as an autistic person, i wasn't the biggest fan of love of the spectrum. i felt like it was a little infantalising (i'd never heard people being described as sweet and other similar adjectives so often), especially with how involved the parents were, even though everyone was over 18 years old. i also found it really weird how people were mostly set up with people who were also autistic, yet they were being coached into this very neurotypical dating etiquette. if both people on the date are neurodivergent, why the pressure to follow these rules? it felt like these dates weren't serving the people themselves, but rather the audience, in the same way we watch uncomfortable dates on first dates

@@morehannah I wondered this too, but then thought, as a wheelchair user dating on a tv show, would I feel comfortable being set up with able bodied people... and the answer is definitely not. Personally. I feel like it would have been possibly unethical and irresponsible of the tv company to do that. But I am having a hard time articulating why! xD Possibly because it sort of feels like pandering to the abled audience? And if it went badly, painting disabled people as the victim unnecesarily? There may be some internalised ableism in my thinking there, need to ponder on that further. I can't really articulate why that would make me feel so uncomfortable.

Someone has already mentioned Star Trek, and that is a GREAT suggestion. There's so much there to see, but the first two series in particular are excellent for general subjects [that is, Star Trek (1966) and Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) ]. Later series have more specific subjects, like Deep Space Nine concentrating on War, and Voyager concentrating on Community and later human self discovery with Seven's stories. I also recommend Quantum Leap (1989), a show about time travel that concentrates on social issues in post-WW2 western society, and is easily one of the very best sci-fi shows ever made.

I don't have autism but my sister does and I've worked with people on the spectrum in a professional capacity for years. I really loved Love on the Spectrum because even though it's not perfect, it did portray people with autism as adults who want to connect with others, emotionally and/or sexually, and I feel like we don't have enough of that. I also loved the couples who were already together and think their inclusion was so important. Like any documentary that portrays a marginalized community, there is so much diversity and it can't all be portrayed in five-ish hours of television. I hope they continue on with the show, incorporating feedback from the community and portraying a wider diversity of the spectrum, but I think it's off to a really really good start.

I'm so enjoying seeing you getting into sci fi! I think you'd really enjoy Hitchhiker's Guide (trust me, the film in no way does it any sort of justice) for a good space romp, and Ender's Game for a dark exploration of some parts of human nature. It's one of those things where they are popular/classics because they are really enjoyable books as well as great literature. I also love historical fiction for the same reason you're learning to love sci fi - being able to explore human nature and important topics in creative ways outside of our normal world. Pillars of the Earth and Philippa Gregory are my favourites of this genre at the moment :) I'm gonna give that new reading app a try - I hope you get out of your reading slump soon! Yo, if you are getting into sci-fi you should give 'the left hand of darkness' a try. It's a scifi book from the 60's by a female author called Ursula le Guin, she creates this really interesting planet with aliens who don't have a sex to explore what society might be like without gender inequality. It's a fascinating window into what were contemporary ideas about gender in the 60's :)

Given your want for politics and identity exploration in stories plus sci-fi, I highly recommend The Expanse book and TV series. The books came first and while the TV series does follow the major plot points, the way they've adapted the series for TV honestly makes it the better medium in my opinion. If you want to read along (or listen to the audiobooks, which is how I've been reading them) while you watch, Book 1 is covered in Season 1 and the first half of Season 2, Book 2 is covered in the second half of Season 2 and first half of Season 3, Book 3 is the second half of Season 3, and Book 4 (and a few early elements of Book 5) is covered in Season 4. Season 5 is in post-production right now and the 9th Book is due to be released next year.

In regards to "Love on the spectrum", as someone on the spectrum myself I found the series incredibly cringy and sometimes unbareable to watch but that might just be the nature of my diagnosis. I will say though that I think the show did a poor job at displaying what dating is like for people on the spectrum. It is a spectrum condition and therefore a lot of us "Aspies" will not have any issue with dating, some might have no social issues but environment ones. It would appear that the producers of the show whilst having good intent purposefully picked candidates on the spectrum that have social issues which of course does reflect a lot of Autistic people but also equally is not the case for everyone on the spectrum.
@emmynoether95404 жыл бұрын
I never heard about autism without social problems. Could you elaborate on that? What do you mean by environment issues? I have issues with noise and bright blinking lights - things like that?
@AStarzIsHere4 жыл бұрын
@@emmynoether9540 When I am referring to "environmental issues" I am summarising how an Autistic person can suffer from sensory overload in specific environments due to things like bright lights, sounds, the temperature, the list is endless. I know quite a few Autistic adults (myself included) who have no "social problems" and what I mean by that is that some Autistic people don't have any noticeable social impairment like portrayed on the aforementioned show. If I am talking from personal experience, I can become overwhelmed by something somebody says to me for no reason but this does not impact my ability to continue my day or continue a conversation with them. I just meltdown in private later. It was a poor choice of wording on my part to suggest some people with Autism have no or 0% social impairment because I think we all do to some degree (whether that be miniscule or vast). I was just trying to show how the show really underrepresented the Autism community and really one noted Autistic people socially. I hope this clears up my use of words, my intention with my comment and expands on my own experience as an Autistic person.
@username42614 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree! My nephew is also on the spectrum and his sensory issues have more of an impact on his life than social issues- he also has adhd so socialising isn’t always a problem( often is ofc)

I'm so glad you loved The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet! I'm a huge fan of that entire Wayfarer series, though it's more a set of stand-alone novels with overlapping characters than a series. If you read the next two books in the series (#2 is A Closed and Common Orbit and #3 is Record of a Spaceborn Few) I'd love to hear what you think! Have you read the Lady Astronaut Novels by Mary Robinette Kowal? They're more alternate history than sci fi, but I adore them just as much as the Wayfarer series.
