Jmo okay bro honestly I wasn’t going to reply but I’m getting mad so idk. what would it matter if i could or could not sing all of these songs perfectly? would you tell me i can’t dislike a movie unless i am actively a director? it’s not about thinking ‘i can do this better’ it’s about ‘i didn’t enjoy this’. this video was just some person making a compilation of vocal moments that bothered them. it wasn’t an attack, it wasn’t a critique, literally just someone saying ‘i personally don’t like these moments’ which is a perfectly acceptable thing to do. fyi i never pull this out but i do actually have years of vocal experience including broadway. So yeah some, not all of the notes were a bit off, which is perfectly fine because it’s live music, that’s what makes it live and real and not a studio recording, but the notes are still a bit out and it’s OKAY for that to bother someone! and honestly i don’t even agree with some of the moments that made this list. im just tired of musical theatre fans attacking someone for not liking a particular moment just because they worship the ground a performer walks on. it’s cliquey and i hope that everyone matures enough to be able to accept other people’s opinions and be able to listen even if they don’t agree. We’re all just people who like music who want to share the passion even if it’s revolving around a dislike. i’m sorry if i came across as rude or anything like that, i would actually be happy to share what i think bothered this person in this particular moments that people don’t seem to be noticing

A lot of this has to do with the actors using specific vowel placement so it’s more resonant or just generally more comfortable for them to belt. Some of it is also just really where people’s voices sit and their transition between belting and trying to get their head voice to be the same volume as the notes in their belting range (which also has to do with placement sometimes tbh) I do agree some of it is just,,,,, less than great technique lmaoo but a lot of it does have an actual valid reason when it comes down to it. I guess everyone’s different when it comes to what sounds pleasant to them

Can I just say, THANK YOU FOR CALLING OUT LA LA LAND!! Honestly, as a musical theater buff I left the theater feeling disappointed by the whole "Musical" aspect of it and I get very irritated when people call it "The Greatest movie musical of all time." I just twitch my eye a little and bite my tounge. First of all, anyone calling La La Land the greatest movie musical of all time probably hasn't seen a lot of movie musicals because that wasn't it. Movie musicals like Chicago, Les Mis, Oliver, Annie, Sound of Music, Singing in the Rain, West Side Story, Dreamgirls, Moulin Rouge.. etc all have music that have heart, passion, and SOUL put into them that add extra flare to it them that make the song intetesting to listen to. Second, all of these musicals I just listed actually have a predominant cast of actors that can SING! This is my problem with hollywood making Musical movies today. Instead of hiring talented singers with experience in Broadway, or just musical theater in general, they always go for good actors that can't carry a tune to save their lives. Gosling and Stone are AMAZING actors and I won't take that away from them, but they can't sing. In fact, most of the actors in this movie can't sing. All of their vocals are washed in just lazy and muted autotune. There is no heart put into it. The only professionally trained singer in this entire film was John Legend who made his song sound natural. This cast album is one of the most autotuned washed albums I've listened to. As a movie alone, it's fine. As a musical, it failed in my eyes. Agree or disagree with me, BUT, if this ever moves to the stage or something I hope for it to be better as a musical on stage than what I saw in the movie.

In Barrett's defense her vocal chords went through it after Heathers. I congratulate her for being able to even hit those notes. Edit: Since people are complaining, if you damage your vocal chords 3 years ago (let’s say 2017) they’re still gonna be damaged today. It doesn’t matter how long ago it was, you’re going to permanently be effected. Second, if the vowels sounded like ‘Be me than be with you’ that would just sound.. wrong. Instead of ‘Bay may than bay with you.’ Barrett’s vocal chords *did* go through it after Heathers, you can look up a comparison video of her singing right here on KZbin if you don’t believe me. Also before I get that one comment, I’m not saying that the creator of the video is wrong as this is their opinion (it’s pretty obvious by the title). I just wanted to add my input.

