Good review, I personally liked the movie very much. Also, people are so hung up on Capper being a bipedal cat, when we have had semi-bipedal dogs with the diamond dogs and a bipedal bull (yes I know he is a minotaur but that is basically just a bipedal bull the way he's designed) in the show where we have also seen normal dogs and quadruped cattle. Heck, we've even seen bipedal dragons. The show has clearly established that bipedal or semi-bipedal creatures do exist in Equestria.

Crystal Empire: Shining Armor is up in the Crystal Empire with his and Cadences' newborn daughter Flurryheart, and I doubt that Tempest would want to continue going after Twilight if she learned of Flurryhearts' existence and potentially have her killed in the process of draining her Alicorn Magic for her boss. 2. Yaks: Farther away from Equestria than the Crystal Empire. And while they would be effective in fighting against stronger-built opponents like the Storm Guard and fighting in arctic-environments: they don't seem to possess aircraft or any form of knowledge on Aerial Warfare: something that the Storm King himself has demonstrated with his aerial superiority in using a nomadic fleet of Zeppelins and Dirigibles to invade other nations. 3. Dragons: Despite their strength and capacity to rout the Storm Kings' Army: it might be seen as a sign of weakness on Dragon Lord Embers' part and as justification for an uprising among the Dragons to use as leverage to take control over the Dragons, quite possibly twisting the knife further by *KILLING* the now-petrified Alicorn Princesses and ruling over Equestria themselves. 4. The Griffins: Their nation is in economic shambles with no central governing body or a standing army of their own, unless Equestria is able to gather up enough scratch to purchase enough Griffin Mercenaries of high experience to serve as an effective army. 5. The Changelings: Their Hive is still undergoing reconstruction and have barely any standing armed forces now, not even one strong enough to drive away a lone Malwurf. While their ability of disguise is effective for subterfugue and sabotage: these aren't the Fandom Changelings where they have Changeling Infiltrators that are black-flag specialists that can perform covert operations to undermine an enemy force from within.

and then there's Tirek's first appearance in the original 80's: sitting in the shadows, petting a thing while speaking softly but ominuously, growing more angry as he tells Scorpan how he fucked up. it sets him up as a terrifying monster, and also shows that he's in complete command over his minions.

On the point of Grubber, I didn't care for him either, he could've been removed and nothing would change. However, my train of thought stopped at "Give the Guy a Chance" Station and I remembered a thing. When the Storm King arrived at Canterlot and overheard Tempest, Grubber covered for her almost instantly. Honestly, Grubber is like Lefou from Beauty and the Beast, an overeager cling-on but a good guy. He's loyalty to Tempest redeemed him at least a little bit for me.

Well, on the argument between Twilight and Pinkiepie, it makes sense if you think about it. Twilight's under pressure and doesn't want to be caught, right? Well meanwhile her friends are being loud, flashy, singing and dancing, and not taking the situation seriously. Of course Twilight would be upset.

It's basically goes all the way back to the first episode where Twilight was annoyed by all the partying and ridiculous friend-making because she was concerned about Nightmare Moon, when in reality those friendships are what she needed all along. Being in a new place allowed them to break down Twilight's character, with all of the trust and faith that she's developed, and put her back at square one, doubting her friends and wishing she didn't have them.

I have always disliked pinkie and that scene in the movie pretty much bumped my dislike for her liek in susnets backstage pass. she ain’t taking the situation srsly and is having fun while a friend is literally stressed at trying to save their home. Ik twi has some faults but still cmon pinkie literally not contributing to help and then now blaming her for failing is complete bullshit not quite hypocritical but it’s ridiculous. And teh same can be said for teh rest of teh mane six especially applejack who annoyingly stares at twi as if she is the complete problem even tho she isn’t even teh most rationally one and hasn’t even done any shit. And ofc pinkie cries like every single time jesus if u didn’t want twilight to say mean things to u then why yell at her and try to corner her in the first place. Plus it’s her friends that keep cutting twi off whenever they digress form teh mission. So I feel a lot for twi ofc I get that twi isn’t fully correct to yell but still annoyed at pinkie.

