7:03 a little knowledge is a very dangerous thing. Peta in India made an illogical analogy of a Hindu festival "Raksha Bandhan" with killing of cows. They compared to cloth made festival symbol "Rakhi" which is tied to hand to cow leather which is never used. Somehow, they forgot that Hindus pray to cows and treat them as God.

Dude, I'm an Indian Vegan and this video was spot on and to the point. You're a really articulate speaker, and I'm grateful that you chose to go to India and raise awareness. I'm Catholic from Goa (primarily Catholic), and I've had the same irrational arguments and sentiments regarding "Jesus multiplied fish, made animals to be eaten, and ate animals himself...". I use these often: "Do you believe Jesus is the most compassionate being in the universe?" "If that is the case, how can it be that I feel more compassion than God towards the animals? Surely God feels more compassion than I do, or if you're right, you believe in a God who has less compassion and mercy than vegans / vegetarians do." "Why do you fast / abstain from meat for Lent? Does it please God? Why please God for only a month?" "Are you against animal cruelty? Then why are you so determined to find loopholes?" Questions like this invites them to investigate their own contradictions. I try to ask questions and watch them unpack their deeply rooted notions. From my experience Indians have already had the best of Vegan / Vegetarian food, and are no stranger to the delicacies, textures, and flavors; but will still favor meat purely for taste. There's some sort of passive polarization regarding veg, vs non-veg too. Most times even though I manage to tell and show friends and family all the horrors of the industry, it still doesn't register as enough of a reason to give up meat. I can only hope that with social media, as we all have access to the same information, that veganism and it's message becomes more widely recognized. I must say that the ancient Hindi vegetarian lifestyle, was far closer to the Vegan lifestyle. Eggs that were consumed were unfertilized ovaries basically. They weren't selectively bread or artificially modified, and were well cared for. The cows were seen has part of the family, and were shown great love and respect. And the calf would not be deprived of it's milk, but after the calf has fed, the extra is milked, and that is turned to butter, ghee, butter milk and so on. But today with Amul, and factory farming taking over those old respectful practices have become rather extinct.

@@starscream1457Let me tell you something about our Hindu culture. In the Ancient Era, the population in India was growing rapidly despite the frequent widespread diseases. In order to feed the millions of people our ancestors stopped eating beef and used the milk produced by them to satiate the hunger of the rising population. In this sense, Cows are actually our God. We don't eat beef out of respect to the cows. Same goes for buffaloes. Milk has the same nutritional value of meat.

As an Indian vegan my first activism started in Japan. They are very passionate for activism and coming out of their conservative and risk-aversion mindset. They also have an ancient Buddhist vegan diet called "shojin ryori" which has been forgotten by many people and was replaced by beef, pork, coffee drinking habit and other dairy and bakery products when Japan got too much influenced by the west like any other Asian country. One German man also said that he sees more bakeries and sweet stuff in Japan then anywhere else in Europe.

Targeting only Hindu festivals is pretty Hindu phobic. You want to be vegan, that's fantastic, but it is not an indian concept. Iam not denying the treatment of animals in the milking industries. Hindus, Jain's, Buddhists, Sikhs drink milk, that is why I never considered myself as a complete vegan. I have been called rap*st for consuming milk products. Peta is the mountain of hypocrisy, giving awards to meat eating shilpa shetty and then posting condemning hindu festivals because that disturbs animal for one day. This is funny some people bash Hindus for not accepting people of different diets and people like you bash us for letting Butcher shops open.

That is like stubborn fat..its so deep set, that its hard to make it go. As for street foods in kolkata, the options are many - chole kulcha, pao bhaji, samosa, papri chat, bhel puri, phuchka, dosa, uttapam, idli, medu vada, kachori, dhokla, etc, beguni, alu chop, vegetable chop etc. All these are pure veg (most of the time). Ask the shopkeeper for details about the ingredients they have put. If you would want more help with detecting vegan shops near you, kindly install the "abillion veg" App from playstore. There I and several Kolkata vegans post updates on vegan eateries and restaurants or products available in Kolkata (or other cities and states across the world).

India is place of Diversity and Unity. Jains don't even eat Onion and Garlic but they have some of tasiest dishes in the country. We always welcome people with diffrent diet background. Belive me or not me and my frineds goes to pub and diners where some of the our friends are completely vegeterian, others orders Chicken and some others order food like Sushi, Octopus and Squids but we all seat together enjoying our meals without touching someone else's food and that way we don't feel different we feel very close. I think that's the beauty of our nation where unity matters the most. And please not divide everything on Hindus and Muslims. I am a Hindu from Bengal and in our culture many of our rituals consict of eating fish and meat. So The land of India is Full of Diversity where every 50km the Food, Culture, Language and Weather changes. We embrace our differences and love our unity. So Come to India and enjoy the Diversity that you have never seen before. ❤❤

India has some of the world's oldest and original ethical vegetarians. Ahimasa is deeply embedded in Indian culture. Jains drink Milk, and honey. However in many respect they are stricter than Western vegans as they are careful not accidentally kill even insects. Milk Production in India was not up until recent times the industrial dairy system in the west, with baby calves snatched away and turned into veal, or Dairy cows turned to Ground beef when they can no longer produce (This is forbidden, you are suppossed to either take care of the cow when they have stopped producing or let it roam free, not kill it). Now Meat eating is increasing in India thanks to Western Influence. Instead of emulating the positives of Indian culture Indians think everything Western= Progressive and Positive.