I'd Rather be Me has a D5 in it, which shows that the B4's are still within her range. Paradoxically, it may actually be harder for her to sing 'not that high' notes like B4 if they sit at an awkward transition zone in her voice. I suspect that the issue is that the B4s are sung staccato in a row, and the B4 is close to a passeggio , which would make it harder to sing than one D5
@ZoraTheberge5 жыл бұрын

Okay cmon if you actually do a lot of theatrical singing it is so unhealthy to pronounce it as actually DAYYY instead of something like da-eh. Or MEEE instead of may. Especially when you’re belting. It causes so much extra strain and damages the chords and causes restriction that makes it harder to belt. I agree with some of the stuff on this list but anything about vowels is so unfair that’s just healthy singing
@gaysalamandy5 жыл бұрын
well that’s not like fully true. vowel modifying doesn’t always have to be done for everyone. like, it’s a technique that works well when it needs to be done. and while it is easier to strain if you don’t modify your vowels, it’s not necessarily always healthier. for instance, as long as i use good breath support and keep space in my mouth, i can sing the end of rather be me without modifying and without strain. there’s so much to it besides the vowel itself. it’s rlly fascinating how many moving parts you have to keep in mind to have good technique.

But stating something like 'that harmony is off' or 'someone is pitchy' is just a totally different thing, because they definitely weren't off, but meant to sound that way. It's just a difference between saying what you like about something, and what you don't like and saying something that just isn't true 😅 Anyways though, I get why the person found some of these to be bad moments. A note for other viewers... In defense of most of these vocalists, they're making smart choices for the sake of preserving their voices. Vowel modification is normal and often necessary for healthy belts, that "weird head voice thing" is just twang, how tf else is a male supposed to hit a female soprano note without using falsetto, vibrato at the end of a sustained belt is normal and a sign that the singer is using the healthiest technique possible, etc.. Most of these are all just issues that come down to listener preference, not evidence of bad vocals.

Also there’s character voices in use for some of these roles, which shows a really bad lack of understanding when it comes to acting.

Lexi S. No, it really isn’t, it’s pop punk vowel elongating and is not proper theatrical vocal technique.

Benjamin Foster I’ve taken musical theatre focused vocal lessons for a solid six years and, I guess my voice teacher knows nothing with her masters - that’s always what she’s taught me on high belt notes! That’s how you don’t strain your voice, but everybody has different opinions on vocal stuff. 🤷♀️

0:27 okay first of all, try singing it as a female alto/mezzo soprano. It’s actually really difficult. That’s also why she had to change the vowels a little bit, also because it would’ve sounded WAY worse if she pronounced the vowels normally
@JoshBasit5 жыл бұрын
a lot of these vowels are hard an awkward to belt and hold which is why they sound more like pitchy

Hey so I actually agree with some of these, like the frozen vocals (yuckee) and la la land being too quiet, but I kinda thought from the title it would be like, mostly live vocal mess-ups and some much worse stuff, because there are some realllllyyyy bad vocals you can find out there so I can see why some people were upset I guess?? But It's literally just your opinion though so can't really understand why people get so offended lmao

He Said himself that it is a joke, which means that his “opinion” is not real. Also this whole video is just mean...

@@toshi9206I don't think so... Most of these were actually really valid. In MT, they teach you to place consonants at the very end of notes. So she would have sounded perfectly fine if she didn't modulate her vowels. They "y" of day could have been a millisecond lol. But even then... I could tell that this vid was lighthearted.

I've only seen the first few but I usually cut people slack in these situations. It's usually just a bad day. It's when it's consistently bad that it's a problem.

Annika Svenningsen thank you 👏🏻 glad somebody said it because my interpretation was this person doesn’t know that it’s called being theatrical instead of technical because singing the part isn’t enough to be the part. It’s called being the character.

Oof, I agree. Coming for people's vowel modifications is dumb because they're usually there for a reason
