Batman Forever was literally built on the same engine that Mortal Kombat used on the Genesis. They used fighting game engine for a platformer.

What is wrong with Batman Forever? I relaly see 0 issues with the game. I enjoyed it a lot in 90s and still play nowadays on my Miyoo mini and still feel great! Graphics is nice, combat system is rich: you can kick, throw from a platform your enemies, kick they heads when you'r in between. You guys probably do not learn how to play this game in the right way. Read the manual or something. Give this game a chance once again - it is amazing. One of the best games on the platform.

You can actually shoot out the alarm on the outside of the house! Without the alarm the T1000 doesn't show up and the level is a lot easier (and more importantly: quieter!)

In 'Fantasia' you're mainly meant to jump & bounce on enemies. Not so much shoot them w/magic - altho you can do that too. The main problem w/the game is the level design & especially its collision detection. That's why it's so bad.

I was one of the first to get to play a demo of it at a Future Entertainment Show, it was the PC version and it was awful and a guy, that I assume was a developer, said to us something along lines of "it's still a work in progress and the final game will be spectacular". The final game looked and played exactly the same. There had been zero change at all. Like they hadn't taken notice of all the negative feedback we'd stated.

I wonder which would win, Rise of the Robots or FX Fighter. I remember I had Virtual Fighter Remix already on the Saturn and a guy at work was talking about FX Fighter on his 486 PC. It was like 6 frames per second and VF Remix, while not some kind of masterpiece, was clearly better in every way. I think FX Fighter is the 3D equivalent of Rise of the Robots.

all criticisms of fighting masters are largely accurate but i have to admit, i loved playing it back when it was one of the only vs 'fighters' available to console gamers. its more of a 'wrestling' game than a fighter. the devs had to reconcile building a move set for the characters with the constraint of a 3 button controller. you really have to read the manual to understand the game mechanics, then it makes more sense. you have standing and jumping attacks that either stun or knock back your opponent. a stun attack allows you to grab and perform a grapple move that piles on damage by hitting multiples of times. some grapple moves fling the opponent at the walls or floor to add additional damage. it becomes really intuitive once you get use to it. fighting game devs these days can and do make use of only a few buttons because auto combos are so prevalent, but back then no one really knew what they were doing.

Surprised that Brutal: Paws of Fury didn't make the list. I like the concept of learning your moves as you progress through the game. Kind of like an RPG. But the problem is that the computer A.I comes at you with all guns blazing, throwing specials at you left and right while you try to counter with just punches and kicks, giving you no chance to beat him, much less learn a new move. Which is totally unfair and not unlike an old RPG in which you try to fight a boss that's way above your level while you're still stuck at the minimum level. In other words, not fun at all...

I don't know, Paws was okay, just barely. A lot of old games are hard or unfair, which is where game genie and save states come in. Even in Emulators, there isn't much cheat code support past the NES, SEGA, and SNES.

I heard a story once about the development of Bubsy. They got so carried away with all the different death animations, they wanted to show them off as much as possible, which is why everything is lethal, and also why Bubsy has nine lives. I got Ballz for Christmas (heehee!) when it was still current, and honestly even though none of us could get past the first boss (I might have once? Maybe?) we did enjoy playing with Ballz (heehee!). I still quote it almost daily, usually "Administer smackies" when hitting a combo in a game or watching an action scene. So yeah, not a great game, but I really enjoy Ballz (heehee!)

Super Hydlide is by no means a fantastic game... but it is absolutely nowhere near as bad as the other games on this list. When you give it a chance, there's some fun to be had and it actually functions as a game, which is more than can be said for Slaughter Sport or Dark Castle.

6:56 I despise Fantasia so much. It was a game I played as a kid in the 90s... and wanted to throw in the garbage because I realized that the games's mechanics, level design, and music (via pre-GEMS audio) were awful. Play World of Illusion instead. Play Mickey Mania instead. Play Aladdin, The Jungle Book, any other good Disney game from the 90s except Fantasia!

​@GregsGameRoom I owned Fantasia, unfortunately, so it stayed in my Genesis games library for years until I had to give my Genesis away. I also owned Toys, and yes, the game really is bad. The only effect toy projectile weapon is the "Peanut Gun." There were also these "Security Camera" sections that required using a water gun to disable the cameras before getting shot at by lasers. As for the Toys movie, it was... really weird and experimental. Something to do with a toy maker's son trying to save his father's factory from a maniacal uncle who wanted to make weapons disguised as toys. At least, the game got that part right.

As a teen I used to play Dark Castle on the Apple 2 machines at the local library as much as I could. I loved that game. They butchered it on the Genesis, or maybe it was just never that good to begin with - It was over 30 years ago so I honestly can't completely remember. I used to play with a keyboard on the Apple, which I do remember.

I've done a lot of 4op FM synthesis on a module very similar to the MD/Gen, and the games with bad sound and music are basically using factory presets, only sometimes with slight modifications.. TO MAKE THEM MORE TINNY EAR-PIERCING HORRIBLE!

