I've always had a passing appreciation for the team ever since I was a child. The movies were my main source of exposure to the franchise for most of my life, First Class in particular being a movie that my family and I collectively enjoyed a lot and have seen multiple times. It wouldn't be until recently though until my passing interest with it propel into my now current hyperfixation. Growing up, I was essentially closeted of two things, one that I was something I was aware of and the other I wouldn't find out about until recently. The first thing was that I was gay, which wouldn't be something I could come to terms with until I was sixteen years old. Ever since then, I began exploring a ton of media that delved into topics of otherhood and the prejudice that came with it. X-Men, unsurprisingly, was one of them. The mutanthood of the characters was always something I found awe in, like anyone would with any other superhuman in media. But it wouldn't be until that shift in my life that it began to speak to me on a much deeper level. Scenes in X2, and the book that heavily influenced it especially, God Loves, Man Kills in particular struck a cord in me as someone who grew up in a religious household and community. But even beyond the broader theme of the franchise, or perhaps even hand in hand with it, was my newfound connection and love for the individual characters. Scott Summers and Jean Grey across different sources of X-media were two that especially piqued my interest. Cyclops' obsessive and resilient nature, and Marvel Girl's struggles with sensory issues with a sense of care for her loved ones that surpasses it resonated with me on a personal level. When I eventually found out that I have both ADHD and Autism, it only made even more sense why. What the X-Men as a franchise has given to me as its audience was a fantasy. Not a fantasy for me to escape to; hide from my problems. Rather, it was a fantasy that gave me the power to face them. It presented me a world that judged its heroes as my world has to me, and how I can resist it. However, it is not through their superhuman capabilities that they utilize to defeat their adversaries that I have taken away from their stories, but instead the choice they repeatedly make to keep moving forward, to prove their critics wrong, and to continue loving amidst all the hate. Although it sure doesn't hurt that they look fucking rad while doing it :)
