Guantánamo Bay, and then what? After 13 years, a 38-year-old Palestinian named Muhammad is released from the notorious detention camp, where he was starved, tortured and humiliated. He gets the chance to start a new life in Uruguay, where he’ll get a home and welfare money. He has two years, then he’ll be on his own.
We follow Muhammad, a calm and very devout man, as he goes about his daily life, starting with his arrival in his new homeland and continuing until the end of the two years. He studies Spanish, learns to drive, prays, takes courses, calls his mother, and together with his Uruguayan wife looks for clothes for the baby they’re expecting. He’s resigned as he grapples with the local bureaucracy, but his eyes speak volumes.
At well-timed moments, we hear him talking in voice-over about his traumatic experiences in Guantánamo. Most of all, we see him looking for work, but who will take him on?
Freedom Is a Big Word shows how goodwill can descend into a sense of impotence in this confrontation with reality.

I'm Uruguayan and I can understand when they speak spanish. The problem is that when this poor guy tries to talk in english and spanish at the same time nobody can really understands much of what He is trying to say. I'm under the impression that the producers of this documentary made a very special effort to produce something that nobody can really figure out on what is really going on with this guy. Is this a documentary for "Uruguayans only",whom really know how the politicians work in there?. I will refrain myself to make any more comments on the lack of professionalism of the producers and at the same time I would like to ask former president Mujica these questions : "Did you have only two years,in a different country and culture to catch up and be able to fend for yourself after what this guy ,and yourself, have been trough? Didn't you have enough room in your own house to bring this guy and offer him a decent place to rebuild his life? Couldn't you,in your position as a president, made sure this person could have got all the help he needed?" I'm not surprised at all that the "Blancos"(the most reactionary political party in Uruguay) won the last election. Once again we can see that demagogy plays on all political factions, even in those that pay a huge price trying to change society as we all know. I would had love to make this comment in my original language, instead I decide to do it in my limited english for the benefit of the ones left behind by this terrible production. Greetings from Toronto.

I know Spanish so I will put a summary of what I understood. It shows him looking around for jobs, but either there are no jobs or the jobs require experience, that's when he keeps going to that same office letting them know why he didn't get a job (I think). He mentions he was arrested with other people and was being asked where he was born, he kept saying Palestine but the officer would say he was from Israel. He says where they first took him there were men, women and children. They began to ask him about 9/11 and he then realized how serious his situation was. He says in prison they would humiliate them by touching them inappropriately, letting them sleep for 3 or 5 hours, the food was disgusting. After being released he entered a program with the promise of a job closer to his home, and he wasn't the only one in this program there were others sent to different locations, he tells the guy that it's been a year and he still has no job, the Spanish guys says that he is just mad all this 56:30 . His wife and daughter have to go live with his family since he cannot provide for them, and it ends with showing a ID of when he was younger. Basically what it would be like for anybody coming out of prison I think, just this guy came out of guantanamo Bay prison.

Apparently this man was captured and taken to Guantanamo prison , interrogated by US military and claims he was treated horribly .. now him and other 4 prisoners were forcibly sent to Latin America ( Uruguay) .. it was an exchange between those 2 countries for better trade deals in favor of Uruguay. Now that he is there he can't find a job has married and can't the Uruguayan government promised him that they would help him find a job but is only avious they have failed him . Now he has sent his wife back to Palestine where he is from . He is banned to travel outside Uruguay .

For all the commentators who assume Muhammad did s.th. bad and was taken to Guantanamo: Most prisoners in G. were there because of suspicions. He probably did nothing wrong. I did not watch to the end because I do not know Spanish. But it is clear how he feels. LOST. He longs for his homeland every second.

To be clear, for Suzie and others who watch this, there were people in Guantanamo Bay who were innocent. I don't just mean when people say they're innocent, I mean people who went through the Combatant Status Review Tribunal and were proven to be innocent. Some of them were there for years before this was established. Some are still there. I don't know whether this guy is or isn't a combatant yet, but "being in Guantanamo Bay" in and of itself is not an automatic proof of terrorism.

WOW, The title sounds pretty interesting, but the film is horrendously boring. To make things worse, it's almost entirely in Spanish. And with spanisg subtitles to boot. I actually like this channel a lot, but you guys really missed the mark with this one 👌🏻 Great job. Not to mention, a lot of these particular prisoners don't deserve love when they get out. I couldn't make that call for this guy, cause I didn't understand a lick of the words. But to have gotten 13 years, it must have been pretty bad.

Just watching this video. I would be willing to be that it's his appearance that makes people leery, I'd bet. Once that face comes into focus, the very first place it takes me back to in an instant, is 9/11!! I am not around that nationality, I'm nryot acquainted with the people as a culture, so of course - I feel fear when I see the face, based on my naive knowledge, I can't help but have that image in my mind. I can't distinguish the difference in cultures from those that bombed the WTC (with help from an insider in the USA), and he catches the backlash. Such a shame. He truly does come across as a wonderful person, but I suppose that's the purpose of the video. I certainly do wish him very well, with a dose of less struggles. Why was he in Guantanamo?
