Your unending disdain for Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle never fails to entertain. Also, it's a shame that the creature designs in Beast Master are wasted on such awkward controls. They look like they had some real effort put into them. That same sort of effort is also present in the sprite work of all the licensed games here as well. It's always interesting to see when these older games manage to absolutely nail the look of the thing they're licensed from, and then proceed to have no other redeeming qualities. You have to feel bad for any developers that were forced to churn out stuff like that. Ah well, the more material you have to make videos like these, the better.

I'm actually glad that Alex Kidd was retired after the Sega Genesis was released, since most of the games he appeared in weren't that amazing, and he was also rather ugly-looking the way he was depicted in the US box art for "Alex Kidd In The Enchanted Castle", which makes me happy that Sega went with Sonic The Hedgehog, who was much more appealing. :P

I was surprised to see Toki, honestly. It was a childhood favorite of mine. Sure it wasn't close to the likes of Sonic, Ristar, Rocket Knight Adventures, Castle of Illusion, or Dynamite Headdy but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It was definitely a slower-paced trial and error platformer, but that is what the arcade release was as well. It was a pretty faithful port (better than the NES version). You did die a lot, but it was one of those games where you just had to accept the challenge and learn the game (like Ghouls 'n Ghosts). There are far worse platformers than Toki. Apparently, Toki was popular enough to even get a modern remake a few years ago on modern consoles, so I think Sega Lord X may be in the minority here. 😅

Toki has to be one of the most divisive Genesis games out there. A lot of people love it and a lot of people can't stand it. Personally I'm in the "love it" camp despite not having grown up with it. Not every platformer needs to be like Sonic, and one where you have to methodically plan out strategies for segments you encounter is oddly refreshing. The game is notoriously difficult to beat though, even on the Normal difficulty, and beating it on Hard is something I still haven't done to this day. I'm surprised you didn't mention that, for whatever reason, the caves music that plays on the first stage is used for about 80% of the game. I can see that quickly getting on some people's nerves, especially if they don't like the track.
@philmason96533 жыл бұрын
It's amazing to look through the EGM archives and see some of the wild takes they had back then. Like, they absolutely murdered Herzog Zwei (lower avg than China Warrior, guys? Really?) and things like Hard Corps coming away with mostly 7s. Their Genesis reviews weren't so bad overall though. I think they might have had more misses with the TG-16, lowballing all-time genre standard bearers like Soldier Blade and Devil's Crush. (Ordyne deserved better too, dangit).

You're entitled to your opinion, but 17:00 was an instant reminder of what I loved about Pac-Man 2. If you want a traditional Pac-Man game, you'll be disappointed (and in that case, play Pac-Man Arrangement on GBA for a real sequel). If you want to make progress through the game in a quick and orderly way, you'll be disappointed as well. However! If you liked the old Hanna-Barbera Pac-Man cartoon and are sadistic enough to take great enjoyment from subjecting Pac-Man to all kinds of pain and suffering, here's your game. It's fascinating to watch Pac-Man's emotional range, which varies from inconsolably depressed to euphoric to hopping mad, with rare bouts of total insanity. (Hint: make him eat a caterpillar. He'll be in a psychedelic haze until some slapstick comedy snaps him out of it.) Also, Zoom wasn't great, but it's on my Genesis Mini anyway. It's one of those "turn off your brain and burn away some free time" kinds of games. And "come on, boy" was probably a better choice for a sound sample than the profanity Zoom utters whenever he outlines multiple boxes in the Amiga version.
