The defense was harder in the Bird era. You could hand check legally. Flagrant fouls nowadays were common fouls back then. If you play those defensive rules, Durant would get worked mentally and physically. Saw a story today about Larry Bird, he hit 4 straight shots on a dude, decided to shoot the last 3 left handed and drained it then asked the dude guarding him "Is your Mom watching?"

Bird's trash talk would have eaten KD up. And that is just the mental part of the game. Early Bird (no pun intended) was a force. Everyone looked at the post-broken back Bird and thinks that is how he was. I can't even watch today's NBA because it is a bunch of droopy, lazy, "he touched me" wimps. He says they were lazy in Bird's day? WTF you on boy? They dive for the ball back then, get in fist fights and push and shove in every play! Today's game there is hardly any defense because they have made it illegal and guys just let people run past because they are afraid of getting called on a foul. On turnovers they just they just stop and let it go - that's lazy!

It was beyond talent, Bird always found a way to win when it counted and don't forget he was 6'-9" and only Magic had some of the same ball handling skills that Bird did at that height. Bird & Magic could pass to the open man and make plays that way and that made him dangerous to guard even though you know he was going to shoot 90% of the time. He had triple doubles constantly meaning he was a great defensive player a great rebounder and trash talking is part of defense. He could see the whole court at all times and had an unbreakable confidence.

Something your brother might not really be aware of is Bird's passing. If. A defender looks to be hanging back a bit it likely is because he knows that Bird is just as likely to pass to an open teammate for the score as he is to shoot it himself. That often a player seems to be abandoning his defense of Bird when in reality that defender is trying to deny Bird the ball since that is the only way to stop him scoring at that point. Maybe share a Bird amazing assist video with him, or the Best Passer re-edit video. Loved this reaction video, by the way. When you turned and looked right into the camera - yup - that's what I was thinking too 😄

Bird (and most of the "old heads") would destroy this no-touch, give me space, be my friend, no elbows/shoulders/rib shots league...he would have opponents out of their game with trash talk before TELLING them what he's about to do...then do it to them...they wouldnt be able to stop him. He was 6"9' with a shot release point that is behind his head (weird) so it's almost impossible to block his shot (which was killer accurate). He would also draw multiple people to him and then dime it off to a wide open teammate. Larry the Legend...Basketball Jesus...you don't get those names without earning it....

not only that, but defenses back then were allowed to play a lot tougher, put hands on you, pretty much body slam you in the paint and it was just a tech foul. @Spartan here's a bunch of ammo in case you ever need it in a Bird-KD debate. Bird is not only my all time favorite NBA player, he's my all time favorite athlete. SEASONS Bird: 13 (1979-80 to 1991-92 seasons) 897 games Missed all but 6 games of 1988-89 season due to injury Durant: 15 (2007-08 to 2021-22 seasons) 939 games Missed all of 2019-20 season due to injury AVERAGES Bird: (24.3 ppg/ 10.0 rpg/ 6.3 apg) 59 career triple-doubles Durant: (27.2 ppg/ 7.1 rpg/ 4.3 apg) 16 career triple-doubles SHOOTING Bird: (.496 FG%/ .376 3-PT%/ .888 FT%) 2x 50-40-90 Club (1986-87 and 1987-88) Durant: (.496 FG%/ .384 3-PT%/ .884 FT%) 1x 50-40-90 Club (2012-13) INDIVIDUAL & TEAM AWARDS Bird: NBA Rookie of the Year (1979-80) 9x All-NBA First team (1979-80 to 1987-88) 1x All-NBA Second team (1989-90) 3x All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1981-82, 1982-83 and 1983-84) 3x NBA MVP (1983-84, 1984-85 and 1985-86) 3x NBA titles (1980-81, 1983-84 and 1985-86) Durant: NBA Rookie of the Year (2007-08 6x All-NBA First team (2009-10 to 2013-14 and 2017-18) 4x All-NBA Second team (2015-16, 2016-17, 2018-19 and 2021-22) 0x All-NBA Defensive Team 1x NBA MVP (2013-14) 2x NBA titles (2016-17 and 2017-18) A lot of their numbers are very close to each other, but when you consider that Bird had 59 triple-doubles over what was just 12 healthy seasons compared to Durant having only 16 triple-doubles in what's been 14 healthy seasons shows that Bird was definitely the more complete player. While Durant has a career scoring averaged that is three points more than Bird, Bird averaged double-digit rebounds per game for the first six seasons of his career and averaged under nine rebounds per game only one full season in his career. Durant has never averaged over eight rebounds a game in his career. Bird also averaged over seven assists per game in three seasons and over six assists per game in five other seasons. Durant has only averaged six assists per game one season during his career and has had averaged under five assists per game five times. If you want to look beyond the numbers, here are these three things to consider. Which one was more driven to win? Which one would you rather have the ball in the clutch? Which one made his teammates better to a higher degree? There are solid reasons why one has the nickname Legend. Based on his accomplishments, I think Durant deserves a nick that describes his great play instead of one that's nothing more than his initials, but even with that he isn't on Bird's level.