Nicole Batista I bet shiny things are a big distraction to you. All the movie was is a big toy push. They could have done that without a bunch of new characters that we have never seen or at least do some character development for the ones they did introduce. I don't think twilight would ever outright try and steal the orb anyway. It was all to rushed because they wanted to push a ton if new toys. The movie was good but it could have been a blockbuster that the fandom wanted. The Damn fandom was so hard up for it, they would have said the movie was great even if it was a crap fest. Obviously this was made to pump maximum cash from toy sells and not the movie, that's why the movie fell way short.

I didn't mind all the new characters and loved them even if they were just for merchandise, because hey, all I wanted was a fun, heartfelt, and huge adventure. What Twilight hasn't experienced in the show is the DEATH OF ALL HER MENTORS. Yes, we know that they can be returned, but she doesn't. She saw them turn to stone in a far more horrific way than the Elements of Harmony. As far as she knows, she's the sole remaining princess (who's old enough to govern), and pretty much has to save equestrian, and rule it afterward. She fell in the trap of thinking that she's a princess, the fucking universe rests on her shoulders

You have a good point. Twi (at that time) was most likely the only alicorn available in the entire world. She must've been so confused and stressed and worried about all kinds of things. "How am I supposed to fix this? What if I can't fix it? Will I replace Celestia? Will I have to replace all of them? Will I be the only alicorn left? Will I be the last alicorn to exist? Would I have to make new alicorns? How would I even do all that?"

Nice VA work! Did you notice that the Wondebolts were there for the song, vanished during the invasion, and then reappeared in chains? Also, why did anyone think Celestia sent Luna to get the Pearl? Doesn't Twilight have a spell that does the _exact same thing_ ? How does no one think Celestia intended on calling on powerful allies, in which case splitting up to contact Ember, Thorax, Rutherford, and Gilda would have also been smart? What even was the point of the story, except to connect points between the merch?

My one biggest issue with the movie can be summed up with this question: Remove the hippogriffs/mereponies from the story, does the ending change at all? The answer is no. And that there is a major issue. They contribute to the fight, sure, but barely more than a cameo. The movie's plot failes completely to give the hippogriffs and real meaning. This leads to a simple question: Why are they in the movie in the first place? Don't get me wrong. I like them. But barring a major rewrite to the ending, the story would work better with the hippogriffs and mereponies on the cuttingroom floor.

I feel like Tempest was popular for a lot of the same reasons Luna was. Having a darker coat than most ponies makes her stand out from the beginning. So she's a harsh contrast to other ponies and even other villains. Wander Over Yonder did a good job of creating a villain with the same feeling. There were a lot of villains in that show, but they were really goofy, and never posed that much of a threat. Then one was introduced later on. I wont spoil anything, but the thing that made them scary, was the fact that there were no jokes. Someone who was relentless and unstoppable. Who wasn't seen slaking or goofing off. Even after their face was revealed, their threat level never lowered.

The Storm King didn't betray her for no reason. He couldn't give her back her horn. He said he could to gain a powerful minion, but when it was time to fulfill his side of the deal he couldn't keep up the lie any longer. But he didn't had to, with the staff he had the power to just simply start attacking her. Other than that, nice review.

I was really disappointed they didn't bring back Lena Hall for this. We really didn't need another pop-pony and seeing how Coluratura is doing with toning down her stage persona while trying to get back to her roots would have been great.

I don't really care what people say about this film, I enjoyed it a lot tbh. Really good animation and music, and some super nice new characters. Plus it wasn't afraid to get darker by having Twilight threaten her friends and sob intensely over it because she thinks she's doomed her whole Nation. And then she gets sung to by Tempest about how unfair life really is because some friends will ditch you in your most vulnerable moments, which hit hard ngl.

I don't know if the way they portrayed Twilight had anything to do with the fact that they were doing a movie this time, and were looking at the problems fresh for a new audience. At any rate, they probably felt like the stakes needed to be raised. Between that and the absence of old allies, I think that too much was taken out in trying to satisfy so many different groups. And on top of that, the pacing ends up being too fast, so we don't spend enough time in each place.

