FWIW, I think that Starlight is a high-functioning sociopath. Unless somepony /tells/ her, she won't realise independently that mind control is a bad idea because, y'know, it's convenient for HER so, what's the problem supposed to be?

Yeah. In fact, they sort of missed the point in the wrap-up and moral, I think. They were talking about how Starlight missed the point of the lesson and how she didn't realize that she was supposed to be getting to know Twilight's friends as though _that_ was what she did wrong. But ... that was pretty obviously a smaller problem than her falling back on magically manipulating ponies when she's supposed to be breaking that habit. This is not good conflict resolution, Starlight!

Ben Russell-Gough I think you're looking way too into it. Starlight is just used to solvinv problems with magic, so when faced with a situation that was difficult for her she did what she knew: magic. It was clear she was questioning whether or not it was the right decision, but she justifies in an "end justifies the means" type of way. The end being Twilight's lesson.

yeah it should tick that it was the wrong thing to do if she was a normal pony but it doesnt and i love that is is so interesting so see a character act after different morals and other worldviews than just the norm i love how she is weird and objective and tries to take shortcuts and sometimes ignores feelings to reach a goal in the most efficient way

Totally agree with the whole "she is different thing." Everyone expects her to be perfect already or know the lesson already, well that's just it she doesn't know what to do in a situation and reverts back to doing something she is familiar with: magic. It's pretty brilliant imo. Then she unlearns what she thought her whole life! But digging even deeper now to something that seems harmless in and out of itself.

If anything, it showed that Pegasi can do anything they put their minds to, even flood a massive castle top to bottom til all the windows pour out rivers of water. Why is her brainwashing people unrealistic? She's Starlight remember? Or are we just so used to 180 turns that we can't even accept when someone is somewhat realistic in their personality change. She still tries to solve every problem with magic, she still cares little for other ponies' agency as long as the ends justify the means. The only difference is that she's not doing it to entire towns without remorse now.

I like that her character flaw is that she always try to look for shortcuts to solve her problems. Think that's a pretty relatable character flaw in my eyes. I don't think it's about her knowing that mind control is wrong so much so that she doesn't know to not be skipping steps to her problems As someone who has tried in the past to find a shortcut to something I'm stuck on, it definitely never works out.

This episode was basically 'Lesson Zero', but not done nearly as well; what Twilight did with the 'Want It, Need it' spell was the eventual result of sheer desperation, removing her moral barriers. With Starlight, on the other hand, its almost like she had none; Twilight completely regretted ever using that spell, but Starlight was all like 'whatever, I goofed'

Last night I finally finished the Dragonborn DLC for skyrim and as I got the final word of Bend Will after seeing what Miraak did with it, being hinted at that I may end up just like him despite playing a Dovahkiin who is an absolute goody two-shoes where ever possible (seriously, I wouldn't have even given the Theives Guild the time of day if one of the main quests didn't force me to and I destroyed the Dark Brotherhood without thinking twice). I then saw this episode today and it got me thinking that someone with the power to control minds and brainwash but is also, at the same time, unwilling to abuse it could make for an interesting story.

Oo, I have reasons why I like Starlight Glimmer for than Sunset Shimmer, pick me, pick me! Because she's still an evil bitch! Okay, so, looks, Sunset Shimmer was this awful person in the first movie but that person just /disappeared/ by the second, leaving this nice person left to pick up the pieces. Sunset Shimmer had to deal with the external consequences of her actions, which is great if you put a lot of stock in karma and payback, tit-for-tat, as proper justice, which I do not, which is getting into a philosophical tangent. Starlight Glimmer has not had to face many, if any, external consequences for her actions. In the universe she lives in, forgiveness is in surplus supply, see FUCKING Discord. No, Starlight Glimmer has to deal with the internal consequence of who she was, unlike Sunset. There was a villainous cult leader quite willing to screw around with whatever kind of dubiously ethical magic to get her way, and that mare hasn't disappeared. And that's /fascinating/.

"Sunset is still better" What are with these comparisons. They're different characters. I love Sunset. Still love Rainbow Dash more tho. Sounds kind of pointless to say since they literally are not replacing each other. Disagree with the familiar. Yes similar things happened but while Twilight was using magic as a means of stressing out in order to make a friendship problem that she could solve on her own, Starlight thought the task was what the friendship lesson was about and Twilight even says the lesson was to spend time with the pony and learn about them do something they love. Also the end of the lesson of "Lesson Zero" came from her friends and not Twilight herself.