As we say in the south, bless his heart. 🤣🤣🤣 He’s young. You’re never going to to convince anyone their childhood heroes aren’t as good as they think. It’s not going to happen and I’m not sure it should. That’s special. He was named to the all defense team 3 times. He wasn’t a slouch. Watch one of the videos where NBA players talk about how good he was. Lebron has him in his top 3. He’s the only person ever to win all of the following : College player of the year NBA Rookie of the year (he entered the league with Magic) MVP (3 in a row, only the 3rd to do it and hasn’t happened since) All Star MVP Finals MPV Coach of the year Executive of the year Other misc Founded the 50-40-90 club and was a multiple time member Was one steal away from a quadruple double after 3 quarters in one game. Olympic gold medal All star 12 of 13 years (missed all but 6 games after surgery one season) All NBA team 10 of 13 years All defense team 3 years I’m sure there’s more I’m forgetting. ESPN has him at number 7 and Lebron has him in his top 3 so he’s no slouch. You should check out videos regarding him and Dennis Rodman to get a sense of the times. Basically Rodman, who was a rookie was frustrated and told the media that Bird would only be an average player if he were black. It was a HUGE deal, which Rodman apologized for and publicly regretted saying. That’s one reason Bird didn’t like white players guarding him, he wanted to go up with the best and the common opinion of the time is that black players were naturally better athletes.

It's tough to compare players from different eras. In todays game, the player get three steps to the basket now. In the old days, including Bird's era, that was traveling. Also, players get to palm the ball on the bottom now. That was now way allowed 35 to 40 years ago and back.

I totally agree with you. It is hard to compare because if Lebron or KD played back then they would have adjusted to the physicality of play just like MJ, Bird or Magic would take advantage of the soft play of today so I hate when people say players today wouldn’t have lasted back then because people conform and if the players were reversed we would be saying the same thing so I truly respect your comment because it’s extremely hard to compare. Did I just hear him say on the phone that Larry "Legend" is probably in the "Top 50?" Sorry bruh, but your friend's opinion is even worse than you brother's! That' sad. Magic said Bird was the "only" player he ever "feared!" Please remind them of Bird's stats. Could Durant walk into the locker room at the all-star game 3-point contest, look at everyone else and say, "I'm just trying to see who's gonna come in second!" Then go out and win it? For the third straight year? Yeah, let KD try that! Ask your brother the last time KD averaged 10.0 boards for his career? Along with 24.3 points and 6.3 assists. Can KD pass like Bird did? Bird: 2x 50-40-90 club, 2x Finals MVP, Rookie Of The Year 79-80 season, MVP Voting: 1980: 2nd place Bird 1981: 2nd place Bird 1982: 2nd place Bird 1983: 2nd place Bird 1984: 1st place Bird 1985: 1st place Bird 1986: 1st place Bird 1987: 2nd place Bird 1988: 2nd place Bird with 29.9 pts. 9.3 reb. 6.1 ast. 41.1 3pt % And the only player in history besides Russell and Chamberlain to win the MVP three straight seasons! 2nd All-Defensive team 3x,,, Bird, a small forward, averaged more career rebounds than center Patrick Ewing...Bird was the founding member of the 50-40-90 club. And Bird did everything from 1986 - 1992 with a spine that was out of place. And one last thing. And I heard your brother say that Bird couldn't play in today's game. Seriously? Well you tell him that Bird did all that with players hanging all over him and grabbing his shirt all game? Today's game is a joke compared to back then. If you breathe on someone the wrong way today you get called. You bump someone to hard and you get tossed! Tell your brother I had season tickets on the Boston Garden floor for every game Bird played. He wasn't called "Larry Legend" for nothing! ONE FINAL THING: TELL YOUR BROTHER THAT LEBRON 'S TOP THREE PLAYERS ARE JORDAN, DR.J, AND BIRD!!

Defense was tougher in the 80s than it is now. What would happen to Durant if he got clotheslined back then like Bird did over and over? If Bird played today where you can’t put a hand on someone without a foul call he would dominate. Maybe averaging 35+. Same goes with Jordan.

Did I here that Larry Bird wasn't as all around as KD? Maybe on defense, but on offense, Bird was a better passer, rebounder, and clutch shooter. They both had crazy range and free throw shooting. KD may have been better pure scorer but Bird was more creative. The man scored 47 points (20 left handed) in a game. I'm not saying that Bird would beat KD one on one, but team versus team, they both eating.

Great reaction! All I can say is most opposing NBA players would not want Larry Bird to take the game tying shot...In fact: Most opposing NBA players would not want Larry Bird to take the game winning shot...usually Bird taking the winning shot is bad news. The man was the most cold-blooded assassin in NBA.