The "raised in a barn" joke was the best but nobody mentions how FAST jokes and moments, like the princess being stoned in the beginning, GO BY SO FAST!!! The one-tenth of a second moments has you seeing the next thing before you can even laugh or whatever. I know time is money, but are we so screwed in the head we can't let a second pass for a laugh? I went to watch this movie with my sis and dad. When we were going into the theater there was a girl at the bottom of the stairs dressed in a rainbow dash dress with little fake wings. The movie also has some composition issues in the animation department, particularly in the tracking shots, characters tend to kinda just float over the sets at the same speed of the camera regardless of how fast the characters are actually moving. Lip syncing is odd at points, CG is bellow average at times and clashes in a bad way with the rest of the movie’s art direction, and the less I say about the end scene and how tempest jumps in front of the main six and then somehow teleports five feet away to end up in front of the storm king the better.

Honestly, I think this movie should have been the introduction of The Pillars, instead of Shadow Play. This movie should have been about Starswirl The Bearded. We heard so much about him in the show before the season 7 finale, and 1 or 2 less than 30 minute episodes didn’t feel like the best way to properly introduce him. I think Hasbro missed out on a great opportunity. The Pillars could’ve been their equivalent of The Avengers, and had they made that movie deal with Paramount, the previous movie right holders of The Avengers, sooner, it could’ve turned out really well.

In the prequel novel, the Storm King mentions that its transformation abilities would really help buff up his staff. Given he was pretty general about its transforming abilities, it's possible that it could have unpetrified the princesses or something like that.

It was a good movie it didn't reach my expectations but I had a lot of fun watching this. The main problem for me, was including too many characters, the same flaw of certain fighting game...(I am seeing you Mortal Kombat Armageddon). It ruined the character development of some of them. Example 1 of the mane 6’s stupidity: rainbow dash did a rainbow leading tempest right to them and causing the birds ship to blow up and caused them to fall to there death. Now that I think about it, the storm king's character is beyond repair. At first, I thought he could've been fixed with a personality change which is partly true. He was way too childish and his personality made him feel like a spoiled 3 year old rich kid. He had power and was succeeding, but he himself was just not threatening at all. But the villains in the show were villainess and intimidating (except for the recent re-appearance of king sombra). (What's up with the 'kings' being poorly written anyway?) So I asked myself, what makes a villain great? 1. Motivation. What is the villain's goal? How much meaning is in that goal? Do they see themselves as the hero? A good villain requires a meaningful goal. An example would be Chrysalis. She wanted to feed her hive, and follow what she believd was best for her kingdom. This is interesting because her intentions are somewhat good and selfless. Yet she still remains crafty, mature, villainess, and pretty scary. She's an awesome villain. However, stormy over here just wants power. Why? You'll never guess what it is... you and you're low standards won't even be able to cOmpreHeaD what the reasoning behind that beautiful goal of his! Oh wait... It's because he wants power. Yes. And the floor over here seems to be what is made out of floor. His goal is weak, he's a non threatening self absorbed brat, and below that there's nothing else to it. He's like a boring piece of sticky paper. Why sticky? Because sticky is annoying and so is the storm king. He's. just. There. For practically no reason. Ok what else makes a villain good? 2. Perspective (if that's what you call it) Nightmare moon. She felt shunned. Ignored. Unappreciated. All she wanted was love. All she wanted was to be more like her sister. Looked up to. Appreciated. It wasn't fair... Luna didn't have what Celestia had. And she didn't do anything wrong to deserve it. She wanted justice. Looking at her perspective, you start to understand a little of how she feels. She's upset, alone, and wants to be loved. You almost want to cheer her on. Help her even. Then you remember that she's gone evil. But now you know that she's not plain evil.... there's more to her than that. Her actions are understandable, which makes her INTERESTING. And somewhat relatable. And of course, there's Disco. Although he has a playful chaotic attitude, he remains threatening and scary. He can be angry, lash out with his chaos powers, and ruin the life you know whenever he wants. And his voice is both whimsical and calm. Like he has full control. So yeah, the villains in the show are great. Tirek's plan was cunning and sombra was terrifying in his first appearance. Would've been nice if the kept the shadowy demeanor they promised and didn't kill him off in a few seconds. As for Cozy, she's... bleh. As a villain. He personality is waaayyy better than little stormo but the fact that she's a filly ruined it all. Well, at least she was entertaining with Tirek and Chrysalis. I feel like her character could've easily been improved if the gave her a backstory that ties in with her controlling way of thinking.