What really hurts about Fighting Masters is the fact that it's a fantasy fighting game that ACTUALLY takes advantage of having a unique and diverse roster of characters, and this is what we got? Fastforward to today, and we STILL don't have a good fantasy fighting game with a roster on this level, mostly because modern man is too busy slapping horns and cat ears on itself and calling it a different species. The only fantasy fighting game I can thibk of that even comes close is Killer Instinct. Honestly, Beast Wrestler gives me the same problem, although there are... sorta other kaiju wrestling games, the good ones all throw in at least one human. Then we got Ballz, which also kinda hurts becayse you can play as a fricken rhino in that game. The only other fighting game where you can play as a rhino is Revengers of Vengeance, and that game sucks too. There's also the MUGEN/Ikeman game Crushing Force, but that's a kink-related game (though the Rhino in that is pretty tame, since she's a muscle-chick rather than being a fatfur, which makes up most of the roster.)

Sword of sodan was an amazing early showcase of the Amigas capabilities, with amazing graphics and sound for the time. The megadrive version should have at least equeled it given the machines abilities instead of looking, sounding and playing far far worse. A lot of these bad megadrive games are st/amiga ports, technocop and t2 for instance. Its like the coders just ported the 68k code and phoned in the audiovisual bits to make a quick buck. I cant think of a single 16 bit home computer port that worked better on the megadrive. I would put that dark castle game at no1 just for the irritating sound effects.

This whole video is like a snapshot of the modern indie/homebrew scene minus any of the good games. And it's representative of about 99% of the modern indie/homebrew games in general, with the rare classic that's as good as Paprium or Xeno Crisis still being the exception imo. But, it helps to have a bunch of games just being chucked out there by everyone, because inevitably there's going to be a gem in among all the rubbish every once in a while. And, to be fair to Genesis, it does actually seem to be getting a decent amount of good indie/homebrew games alongside the trash and the handful of top tier efforts. It's what happens when you basically democratise game creation on these retro consoles. And I actually wish the SNES would get to that stage sooner rather than later too, with tools that are just far more user friendly for people who aren't totally hardcore programmer types. Once that happens, I expect we'll see a flood of crap for SNES too, but then those one or two gems will come out of that as well. And that's the real end goal.

I think Batman Forever is pretty fun, especially with two players. I would swap that for Fantasia or Sword of Sodan. Or Brutal, that is horrible too. Bubsy 2 was reasonable to me too. Last Action Hero is also one I have fun with, even though I never completed it. I like the fighting. So I would swap those out too. Don't agree with Super Hydlide either. But otherwise, I like your video. Most of these games are indeed horrible.

It's hard to say what the definitive worst game is for Genesis; however I'd look at it through the lens of the biggest waste of money for a fifty dollar new game purchase. In that case it would have to go to a underdeveloped and mostly unplayable 2d one on one fighting game like Rise of the Robots. Something that you would pick up once and just be like don't even bother with this. Games like Sword of Sodan were for sure much worse than the magazine screenshots make them look, but you could still push some of the way through it and get somewhere, see different levels, have some diverse backgrounds to look at, not a good game of course but you could at least try to make the most of it and extract some form of value. I did the same with games like Last Battle and Fantasia; majorly disappointing titles, but also not to the extent of ten minutes and collecting dust, on the way to the used game store for offloading. Those two games now do have improvement patches available that bring the playability up a couple of notches and make them okayish.

I owned Beast Wrestler back in the day. You didn't even touch on some of it's awful features. The localization is a feat to behold. Especially considering there's so little text in the game. It could only have been done this way through the lowest possible effort. The "story" mode offers one monster to play as. There's a stat progression system that doesn't seem to do much of anything. Despite your stats being measured in the hundreds. Feedback is non existent and every match feels random in it's outcome. The monster's beat on one another for a while and then one just goes down and loses a point. You can never tell if anything you're doing is effective. Game balance just doesn't exist. Some monsters are just objectively much better than others. There are only three music tracks in the whole game? And the same one plays for every single match. The only saving grace being that it isn't an awful tune or anything. Just kinda mid. The real cream of the crop is a beast mutation mechanic where you can mutate your base monster with defeated opponents. This is an amazing idea for a game like this right? Well you can do it all of twice in a campaign. Picking between two opponents the first time and then with a set opponent that's compatible with your first selection. This makes for a grand total of two whole game routs. With one option being profoundly superior to the other. That's a huge missed opportunity. This mutation mechanic feels like it was a big early cornerstone for the game that got hacked down to a pebble. Maybe a huge branching tree including combinations for every monster was beyond the Genesis. But they could absolutely have scratched together a second set of options. The only saving grace for Beast wrestler is the monster design itself. I understand they were imagined by a designer of some renown back then. Each one is unique and interesting to look at.

Captain Planet is indeed a truly awful game. Play without cheats, and then ask yourself how you're supposed to play without cheats. With cheats, it's just a lame mediocre experience. Without cheats, you'll question your sanity within the hour.v

I Hated Ekk0 the DullFin I had a rich friend who got it as the Pack-In, and speant forever trying to convince everyone the game was Awesome because his mom wouldnt get him another game yet LOL

Strange...Double dragon on the genesis/MD was the best home conversion by a mile it's great,controls are easy to get used to the music is spot on to the arcade original. Ex mutants was incredible,amazing music,atmospheric game world,super tight controls. Both games easily top 20 on the system very strange to see them on this list..