Ok so most peoples argument is with how the players body’s looked. They assume that because they don’t look like Lebron they must not be athletic. Bird is 6’9 and Durant is around 6’11. Durant isn’t a fast guy himself. I personally don’t see a huge athletic difference. So it goes down to skill and confidence. People also assume that because they don’t showcase dribbling for 15-18 seconds of the clock, then they must not be skilled. Their is more then dribbling to show a skill level. Bird had great feet work. He worked hard to be in position and to use angles to make a shot and a great pass. Your should show your brother Brian Scalabrine KZbin challenges. He plays high school basketball players that show what most people would think is obvious athletic ability over Scalabrine. Then he shows those kids what NBA skill level really is and destroys them. Scalabrine was at the end of the bench in Boston. He looks like what I keep hearing from younger views saying, a plumber or fireman.

Larry's generation is where the legends came from and thrived in. And for him to be able to run game like he did, he's in the top 5 best ballers. These ballers now couldn't have been able to score on Jordan, Johnson, Malone, Irving, etc. They definitely wouldn't be shutting them down like he did.

Prime Larry Bird would DESTROY the modern NBA. Same with Jordan and a lot of the all time greats. Bird played his entire career with hand checking rules and no 3 second rule. Guys could clog up the paint back then. It was a more physical era. And Bird DOMINATED it. He won 3 straight MVPs. He won 3 straight 3 point shooting contests and FOUNDED the 50/40/90 club. Anyone saying Bird sucks, is overrated or couldn't play in today's NBA doesn't know basketball. PERIOD. Also, if he DID play in modern NBA the medical advancements would have really worked in his favor.

Great channel Recklezz I’m a big fan brother you always do a great job👏🏼Since I went about 10 years in the 80’s without missing a Celtics game and had friends that loved Jordan and hated Bird abrother that loved Magic and hated Bird I’ve had a lot of practice when it’s time to school people on Larry..I’m only gonna teach a few classes because I don’t want people walking out questioning when/where their basketball knowledge all went wrong..first lesson I always use are Larry’s college numbers..so way before his back was all twisted up and the finger on his SHOOTING hand was so broken it was permanently pointing in the opposite direction..ok school’s in session Larry’s freshman year at Indiana St..FRESHMAN YEAR..33 points and 13 Rebounds per game..I’d say try to find me another player that came close to that in their SENIOR YEAR but we’d be here all night..Ok next lesson Indiana State in their history had never even been to an NCAA Tournament but in 1978 Larry’s senior year they go 33-0 until they finally lose to Michigan State and Magic in the Championship..ok next lesson..BEFORE Larry got to Boston in 79 they had the second worst record in the NBA 28-53 in 78..the next season 79 Larry comes in and NOBODY else..just him..and Boston goes 61-21 best record in the league..the next season 1980 Larry’s second season they win the NBA title😂 I’ll save the rest thats only about 1/3 of his career..class dismissed for now👍🏼 🏀33☘️

They don't play defense today. Also prime larry wasn't that bad of a defender before the back injury, he was a better help defender tho. There was no star in the 80s that could hold larry down, he had big games against everyone dominque, dr j, rodman, who won defensive player of the year multiple times, pippen, hof clyde drexler, worthy, u name it. He got in that fight with dr. j because he outscored him 42-6 an told him to retire. He taunted an then destroyed rodman, u can look that up. He abused jordan in the paint, that's why they didn't guard each other, of course he could'nt guard jordan either. He said if your not 6-10 u can't guard me, cause of his high release I'm assuming. From 81-88 in the mvp voting he finished 2nd,2nd,2nd,1st,1st,1st,3rd,2nd, an u could argue he could've won 5 straight. Unfortunatly after that he hurt his back an went from 29 pts a game to 19. They avg about the same amount of points, Larry avg 10 rebounds to kd's 7 an 6.5 assist to kd's 4. The crazy thing is Larry would destroy the league today where they play no defense, an where guys like steph shoot 10 3's a game. Larry only shot like 1 three a game, he said they rarley practiced them an his first coach discouraged them. Imagine Larry chucking 10-12 3's a game, lol. Michael Jordan said Larry was the best small forward an he said he got interupted by someone saying c'mon it's lebron, an then he quickly stopped him an said it larry an its not even close, u guys just don't get it an u never will. I'll leave it at that.

I don't know who does the video's about making the case for the NBA's GOAT. But he explains there are 8 legit players in NBA History you could say was the GOAT. Athletically Bird wasn't in the same league as most of the Black Players. Bird's passing, shot making, Free throw percentage, and fearless on wanting the ball for the last shot is unmatched. But it was the knowledge of the game, and understanding the best players on each team that sets him above most of the elite NBA players during his tenure.

In 80’s the avg 3pt attempts by BOTH teams combined was 6. 6 total attempts per game. Today it is 10x that at 60. Bird shooting 10x as many 3’s would add 5-6 pts per game to his avg. Bird, Magic, Kobe, Jordan all Played hurt and there no game management BS. Today KD or Lebron break a nail and they’re sitting out 3 games.