The show isn't about subverting expectations. Heck, most of the episodes are just basic plot tropes you can call ahead of time just by reading the TV Tropes page about said trope. Instead, it's about often witty writing and more complex characters than usually found in a little kids show. When a villain shows up, they get defeated. Nothing unexpected there. Most of the time, the Big Bad gets beaten by a Deus Ex. Sometimes out of nowhere (Chrysalis loses to WTF LOVE NUKE). What the best of FiM does is take those tropes and old life lessons and do something interesting and/or fun with them, while adding lore, characterization and world-building. That's why episodes like "The Perfect Pear" stand out so much. They are the show trying to rise to a higher level of storytelling and SUCCEEDING. Instead, this movie doesn't even bother to attempt that, depending instead on pop songs, 3 Mc Guffins that are never explained at all, and sudden character flips. There's no time devoted to characterization, and the world-building is sloppy and makes no sense within-world. It has to leave out huge established parts of the show so the plot doesn't just end when Discord snaps his talons. Rather than doing to SMART thing and retelling the story of NMM in a more dramatic and fleshed out manner (how Lauren wanted to do it in the first place), something that would have had fans crawling over each other to flood the theaters... they throw in a lackluster villain who didn't look interesting from the get go, and a character who looked like every terrible fanfic writer's bad unicorn OC, complete with standard stupid scar beneath eye... Not to mention, they tossed in a dapper feline who looked directly inspired from "The Cat Returns"... and yet who talks in a G-rated urban accent which doesn't fit his design or attire in the least. And the pirates... they were just baggage. They didn't need to exist. Neither did the Seaponies. Heck, would've made the Storm King an actual threat if they'd been all but wiped out and the last of them who fled with the Pearl just hoofed it over to Twilight.

My biggest issue with the movie could've been solved by adding 10 seconds of footage. captor: stop singing sia: no captor: I said stop sia: something about keeping my friends in high spirits even if it costs me Twilight: long meaningful stare as she's taken past her which in this case would actually make sense unlike in the movie when this part happened.

Just saw the movie, "Open Up Your Eyes" was excellent (Semi-ironic possibly the squinitest pony singing about opening of one's eyes). SIA - Rainbow was just inspired and an excellent pop song.

I thought it was implied that Discord can't really help in most situations. To a large extent because his magic as well as himself is Chaos based. Normalizing a situation out of control does as much harm to himself as it does to the issue. To bring the Storm Kings army to an end would undo the chaos they created. In effect weakening himself, perhaps to the point of no long existing. He can fix a few things, like the chaos he causes as long as he maintain chaos elsewhere(like in his own little pocket universe) but a whole army, I'm not sure. This is as least the best reasoning I can think of why he does not help most of the time when things go down. If you need someone to battle Harmony, Discord is your dude. ^_^

Why do so many people think Twilight was forced? Her friends trusting strangers almost got them caught, Pinkie treating everythig like a game and almost killed herself, Rainbow Dash almost got them caught. So it made total sense she lost her trust and her temper, especially with Pinkie. Not forced at all.

Yeah, but that's only if you actually take the character development we've gotten from the show into account. You can't expect a bland, mediocre movie to do something as base-line competent as that. They've got to spend all their money on an edge-lord antagonist and an annoying bumbling right-hand dwarf who won't ever stop talking. And isn't funny how incompetent he is? How to fix the movie: - Ditch the Storm King entirely - Have Tempest as the main villain, and part of her back story is her retrieving the Staff of Suck-On-It - Have her enslave the "Storm Beasts" to show that she is powerful even before having her horn back or the staff at full power - 3 Princesses are NOT encased in stone. - More storm ships are seen heading in different directions, and each princess takes a role in warning other cities in Equestria. Cadence flies to the Crystal Empire to warn Shining Armor and aide in protecting it, Celestia stays in Canterlot to protect it, Luna is sent to another major city (Manehatten or Cloudsdales) while troops are evenly distributed. So everyone is serving a purpose which explains why we won't see them again but gives them a purpose. - Maybe have Starlight seen taking the "Next train to Ponyville" with Trixie and the Crusaders, implying they'll go protect the village. - Get rid of Grubber - Have Applejack argue with Queen Novo about cowardice and hiding and have her escorted off her sea-horse jail like originally planned - Have Fluttershy bond with the strange caged creatures in that weird desert Kloogle town and have those creatures break free and assist in Flutter and other Mane 5 in their escape from Tempest. - The Staff, even at full power, does NOT recreate Tempest's horn and in her rage creates a storms hence the final battle is out of every ponies hands and they all much work together to mend Tempest's broken heart and calm the storm.

