigid gas permeable contacts until my corneas got so thin they were in danger of rupturing. My cornea surgeon said he had not seen thinner corneas. I had my left eye done October 2003 and my right April 2005. I was very lucky that I had a friend who was an ophthalmologist who put me in touch with a cornea specialist who was the head of the ophthalmology department of a medical school near to me as well as the director of the regional cornea bank. I never had any problems or pain other than when a stitch would break. I would not hesitate to do it again, if needed.

I also have keratoconus. I hate wearing contacts. My eyes are very prone to getting bloodshot red from the contact lenses compressing the blood vessels in the eyes. People will think I am high on something or very tired. We do suffer in silence. People with perfect vision and healthy eyes should pray everyday for that huge blessing.

Thanks for sharing. I've had very similar experiences with KC. Especially the walking into the door frame part ;-) I'm 53 and was diagnosed 13 years ago. I'm lucky in that my right eye can be corrected to 20/20 with a lense, but I've had to have a lot of surgery on the left eye...which hasn't really worked...yet. Everyone needs to realize this process can take a VERY long time, and results are not always guaranteed. For me, things began with LASIK 5 years ago. That didn't work, so after I'd healed they tried a corneal transplant. I then had to have additional eyelid surgery because the corneal surgery damaged the eye muscles. Five years later, and I've only just had the last stitches taken out of my eyeball. The vision is still poor (20/80), so they are scheduling another round of LASIK and eyelid surgery for me. It's been a long (and you know how painful) process. My advice to anyone considering surgery, do NOT get both eyes done at the same time if you have at least 20/40 in one eye. Blind in one eye has been annoying. Blind in both would be a helluva lot worse.

Hi Ashley, not sure if you will see this message I wish i had seen ur video a year or 2years earlier. I'm 28 this year and just went for my second corneal transplant for the left eye. I had went for my first corneal transplant on the right eye on 2018. I was diagnosed keratcornos at age of 19 and i was using the hard lens. It would drop off all the time & i stopped using it. Fast forward 7 years later my vision got worst and i had scars (conean tear). It got me very depressed. The numerous times of going to hospital coz of the swelling. And going back to hard lens was making life so hard. Finally the transplant was done and i had a partial transplant. (4 layers was removed leaving the last layer of mine, this gives more chances of having less rejection). And now fast forward i just had my left eye cornea transplant done. The experience is always scary and painful but it def gets better. I have 2 stitches left on the right eye. The sad part of it is not many people know or understand this condition so to them it would rather seem stupied or disgusting to have stitches ard the cornea. I would ask those people to google up and not make fun of conditions that u do not know of. And for those who are going through it ,or have already been through the transplant we are warriors and we have come across it Yayy!!! :)) and it will get better.

Watch DMEK on you tube. It shows this thirty minute procedure in detail. It is not gross or painful just educational. The donor tissue comes from a dead person who was loving enough to give the gift of sight to someone who would otherwise go blind. Recovery time is quick and awesome to see again in high definition.

Thanks so much! I'm thinking of getting a corneal transplant because I too have keratoconus and I cant explain how colossal the effects have been on me, I had a normal life and I just want everything back. Just want to know how much it costs usually haha, I have no clue and my optometrists haven't really touched on it Just let me know if you can

I'm afraid I'm going to do the same. It's impossible to wear the hard lenses. Hopefully I'll be as happy as you after the procedure. Tks for the video. 😉

I’m so happy for you!! I’ve had cross linking surgery and might have to get a transplant too and I’m terrified. The cross linking surgery was SO painful and I’ve had a few scratches and tears on my cornea and the pain is unbelievable so the fact that the surgery is painful just makes not want to do it. I don’t have to yet but it’s most likely in my future. Thank you for making this video, it did help even though I’m still a bit scared lol ❤️

Cross linking is a uv light and eye drops? It’s painless. Uncomfortable, yes. But normally painless.
@lisastern73312 жыл бұрын
@@LancelotVantuyckom maybe that’s your experience. Many others like me found the surgery to be extremely painful. Your opinion is your opinion but try not to invalidate someone’s experience just bc you haven’t had the same one :)
@LancelotVantuyckom2 жыл бұрын
@@lisastern7331 normally the procedure is painless. I commented not because I wanted to discredit your experience but because something isn’t right when you endure pain during these minor invasive surgeries. No malicious intent. Stay safe, Lisa. Hope you get better.
@LancelotVantuyckom2 жыл бұрын
@@lisastern7331 I was wrong, looked it up! I apologize. You had a different procedure than I had. The crosslinking you had was epi-off crosslinking where they scrape off the front part. This is indeed a painful procedure but much more effective! I am curious how your progression is now. How is it holding up? good luck!
@lisastern73312 жыл бұрын
@@LancelotVantuyckom no worries, I appreciate the clarification! :) My eyes have been pretty much stable since I had the cross linking, small variations only. I have to use hybrid contacts though, which are uncomfortable but help me see much better! Thank you :)

This was so helpful to me! Thanks for the tip about the neck pillow too! My husband's scheduled surgery is this coming Monday.... Question for you? Are the stiches taken out weekly, monthly? How does that work?
@ashleyrodriguez91617 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad i was able to help :) Hope all goes smooth and well for your husband and that he has a speedy recovery! The stitches started coming out after 4 months and it was 2-3 every 2 months after that. I'm past a year already and I still have 5 stitches left. I've talked to some people that had all stitches out before a year and others after 2 years so I think it just depends on the person and doctor.

Guys go get CXL done asap. Also before you do get CXL double check if you are a good candidate to get kerarings or intacs before CXL. Then wear contacts or glasses for 6 years. After that 6 years continue with glasses or contacts your whole life, or you if you wish ICL is an option. It is an internal implanted comtact lifelong but there is a 1% chance of retinal detachment later in life. It is an option, explore with your eye doctor if you are a suitable candidate. Go private doctor of you can.