Who said cow milk is essential?? It's not essential. You can easily find the nutrients of cow milk in other milks . For example calcium can be easily found in many leafy vegetables. Nowadays even milk isn't healthy . Even milk is processed . Milkmen inject artificial chemicals in cows to increase the production . Cows are sent to slaughter house after they stop giving milk so it is better to drink soy milk , almond milk or cashew milk rather than promoting animal cruelty

Milk, in ancient India was milked from cow & other animals using a very friendly & respectful method. In ancient India, instead of dogs, cow was every family's pet. So milk production was never a problem which made milk and milk products very common & essential part of diet in ancient India. Just as a mother feeds children her milk, cows feeded the whole society and thats the reason cow was given the stature & respect of a mother in our culture, which foolish Westerners & Islamists joke about. Ancient India was a very honourable, highly civilised, and respectful of each and every being including grass, plants & trees. Thus milk consumption during that age was not torture & not cruel as it was milked with respect & motherly love. But in modern world, milk production has been commercialized and western methods of milk extraction has been mass brainwashed as the correct way and the same ideas has been propagated & taught to modern commercialized India which makes milking a cruel and inhuman business. Thats why what was highly honourable , respectful with motherly love & blessings has become a cruel, torturous curse now.... Drinking milk produced in modern Dairy factory is nothing but promoting rape, cruelty and torture of cows and other beings.

Here in india milk is not collected from a factory or something ... Milkmen are themself the owner of the cows and they take care of them individually , we drink cow's milk after the mother and that's why cow's are god for us and we worship them ...

It happens in india too . How do you think cows get pregnant? They are artificially impregnated or a bull is forced to mate and as soon as the cow stops giving milk it is impregnated again . What do you think milkmen do after cows stop giving milk ? They are either left on roads or they sell them to a slaughter house . So don't act like a frog in the well

You should get in touch with Dina Aherne at spiritually vegan regarding the religious significance of dairy... and how it is misconstrued... ghee and sesame oil is the same word in Sanskrit... We use sesame oil instead of ghee in our lamps to Lord Krishna... and offer water instead of milk... Also Gauri Das the managing director of ISKCON Bhaktivedanta Manor is a vegan... he says if you want to drink milk, you must kill the calf Good luck 🙏🙏🙏

U should know that not all ghee is milk based.... In India many vegan households and restaurants use a ghee called vanaspati ghee (or dalda).... Vanaspati ghee is not milk based it is made from hydrogenated vegetable oils like palm oil and groundnut oil.

South India has a great vegan food. We make loads of sweets with coconut milk. N you can usually tell people to not put ghee. They might just assume u have a risk for heart disease 😂😂😂 n here we don’t put cream to curries but we do put coconut milk to thicken it. The thing is while South Indians has more meat eaters, most of them refrain from it for 2-3 days a week for religious reasons and hence meat-eaters also cook delicious vegetarian food.

Well talking about the milk and dairy products, you should visit the villages, where they treat cows like their family member, they collect the milk by their hands(no machines), but after the calf gets older enough to eat the grass..,but yes they do use ox or male cows for the cultivation of the farm field,& they don't feed them at one place all the time, they take their animals (including cows, goats, sheeps) on a walk every single day to make them eat the fields & even if one animal gets far away, they come home on their own.. I'm from Himalayas, but live in city, as a kid when i saw this, i used to get so surprised that how they know where is their home? & When i used to ask people, their answer was always same, "how do you come home on your own after going to market alone? , Animals are more intelligent & have more senses & power than humans".. So one thing i understood is that, The only thing that made humans control every being on this planet is the Cleverness and the technique of manipulation that only Humans know bcz animals (especially herbivores animals) are so innocent, they just live, they don't have Cleverness..

Nice video. As someone who often dreams of traveling in India,, I watched it with great interest. And you covered lots of aspects of veganism in India and you did it succinctly. In certain ways, you dealt my visions of India a harsh reality check. I can imagine myself wanting to embrace the wonderful cuisine, but not trusting it out of fear of ghee. In restaurants it's probably not so easy to make substitutions, and so they just tell you what you want to hear, "no ghee' and give it to you anyway. Maybe that's cynical, but I'd be constantly uneasy about it. And yeah, I already know about Indian food containing tons of creams and milks in them. And the butcher shops with live animals awaiting slaughter would be too appalling. India.... mmm... maybe not. The people seem lovely though.