It's as of the Storm King is some kind of mix of Hades, Aku and Discord. Or maybe Aku shipped Hades with Tirek and their child was brought up by Discord... As for the confusion with Regular cats and Anthro cats in the same universe, where was your confusion regarding the Diamond Dogs being Anthro dogs while Winona is a Regular dog in the same universe, or even back in Disney where there are Anthro birds and Regular birds side by side?

Lauren really wanted Celestia to be a queen, so she wasn’t really against that. Also, Tempest’s backstory is basically Starlight’s backstory, literally. A reason why Tempest and Starlight’s backstories aren’t really good.

Kimmy Art to be fair i think tempests story is better as its not just abandonment from her friends but beging left alome with a disability. She lost her horn which didnt allow her to use magic like normal ponies. Something that could have left to bullying before she decied to run away. All that happen to starlight was that her friend left. Which is normal. People move on.

9:30 There's no communication between the show/movie and the comics, so all characters are different in both incarnations. Plus Tempest is the threatening villain of the movie, so it wouldn't make much sense to have another one.

And now they've made the movie canon to the show... and the lack of Discord is now LEGIT!! If the movie just stood on its own, the excuse people fell back on "Oh, well, it's an alternative universe!" which WOULD have held water, is now BONE DRY!! And we also have to ask where the griffons, dragons, changelings (WHO ARE ALSO THEIR ALLIES NOW AND WOULD BE REALLY DAMNED USEFUL!!) are during all this! Instead, they have to go find seaponies (Screw it, they're just re-worked seaponies), who they have never met before! And they have no idea HOW these Hungry Hungry Hippos are going to help them, BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW THEM!! It was just a mess. The plot was over-complicated and threw in so many characters so new audience members would ever have any idea who any of them are. And if you did know the show, Twilight wasn't herself either.

I could not care less the movie uses similar plot points because of how it uses them. The princesses were taken out of the picture early but there’s more too it than that. The movie went through great lengths to show how powerful the Storm King’s forces are. They are needed for their magic and still have a role in the story. Also the princesses have been captured before but not like this. The way they slowly become jagged crystal statues and how it’s animated is disturbing. And the thing about the Twilight scene is she hasn’t faced anything like this. All the examples you gave were in Equestria where Twilight either used the elements of harmony or powerful talks to befriend villains. From her point of view, she has none of that here. She is in a completely foreign location trying to save her home from being enslaved and her usual tactics won’t work. And she has every right to think that since the very first thing they did was be friendly and it blew up in their faces. She is being pushed to her limits and her friends aren’t helping. They don’t see the severity of the situation and continue as they would if they were in Equestria (something Twilight makes clear) but they still don’t listen to her and only get themselves in more trouble. It’s not forced, it’s her desperation and anxiety getting the better of her and causing her to lash out at those she cares about.

Congrats, Storm King! You are officially the first villain in the My Little Pony franchise to die! Also the reason why Pinkie and the others abandon Twilight isn't due to the outburst she had. They abandoned her because she said "Maybe I'd better off without friends like you!". Never in the series no matter how angry she was with her friends did she believe she was better off without them. I feel like that point would have stuck better if when they were walking away from Twilight, Applejack said something like "Well then...you're wish is our command! Ah' would say "It's been a pleasure knowin' ya'." but then ah' wouldn't be bein' very honest... So long, Twi." Also also I would have loved a post-credits scene where Discord walks onscreen and reenacts the ending of Farris Bueller's Day Off complete with the striped robe, shooing the audience away saying "What's everypony still doing here? The movie's over. Go on now. Go home. Leave."
